Johanan ben Baroka (or Johanan b. Baroka; Hebrew: רבי יוחנן בן בְּרוֹקַה, or sometimes spelled יוחנן בן ברוקא, both read as Yochanan ben [son of] Beroka) was a second and third generation Jewish Tanna sage (2nd century). The Mishnah handed down, in his name, many of his Halakhic rulings,[1] and additional halakhot rulings of Baroka are cited in the Baraitas.
His article in Pirkei Avot dealt with the issue of Chillul Hashem (Desecration [of] the [God's] Name):
"Rabbi Yochanan the son of Berokah would say: Whoever desecrates the Divine Name covertly, is punished in public. Regarding the desecration of the Name, one does it maliciously and one erring.".—Pirkei Avot 4:5
He had a son, R. Ishmael ben Johanan ben Baroka, who was accounted in the fourth generation of the Jewish Tanna sages.
