General notices

  • The Great American Wiknic will be held in cities across the US in June 2013, with help from the Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) committee.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation is developing a new notification system for MediaWiki, code-named Echo. It is designed to augment (rather than replace) the watchlist. In the first release, it will notify you when you are mentioned on a talk page, when your edits are reverted, when a page you have created is reviewed, and when your userrights change. Deployment on Wikipedia is planned for mid-April, but it is already live on MediaWiki.org (see the testing page). For more information, see the FAQ.
  • First round of Wikimedia Individual Engagement Grantees announced – financial support for individual contributors to Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on making online improvements. Includes Wikipedia-oriented development projects. Eight grant proposals were approved. Round two of the Individual Engagement Grants begins August 13, 2013. The current approved projects that involve Wikipedia are:
    • Replay Edits – led by User:Jeph paul, funded at $500. Jeph is building a MediaWiki gadget that creates a visual playback of the edit history of a Wikipedia article, allowing users to see an article changing over time.
    • MediaWiki data browser – led by User:Yaron K, partially funded at $15,000 in order to pilot the initial concept. Yaron’s project will create a framework to allow any user to easily generate apps or websites to browse sets of structured data that exist on Wikipedia and other projects running on MediaWiki.
    • The Wikipedia Library – funded at $7500, led by User:Ocaasi. For this project Ocaasi will be building and consolidating partnerships with reference providers donating access to reliable sources for Wikipedia editors, and improving the systems for managing these programs.
    • The Wikipedia Adventure – funded at $10,000, led by User:Ocaasi. It will be an on-wiki game that will be piloted on English Wikipedia using the Guided Tours extension to determine whether this type of interactive learning is an effective engagement strategy for new editors.
    • Build an effective method of publicity in PRChina – led by Chinese Wikipedian User:AddisWang, funded at $350. Addis and a small team of volunteers based in mainland China will be experimenting with social media campaigns to grow awareness of Wikipedia in China.
  • The tip of the day is only proofread and updated through April 13th. Beyond that, most of the tips need to be checked for relevance and accuracy! The Tip of the day department needs your help to revise the scheduled tips (and replace them with new ones where needed). This must be done for each tip before it gets auto-displayed on the Community portal (as each tip does year after year).

Portal report

The following portals are in need of attention/upkeep:

  • Portal:Space – the selected article excerpts were copy and pasted between 2006 and 2009. The leads of the corresponding articles have greatly improved since then.
  • Portal:Azerbaijan – news section has reports from 2009.
  • Portal:Language – "Language-of-the-month" hasn't changed since June 2009. Monthly picture since March 2012.
  • Portal:Thinking – "selected" sections need new material. Been the same for years.

The following portals have interesting design features that you may find useful:

  • Portal:Philosophy – cycles through 52 "Selected philosophers", one per week, automatically year after year.
  • Portal:Arts – uses random generators to display random featured status selections.
  • Portal:Spaceflight – integrates with WikiProject Spaceflight, using the same formatting, and linking to it on its main menu as "Astronaut Cafe".
