Hail, lightning and flash floods cause weather chaos

From lightning striking the Tyne Bridge, to flash flooding in Alnwick and giant hail in Hinckley, Britons capture the severe weather that struck the UK on Thursday.

The footage captures the intensity of the fierce storms and torrential downpours that caused flash floods and major travel disruption across parts of the UK yesterday.

One man died after being swept away in a Shropshire stream, and train services between Scotland and England had to be halted as freak deluges saw rail lines blocked.

Northern England, the Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland were worst hit by battering storms that brought lightning, giant hail stones and and reports of damage from squalls and tornadoes.

During a huge thunderstorm in Newcastle, lightning was filmed striking the Tyne Bridge whilst slightly further north in Alnwick the danger of flash flooding was witnessed when one man was almost swept away as he attempted to cross the road.

The floods are the latest to hit parts of the UK, as this month shapes up to be one of the wettest Junes on record - possibly surpassing June 2007 when heavy rain caused widespread flooding.

More than a thousand homes and businesses were flooded last weekend after torrential downpours across the north, with a month's rain falling in 24 hours in some places.

Earlier in the month, flash floods brought havoc to communities in west Wales following heavy rainfall.
