Could Joel Edgerton Star in ‘The Bourne Legacy’ or ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’?

4 hours ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Joel Edgerton has been around for years, but he's only now beginning to get serious attention. He played Owen Lars in the Star Wars prequels, Gawain in King Arthur, and had moments in Ned Kelley, Kinky Boots and Smokin' Aces. More recently he's been great in his brother's film The Square and in Animal Kingdom. He's one of the leads of Warrior (trailer here [1]) and also of The Thing, which acts as prequel to John Carpenter's sci-fi horror standard. Universal must like his work in The Thing, because now he's linked to two other huge films the studio is preparing to put into production: Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy, and the Rupert Sanders-directed Snow White and the Huntsman. But Vulture [2]'s piece that reports his possible involvement in those films has an inherent contradiction, or seems to. The report says that Universal is concerned that Joel Edgarton »

Sebastian Junger's Tribute to Tim Hetherington, Video Diary

3 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

As much as I admired Tim Hetherington, the photojournalist who bled to death Wednesday in Misrata, Libya, struck by a mortar, I also respect his confrere and comrade, Restrepo co-director Sebastian Junger, who is a fine writer. Check out this Vanity Fair tribute piece (below) he wrote to Hetherington. It made me cry, yet again. In case you missed it, Hetherington's 2010 short Diary is below. It has an Apocalypse Now feel to it. Which makes sense. This Vanity Fair chunk is out of context, you'll want to read the whole thing:i’m in the truck with you. I’m imagining those last minutes. You’re on your back watching the tops of the buildings jolt by and the blue Mediterranean sky beyond them. I almost drowned once, »

Few rises in recent years have been as meteoric as that of Brit Marling. At the beginning of 2011, she was all but unknown, but by the end of January, she'd emerged as one of the most exciting new talents in independent film, having starred in, co-written and co-produced a pair of sci-fi tinged dramas that also happened to be two of the most widely acclaimed films at Sundance this year, "Another Earth" and "Sound of My Voice." The former, directed by Mike Cahill, about a guilt-ridden drunk driver (Marling) who begins a relationship with the grieving husband and father… »

For a moment there, the world seemed be his oyster for Zach Braff. The "Scrubs" star wrote and directed the mega indie hit "Garden State" which not only did gangbusters at the box office, but also spawned a best-selling soundtrack that suddenly had music supervisors everywhere looking at independent labels to find the music for their films. And then...Braff seemed to fade into the background a bit. He returned to his hit show and outside of "The Last Kiss" didn't do too much film work and found his… »

Kate Becksinsale offered Total Recall's female lead

15 hours ago | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Kate Beckinsale has been offered the role of Lori in Sony Pictures' Total Recall remake, according to Deadline. This news shouldn't come as a huge shock, as Beckinsale is married to remake director Len Wiseman, and they've previously worked together on several Underworld movies. Only scheduling problems could keep her away from Recall, as she's currently busy shooting Underworld 4: New Dawn (and it'd probably lead to some awkward dinner table moments if she just turned her hubbie down…) If she signs on, she'll star opposite Colin...

Jeremy Renner Up For The Bourne Legacy

13 minutes ago | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Despite some chatter mid-Thursday that Joel Edgerton was Tony Gilroy’s man for the Bourne Legacy’s central role, it would seem that the director and studio backers Universal have settled on Jeremy Renner. While Deadline brings word of the studio formally offering the role to Renner, the real credit must be given to the fine fellows of Latino Review, who got wind of the casting choice at the start of the month, and spent the day trying to convince everyone that it wasn’t some big April Fool’s prank.Well, no one is laughing now, except possibly Renner’s accountant as he’ll likely score a healthy payday if signs the deal, which is now looking close to certain provided the scheduling can be worked out. His name was among the scores of actors considered as Gilroy tried to narrow down who would play the main man in the Bourne spin-off, »

Jeremy Renner Set to Topline The Bourne Legacy

38 minutes ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Well, it looks like the search is finally over. Universal Pictures has officially offered Jeremy Renner the lead role in Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy. Deadline confirms what Latino Review reported earlier this month: that Renner will be taking over the franchise that kicked Matt Damon’s career into high-gear. Written and directed by Gilrory, the film will apparently take place in the same universe as Paul Greengrass and Doug Liman’s previous films, but won’t feature Damon’s Jason Bourne character (a fact that doesn’t seem to hinder Universal from strapping the Bourne name on the film). Legacy will further explore the Treadstone and Blackbriar mythos that permeated throughout the previous films, possibly exploring other similar agents and groups. Universal cast a very wide net in searching for their Legacy star, with basically every fairly well-known male actor between the ages of 18-40 meeting for the role (names included Jake Gyllenhaal, »

Jeremy Renner Recruited for 'The Bourne Legacy'

51 minutes ago | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The search is over... and now the chase begins!

Universal is ready to commence with the fourth installment of the "Bourne" franchise now that -- at long last -- Matt Damon's successor has been chosen. And it is Jeremy Renner who will soon be on the run with "The Bourne Legacy," according to Deadline.

Almost every young (or at least young-ish) actor in Hollywood has been rumored to be in the running (pun intended, you betcha) to star in the new "Bourne" adventure, and Universal has certainly taken its time in making its decision. Renner was one of the many actors that had been mentioned to be up for the role before, and now the Oscar-nominated star of "The Hurt Locker" and "The Town" has officially received his orders.

"The Bourne Legacy," which will be directed by Tony Gilroy, will feature Renner as an operative from other covert government organization, »

Reports: Jeremy Renner Offered The Lead In 'The Bourne Legacy,' Though Scheduling Could Be An Issue

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So much for Vulture's report on Joel Edgerton, published earlier today huh? Does Jeremy Renner have the lead role in Tony Gilroy's "The Bourne Legacy" all sown up? All signs point to yes. Last week it was rumored that Universal wanted the breakout "Hurt Locker" star for the lead, despite all the testing they had been doing of up-and-coming actors, and that much has been confirmed. There seems to be two reports that are saying much of the same, but not quite. Deadline basically says Renner has the role and while THR essentially agrees, their report appears to be more… »

Jeremy Renner Cast as the Lead in 'The Bourne Legacy'

1 hour ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Well, it didn't take long after I posted that article about Joel Edgerton as writer/director Tony Gilroy's new favorite to lead The Bourne Legacy for it to become old news as Deadline reports Jeremy Renner has officially signed on.

Renner is not replacing Matt Damon who starred as the titular character in the first three films in the franchise, instead he'll be playing a character named Martin, an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Bourne.

This marks Renner's third major franchise role since being nominated for an Oscar for The Hurt Locker as he is starring oppositeTom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol later this year and it is anticipated he may be taking over for the franchise afterward. He is also playing the character of Hawkeye in Marvel's The Avengers feature in 2012, a character »

The Trailer for Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald's 'Life in a Day'

1 hour ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I really don't think there is much I can add to this post other than to say the following is the trailer for Life in a Day. The synopsis, which I added just below the trailer says the rest, but I would love to hear your thoughts on this. I was particularly impressed and think this could end up being an amazing feature.

What happens when you send a request out to the world to chronicle, via video, a single day on Earth? You get 80,000 submissions and 4,500 hours of footage from 192 countries. Producer Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald took this raw material -- all shot on July 24, 2010 -- and created Life in a Day, a groundbreaking, feature-length documentary that portrays this kaleidoscope of images we call life. National Geographic is bringing it to theaters starting July 24, 2011. Prepare to be amazed. »
