Hello,

I am in need of a website where I can get a picture that meets wikipedias copyright standards for the comedian, Tom Cotter.

You could ask Tom or his agents to donate a photo with the correct licencing for Wikipedia to use it. There's a link on his web site. RudolfRed (talk) 01:18, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

  • http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS has the how to. It can get wierd though. First you need a file name after you upload the image that the BLP wants. Then the copyright holder sends an email with the file name. Commons may be best if they want the image used for other language wikipedias. The BLP maintains personality rights so it is hard for anyone to sell stuff and use his image. The copyright holder has to allow other uses but can legally require 'attribution' to himself as the original creator.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:14, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

It looks very much to me like two photographs of the same person, but taken 20 years apart. In any event, the photograph you point at as the correct one has very good provenance, being from the collection of the Library of Congress, and is a much cleaner photograph than the one in the article, so I have replaced it. By the way, normally a request like yours should be made at the Spanish Wikipedia (their help desk is here). This help desk is generally for English Wikipedia issues. Good catch, my mistake editing while tired . When I navigated to the photo link it is to the local display on the Spanish Wikipedia of the image in Commons I saw only the what links here link, which was to the Spanish Wikipedia article (which I fixed). After paying three regular ins. premiums, two different policy holders finds that both of them are declared illegal policy holders on the strength of their signatures as their original signatures are not available anywhere in the records of the insurance co & the proposal of both the policy holders were signed by some one unknown person. In other words, two different policy proposals are signed by one person other then the actual policy holders. Can you pl advise what are the legal rights of both the actual policy holders. Can they demand insurance co. to declare both the policies as NULL & VOID and claim the full amount of premiums they have paid ? [edit] Citing a researcher by name?

When reporting a statement of fact based on cited research, is it preferred or not to qualify the statement with the researcher's name/affiliation? For example, does Wikipedia prefer statements such as "The research of Dr Smith at Foobar St University shows that giraffes are on average 18 feet tall" vs simply "giraffes are on average 18 feet tall"? (With each statement followed by <ref>reference details</ref>, of course.) 71.185.49.67 (talk) 11:36, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

In a stub article, citing the researcher by name might unbalance the article, and I would only recommend doing so if it were a new discovery (5th moon of Pluto), or doing so allowed hyperlink to the researcher's article, otherwise the info and hyperlinked university should suffice. In a medium article I'd follow the format of the rest of the article, and in a lengthy article I'd only include the new discovery information, unless a split seemed imminent. If Dr. Smith has an article on WP and is widely acknowlged to be one of the world's top giraffe experts it is probably ok to mention and wikilink him specifically. Otherwise just a plain statement will do. Roger (talk) 13:30, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Non-free manga cover

In an article about a manga series, I want to replace the current non-free image in the infobox with another non-free image I think is more appropriate. Should I be bold and make this change or should I discuss this first? You can see in old page version that in the recent weeks I have changed 6 articles to top-importance. All of the articles appear at Category:Top-importance Chicago articles. This page version from before I added the six articles there were 52 top importance articles. There are currently only 54 top-importance articles according to Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Chicago articles by quality statistics. It looks like someone just updated the assessment list today. The bot that updates it runs slowly, but it can be forced to run at any time by following the links located here and selecting "Chicago" (in this case) from the drop-down menu. I proposed a split to an article two and a half months ago, and nobody has made any sort of comment on it. Is there an easy way to draw people to discuss about it (beyond the tag that's already on the article itself)? - Purplewowies (talk) 18:22, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

What is the article in question? If there is a WikiProject into the scope of which the article might fall, perhaps try to ask there. You could also start an RfC about it. I found we have Wikipedia:Proposed mergers and Wikipedia:Proposed splits redirects there. Given that the topic of the article (and of the proposed new articles after the split) are very specialized, I don't expect much people would have an opinion on the split. My advice would be, go to the page history of the article and look for people who contributed a lot to the article and drop them a message on their talk page asking for input on the split. User:SandyGeorgia seems to be a main contributor from what I could see from a quick look at the history. [edit] Move articles to talk page.

Recently I had to prune an extremely large article. It was so large that making any edit at all was locking my browser. In order to make the edits, I split the article into sub article and edited those. Having used the sub articles to re-create the original (now pruned), I would like to retain the split articles for reference (so that other editors can re-instate material if they think I went to far for example). Since the articles were created by me and have not been signaficantly edited I would be within my rights to sppedily delete them. Would I be within my rights to move them to sub talk pages of the main article (with hind sight, this is what I should have done in the first place). One of the articles is under a deletion discussion and it looks like concensus is going to be to delete. Op47 (talk) 18:44, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

I was just reading your article on chiropractic which seemed to be pretty well-informed. I was a little thrown, though, by the last sentence in the Intro (or first) section: "A systematic review found that the risk of death from manipulations to the neck outweighs the benefits.[35]"

I have been to a chiropractor several times over the years and always had amazing results, as have my friends/family that referred me. I found this sentence a little scary (like if I was reading this article for the first time prior to seeking chiropractic treatment, I might think twice) so read the article cited to justify this sentence: Deaths after Chiropractic: A review of published cases. The article actually states that there have been a total of 26 reported cases of death from chiropractic since 1934 (that's 26 deaths in 78 years of published data). Also, there were only 10 cases where the death occurred within one day of the treatment--the article states that the rest of the fatalities occurred up to 58 days following the treatment (not sure how linked the two can be with this amount of time--almost 2 months--passing between treatment and death).

I'm writing to Wiki to see if this sentence can't be deleted from the posted article...it seems really misleading to me and I know a lot of people read Wiki to get basic info on a subject and I would hate anyone else to be thrown by such a misleading sentence when the rest of the article seemed so well informed/impartial.

Does the Freedom of Speech extends to teachers and professors if they feel compelled for professional ethics or in the interest of the public to make public disclosures to parents or students that the school or University in some areas or departments is not acting in the best interest of students. Is this Freedom Of Speech restricted in these settings? That's skating fairly close to legal advice. If you are looking for cases, there are a number of good legal websites, findlaw.com, for example. There are also any numbers of books on the First Amendment at your local law library.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:36, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

I am an American living in Germany and I am using the English translation for the the Wikipedia web site. I am specifically looking for chart information for several American music albums. However, the Wiki page for the albums have only the German and Swiss music chart information (i.e. this album hit # 26 on the German music chart). I'm sure this is because the information is coming through a German ISP. There's nothing wrong with German music charts - just not the information I'm looking for right now. There is no such thing as a US Wikipedia, this is the English Wikipedia. Wikipedia is divided by language, not country. You can try searching for the artist/band in the search box at the top right of the page, but without the name of the artist/band we can't give you any more advice. [edit] How or where can i display a proposed change to a protected page.

I'm very new to Wiki Editing (a few days), i wish to propose a change to a semi-protected article's table layout. I copied the 'View Source' and compiled the table in a new format in My Sandbox. However, it doesn't look like other users can view test pages in another's sandbox.

Is there anywhere on Wiki that one can display a proposed change to an article so people can see how it looks? I think it's a great change and needs to be viewed by others who can then make their comments and opinions known.

Everybody can see all pages including your sandbox. And yes, Wikipedia:Sandbox is often overwritten. If you link there then it should be to a specific version in the page history. I guess you mean Pedro Nel Gil. If you refer to Category:Colombian cyclists then it's not a list. It's a category and it can only show Wikipedia articles. There is no article about Pedro Nel Gil. Is there a way to display the length/duration of a YouTube video? I would like this to be displayed next to the link to the video so users have an idea how long the video is. It seems that this information is obtainable via the YouTube API but I think that would require some JavaScript or PHP to use and I don't know how that would work on Wikipedia. [edit] The New Search Bar

Hello. I used to come to wikipedia all the time, but, alas, I fear today is the beginning of the end. When I viewed a page, suddenly, there appeared at the bottom of my page, this big ugly blue search bar for related terms. It says "related terms" as a link to automatically search those at random I supposed, then beside that "online advertising" because I just might want to click that! Then, a typical white search box. It is at the bottom of the wiki page and interferes with my line of vision, rather like having subtitles or closed captioning on when you would rather watch the movie. This bar also has to load with every page, creating a slight lag, sort of like a hiccup, where everything stops for a moment as you are trying to scroll down the page. Then, it suddenly moves but more than likely will instead present the popup message that a script working would you like to stop the script or proceed. This happens on every page and must be related to this new search box. I resent this intrusion in my wiki experience here and feel it is a cheesy and unnecessary addition to your site. Whoever decided to add it should discuss it with a board group or something and have it removed very quickly. I won't return until it is gone, the reading has become too cumbersome now and, after all, there really are a lot of different sites to go to, I had simply become accustomed to coming here. Thank you.

I would have used a stronger word than "cheesy" for the thing you are seeing. And I agree with Canoe1967, it has nothing to do with the the Wikipedia site, some advertising malware has subverted your browser. No, I think it is Wikipedia itself. To experience this, you must be fortunate enough to have a slow network. I have got this many times. Yeah, everything like borders is colored in blue. The search box is under the bottom of the page. The talkpages etc. are also given there. Every thing is given in sections. I mean, there are separate sections for page-related ones, user-related ones etc. But I do not know about the ad. I suspect that Powered by MediaWiki and A Wikimedia Project is referred by it. I wonder if it is another skin, but I have got no opportunity to compare it. (I always liked it as it doesn't have the waste area to the left of vector skin). Yuppie! I tried it now by disconnecting and reconnecting the network and was successful. Unfortunately, I have no software nor camera to do this. These are the properties. (The page was Polyvinyl chloride)

  • The chembox is on the left
  • Wikitables are on the left, without background color or border. No border but background only for yellow backgrounded vector terms.
  • Image is on left. All pictures have a blue border and are not like normal thumbnails (but the button for enlargement is given on right and text given below the image freely without a background color)
  • Links are underline and in blue (dark blue, not like vector skin), even the superscripts for ref are underlined.
  • TOC without border and background. In it, the sections have a solid round bullet, subsection a round hollow, and sub-subsection - a solid square.
  • [edit] is placed at left of each section just before the name. The size of it is larger for a high rank section. A sub section has a smaller sized [edit] item compared to its main section. It is in turn bigger than that of its own subsection.
  • Navbox Health issues of plastics and Polyhalogenated compounds (PHCs) is shown like a cladogram. But Plastics is shown as normal. Hi hi, the V·E·T is shown above the table (about the middle) and is given in separate lies. V above E above T. It looks weird.
  • After such sections and before categories, the following is written

It sounds like you just need to clear your entire cache to get the normal page design working again. It was your mention of "online advertising" which made us think your computer was infected but now I guess you weren't referring to actual advertisements. I used to use the watchlist customization feature that renders pages I haven't visited since the last change in italics. All of a sudden, it changed to displaying unvisited changes to bold display. What happened? I think the behavior of the watchlist display is controlled by the code at User:Toshio Yamaguchi/vector.css, but I didn't change anything there. Is there a way to change the title of a yearly event that is listed on Wikipedia? I believe there's a template where you enter the birth and death dates and it automatically calculates the age at death; and the standard is that the template and the information is included in the infobox rather than the text itself. Hello, its me again. I have just found out that on clicking Special:WhatLinksHere/Wikipedia:Help_desk, we are going to a new article project page, which is a sub article of the real page. But in the url it is in Special namespace. However it looks outside as if it was in an article project namespace. The cool thing is that it has got a talkpage and it goes to the talk page of main one. The same phenomenon occurs for talk page too! Is this only for me? Shall we report it? Sorry that I was in a rush. I incorrectly named it as article page. If you click on the link on What links here from toolbox and go to that page you can see that the tab Project page is ON. (above the term Pages that link to "Wikipedia:Help desk") (If you were on your user page the tab User page would be present instead.) It virtually appears to be a sub page of the page Wikipedia:Help desk.
Since What links here is a special page, it should have been a Special page tab. Also, unlike special pages, it has a talk page. If you click on it, the talk page of Help desk will be reached. I will clarify this more elaborately, if you want.Vanischenu mTalk 04:46, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
I'm trying to figure out what you mean but I'm stumped. Any page that you go to where you click what links here, the tab at the top points back to the original page, in whatever namespace it is in, and the talk page is to that page's talk page. So if you go to an article and click what links here the tab at the top is to the "Article" and the talk page goes to the article's talk page. All pages in the Wikipedia namespace are described as project pages but that is just a description. They're still in the Wikipedia namespace.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:45, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
I believe this is a consequence of the fact that Special:WhatLinksHere is not its own page, but rather a certain way of viewing a page. It's not the only page: Special:MovePage also acts this way. The reason I would think is because WhatLinksHere and MovePage are specific to a particular page so they could set it up that way (and it makes sense that they did doesn't it?) BrokenRedirects and PrefixIndex and ProtectedTitle etc. all are non-specific to a single page. True but the whole scheme was not set up apparently to have perfect consistency; Wikipedia, in many respects, organically evolved with different developers all having their hands in the pie. The software is available free under the GNU license but how you license the documents you create with the software is your choice - it doesn't affect the software license. Manuals for internal use in an organization would usually be fully copyrighted by the organization but if you want to share the manuals with other organizations you could consider one of the free licenses. GNU Free Document License might not be the most suitable for your purposes so take a look at Creative Commons license for the variety of options available under the CC system. Hello world,

I recently created and uploaded this SVG image to Wiki Commons and used it in this Wikipedia article.

After some additional editing of the SVG image - including a change of aspect ratio - I updated it at Wiki Commons, where it is being display properly. However on the preview page Wikipedia obviously still preserves the old aspect ratio and so shows the SVG image distorted: click me - actually the HTML defines the image size as width="800" height="566" while it should be 800*381.

Any idea on how to get the aspect ratio right? Is this a permanent bug or will a batchjob realize the change in aspect ratio as some point?

The short answer is that you can't. The information you provide has to be verifiable by other editors, so just listing the mother's name wouldn't help (though an interview with her conducted by a third party would be helpful). I cant get my computer to run except in safemode. Even when it gives you a choice of 3 different safemodes to start in & RUN WINDOWS NORMAL, I can click on run windows normal and it still boots in safemode & is very slow. I just found that hovering over a footnote inside the article text triggers the display of a Reference tooltip. When had this been enabled? Hello, I had created an article on shawlsmith london, it is the only company to internationally produce and distribute scarves in the city of raleigh and the entire state of north carolina. The article was speedily deleted citing A7. THe facts that I have mentioned already signify the importance of shawlsmith london to the city and state of raleigh and were not included in the article. Their designs mix british sophistication with southern charm which also does not exists in any brand in the world. Each year they recruit many new interns from the south who are able to use their platform to become better leaders. None of this aformentioned information was in the original article. What was missing was evidence that the company was notable. And indeed a Google search suggests that it is not - the first 30 hits for "shawlsmith london" included no third-party reference to it. How about the notable fact that it is putting a small southern city on the map with accounts in major retail stores such as Neiman Marcus, Barney's etc. How much more notable does it have to be? The notability guideline for businesses and organisations is at WP:ORG. The general notability guideline is at WP:GNG. The company must satisfy one or the other to merit an encyclopaedia article here. Celebritycafe.com appears to be a listings site. Listings are not "significant independent coverage", and nor is the fact that various websites offer the copmany's products for sale. Selling things made in a small city to big national shops does not make a company notable. What you need is articles about this company. Newspaper or magazine articles, tv coverage. Real news or features, not advertising copy or press releases, which verify the company's achievements in terms of the criteria in the notability guidelines. The company had articles written about it in a couple news affiliates that are in print and I was not able to get their information which is why I did not use them as a source. I will rewrite this article when I do. You're welcome. Do bear in mind that just finding the coverage isn't enough - the sources must be independent, reliable and credible, and the coverage must confirm the assertions you make in the article as to how the company satisfies the notability criteria. And once you've established notability, you then have to ensure the article is neutral. The sentences Orange Mike quotes belong in a publicity brochure, not an encyclopaedia article, and would certainly get the article flagged as WP:SPAM. Just an added caveat - you seem to have a good knowledge of the company, and to care about whether or not it is has an article on Wikipedia. Have you read WP:LUC? Many of those programs were produced by local TV stations, many weren't preserved on video tape or kinescope, and even if they were, they may have been wiped or erased as the station may have recycled or reused the recording media. Hi, I have a question about NRHP articles and another question for references. I've done a fair amount of poking around Wikipdeia, and I've discovered the "edit", "history", and other buttons and places and policies like the "manual of style", but it seems like the manual of style is a general guideline, and doesn't have many specifics for the topic I want to write about, NRHP. How should that type of article be designed / written? My second question is how do references work and how should they be used? I clicked the edit section button for a references section on an article, and all it had was "

It's an interesting idea, although it might be hard to define sort schemes for things like "category/genre". We have no control over WikiGrain at www.wikigrain.org. It is an independent website not run by the Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia. I see they have a feedback page. You could try using that but I don't know how they treat requests for removal. As http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Veilleux shows, the page was deleted from Wikipedia. The url http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Veilleux gives a HTTP 404 Not Found error message to visitors and should not be indexed by any search engines. To see if somehow I was logged in as someone, I went to an edit page and saw that I was not logged in as anyone.

Ignore it completely. Since you are not logged in through an acocunt you are identified by the software by your IP address. These are not only assigned sometimes to multiple people, but they can change over time and even fairly often. The message you saw was left for someone who made an edit back in February 2011 using the same IP address currently assigned by your ISP to you. See also the notice at the bottom of Special:Contributions/76.102.193.39 which says in pertinent part "This is the contributions page for an IP user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. You may have published something valid, but because it involves your own writing, it should be evaluated before being added to Wikipedia articles uncritically. I am wondering whether it's possible to add a date parameter to a URL, so that the content from the last revision before that date appears, e.g., something like "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swansea_City_A.F.C.?as_of=20110407" to show this page as it appeared on April 7, 2011.

The URL modifiers are listed at mw:Manual:Parameters to index.php. As far as I can see, the only way to access an old revision is by using the "oldid" parameter. And when you use that, you don't quite get the old version of the page, as the old page is rebuilt using today's versions of any relevant images or templates, not the versions in use at the time of the old version. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:00, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Succession and nav box not showing

The Succession box at the bottom of the 1909 Wimbledon Championships page does not show (Chrome, IE, FF). The same applies to the Wimbledon navbox {{Wimbledon Championships}}. On all other Wimbledon Championship pages, e.g. 1908 Wimbledon Championships these boxes appear normally. The code for the boxes is present when editing the page. I've just uploaded a revised version of a file, but when I go back to the article that uses the image it still displays the old version. Dear Sir / Madam,

In the present scenario, 'N' number of companies are cropping up bringing out many Nutritional Products for weight management and also targeted areas such as Herbalife International, Forever Living, Amway, Unicity and so on & so forth. The cost of the products are very high, though the quality is good. These companies show the result pictures also. Their plea is that the grains, fruits and vegetables which we are using are not at all having any nutrition when they come to our houses due to growing methods, storing methods and cooking methods. Is it that much true or to increase their business these companies are creating panic among people? They are distributing money as commission to the extent of 73 to 75% among the associates. Are these products are really worth of that cost? Everybody is concentrating on political, social or other problems except the nutritious food problems which is the main problem. Food can change a person's mentality also. Nobody is giving prominence to this point. Is this politically motivated thing? It is unclear what you are asking, but if you think there is a problem regarding our Herbalife, Forever Living Products, Amway or Unicity articles, I'd suggest raising them on the relevant article talk pages initially. You will have to be more specific though. And note that we base articles on published sources - we don't engage in investigative journalism, or scientific research, or other enquiries into the nutritional value of products, or into whether they can 'change a person's mentality'. On a purely personal note, I'd suggest that if you have worries about the nutritional effects of expensive products pushed by multi-level marketing, you might do better to buy similar products from more conventional sources instead. [edit] Wikipedia is so confusing for someone who wants to create a page

Dear Wikipedia,

I want to create a page for something that doesn't yet have a page. Do you know I ended up spending hours clicking through wiki page after page of technical instructions, policies, guidelines, and when I tried to do the editing "sandbox" etc - I could not understand how to edit text in the sandbox (where was the text I was supposed to test edit?) or create a new page. Even trying to contact you to send this comment was complicated and I had to click around FAQs for 10 minutes even though I kept clicking on a "Contact us" link. I'm not sure if I'll try again. It's the kind of thing where you need someone who has already edited pages to sit and show you what to do. The instructions are pretty confusing and bad, in my experience they didn't succeed.

It's true that you only have a certain kind of contributor - someone who is already code savvy and can spend hours and hours figuring out wikipedia's techno jargon.

Don't despair, the fact that you have managed to post here is an indication that you can edit a page - that is what you did here. Don't worry too much about the formatting - just type away in your sandbox. You can always ask someone to help with the formatting until you get the hang of it. Trying to create a new article is quite daunting to a total beginner so a good way to figure out how stuff works is to do minor edits to already existing articles such as fixing typos and so on. The truth is, while Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit, it is not the encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It is just as it is with many things in life: sometimes it takes time and patience to get used to it. However, if you really want to edit here and have the patience to learn the necessary basics, the rest will come naturally. A good place to start might be Help:Wiki markup. Try to experiment a bit with it at Wikipedia:Sandbox. Go to the page, click Edit and try some stuff out. If you need help with the wiki code, feel free to ask. My page (Thatchers' Fine Timeless Fabric) has been deleted due to inadequate and unreliable sources. I want to research additional evidence to prove notability then be able to repost.

Depends on the source and the context. Are you trying to paraphrase a speaker's direct-speech quote into indirect speech? If so, it might be better to leave it as is, and source it. Alternatively, you could say something like X said that (s)he believed it was a network show when (s)he saw it, and didn't accept that the difference between cable and network dramas was their degree of intelligence, although it seems n overcomplicated way to do it and you'd still need to source it just the same. On the other hand, if this is not a direct quotation from someone then it's personal opinion, which doesn't belong in a Wikipedia article no matter how you reword it. - Karenjc 18:47, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Is there a particular reason why you're wanting to paraphrase them? I can see they might be seen as a tad unwieldy, but paraphrasing the whole thing and necessarily having to stick it into indirect speech won't make it any shorter. The alternative is to say something like "X said the concet of Awake is based on the concept of not being able to distinguish between dreams and reality", which is short and sweet but loses a lot. You'd really be better taking these changes to the article's talk page and looking for consensus. - Karenjc 19:47, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

I see you wrote it at User:Hitm6337/sandbox, and it's quite OK to invite others to look at it there and offer feedback. It's also not necessary to use large or nonstandard type when asking questions. That said, you're very welcome to Wikipedia and warmly encouraged to join us and improve the encyclopaedia. OK, I've had a quick look. There are various issues, but the article's main problem is that it does not address notability. There is no assertion of why this company is notable enough, by Wikipedia criteria, to have an encyclopaedia article. The article needs to show, with reference to multiple independent reliable sources, how the company satisfies either the general notability guideline or the specific notability guideline for businesses. Unless it does, the article will almost certainly be speedily deleted as soon as it goes live. I have done a Google search and I cannot find any significant independent coverage of the company - no news articles or features about it, just its own website (which doesn't count) and those of companies that list its products. It may be that you can find some sources, but if not, then the company will not satisfy the inclusion criteria at this time. I've now removed the collapsed text from this page. because it doesn't belong in mainspace, and would encourage you to continue working on the article in your sandbox if you feel you can improve it to the point where it satisfies the criteria. - Karenjc 19:21, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

User talk pages shouldn't be fully protected, however some administrators will semi-protect their talk pages due to persistent harassment. Many of them offer an unprotected talk page which you'd be able to edit; aside from that, you could leave a note on the article's talk page. I find that I can edit fairly well from the default browser on my Rhyme with my phone's T9 dictionary on. I'm actually writing from my phone now. The easiest edits I make are things that don't require typing like undo and rollback. If you can't find evidence of that writing anywhere in the world, I forsee the article being deleted. If you can find that source text, it won't be. It is that simple. All that Wikipedia articles need to be kept is substantial source material to draw from when writing the article. No source material means no article.
