Jefferson Airplane - After Bathing At Baxter's [Full Album]
After Bathing at Baxter's was released in 1967 and is the third album by the San Francisco rock band Jefferson Airplane. Unlike Surrealistic Pillow, released earlier the same year, After Bathing at Baxter's is classified as psychedelic rock because it eschews the more commercial type pop songs, such as "Somebody to Love," that appeared on the earlier LP. As such, it was a watershed album; Jefferson Airplane was now a much heavier rock group. Jorma Kaukonen's electric guitar was especially more to the forefront in both volume and tone. Divided into "suites," this musical shift is typified by longer and more experimental compositions such as the nine-minute instrumental "Spare Chaynge" and Grace Slick's mammoth and unusual "rejoyce," an homage to James Joyce's novel Ulysses, with its quirky arrangement and Jack Casady's stentorian bass line. Many of the album tracks reflect the band's heavy use of the drug LSD. The cover art is by artist Ron Cobb. The album peaked at no. 17. The first single, "The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil," barely missed the top 40 mark, charting at #42 while the second release, "Watch Her Ride," charted at #61 on Billboard. Both singles made it to the top 40 in the Cash Box Top 100. The band would continue its major commercial success the next year with Crown of Creation. Track listing: 1. The band was founded by singer Marty Balin and guitarist Paul Kantner in 1965. With the addition of Signe Anderson, their male-female singing style showed their folk music roots plus Balin's love of R&B; singing styles. This was recorded in a 1967 live performance, when nobody already did things like these in rock music: in this performance Jefferson Airplane mixed their traditional folk-rock inspirations with an amazing jazz sound, featuring astonishing guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, with his unmistakable gibson sound, unique bassist Jack Casady and jazzy drummer (RIP) Spencer Dryden. incredible jam-out of the psychedelic song "The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil"! Psychedelic music could also be interpreted as simply a "surreal and dreamy feeling" in a particular song, instead of a specific genre with rules to follow. In some cases, this simply requires writing one coherent song, then to experiment recording that song in the studio while under "psychedelic influence", yielding very surreal musical results. A classic example of this method is "Bass Strings", by Country Joe And The Fish. This early track, written and recorded by Country Joe and the rest of his band in 1966, was obviously an upbeat, hasty, and offensive song of protest in a raw jug band influenced style. In 1967, this song changed dramatically, not to meet more contemporary commercial standards, but rather to re-record it as an experimental track while under the influence of LSD. The new psychedelic result was clearly self-evident in Country Joe's first studio album ("Electric Music for the Mind and Body") when "Bass Strings" featured a much slower tempo, delayed vocals, added reverb, studio reversed cymbals, electric organ, desert traveler lyrics, and a continuous blues guitar solo which together make this song a very, in the true sense of the word, "psychedelic" track. The Jefferson Airplane website states that (the album), "After Bathing at Baxter's" was the group's attempt to capture what the psychedelic experience sounded and felt like to them from the inside."
