Get an egg up on lunch

Breakfast for lunch? Why not. We eat breakfast foods at dinner, everything from omelets to cereal. Breakfast for lunch is just as logical. But because the whole sit-down option at a coffee shop may be too much for the time crunched, fast-food eateries serving breakfast items beyond the usual 10:30 or 11 a.m. cut off fill the bill.
Now, some Burger King locations may serve breakfast fare beyond the a.m. hours and McDonald's has a few breakfast-type items available throughout the day. But quick-serve restaurants haven't exactly jumped on the breakfast-at-lunch bandwagon despite what seems like an ardent push by online commenters. Too bad. Lunch Box likes breakfast-style egg dishes as an alternative to the deli sandwich/salad bar/burger choices. So I sampled a trio of egg dishes offered all day at three area restaurants, opting for egg-white items for calorie and cholesterol savings. Remember: A whole egg has about 70 calories, 185 mg cholesterol and 6.3 grams protein. The egg white alone has only about 16 calories, 0 mg cholesterol and 3.6 grams protein. Note that these places have some breakfast-type items all day, but they may not have all their breakfast items all day. --Judy Hevrdejs, Tribune Newspapers jhevrdejs@tribune.com Twitter: @judytrib |
