Doubles

Summary

Doubles is one of the most common and most annoying ways to start a thread. To get doubles, one must have the ones and tens digit be the same value. Those with basic mathematical knowledge are aware this happens once in every ten posts, and thus is not a particularly rare occurrence.

Doubles can be used in many ways. One could make a thread and say "doubles says what I name my pet", "doubles decides what I do with this pickle", or something related. Alternatively, the op could say "dubz and the Mets win the championship". If he gets doubles, then fate obviously agrees with whatever unlikely thing he claims. This is obviously horribly obnoxious. Sometimes, the OP will just post the above picture and say "check em". This last option is perhaps the most likely to annoy whatever board you're on (usually /b/).

Doubles is very related to post ending in X. As a response to both occurrences, moot changed all post numbers' final three digits to end in XXX on /b/. Some rebelled by pointing out that using the mouse to hover still showed the post number, but this was generally successful in limiting doubles threads. As of early 2011, the full post numbers are back, and so are the doubles threads.

Doubles can be improved via trips, quads, quints, etc. As each level is 10x more rare, higher levels are considered "better". A trip can always overwrite a dub, etc.

Origins

The picture often posted to begin doubles threads is one of Christian Bale playing Patrick Bateman in the movie American Psycho. In the scene, Bateman has his inebriated rival over at his house. Patrick tells the man about his music tastes, specifically Huey Lewis and the News. After the pseudointellectual rant, Bateman violently kills the man. The image of Bateman pointing comes from a quick sequence where he points at his fancy stereo.

Current status

Doubles threads are still all over /b/, and make cameos on other boards and chans. They are universally considered to be annoying and stupid. Doubles can be posted several ways: one can "roll", i.e. just have a 1/10 chance of randomly getting doubles. One can refresh until the previous post appears, e.g. wait for 104050154, then instantly post yourself bragging about your dubz. This is less likely to work on fast moving boards. The next way to do it is to utilize a script that basically does the previous method, but without human error. Lastly, mods can do whatever they want and post dubz freely.
