LucasArts Licenses Developer Wishlist

This was originally published on April 3, 2013, after we got the news that LucasArts as we knew it would be shutting down. In honor of Star Wars Day, we're sharing it with you again. We remain hopeful that new developers will get a chance to make their mark on Star Wars' rich video game history.

Today the news broke about LucasArts closing, leaving us to wonder about the game licenses now in the hands of Disney. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger indicated last year that the company wants to focus on licenses, but Disney could also sell some of its older licenses off.

With LucasArts out of the picture, we picked the developers we think would be great candidates to take on some of these licenses.

Star Wars: Jedi Knight – Ninja Theory

If Jedi Knight gets a reboot, it will need a strong developer to rejuvenate the series. With Ninja Theory’s success rebooting Devil May Cry, it just might be the company for the job. Jedi Knight II had a lot more action-adventure segments, and Ninja Theory proved it has that flair with action combat. Ninja Theory has a knack for making classic systems feel fresh, and it would be interesting to see how the company would reinvent a property as well known as Star Wars.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Bethesda/BioWare

Role-playing games are always a tricky fit, as they need great dialogue, intriguing characters, an all-encompassing story, and fluid combat. If any companies have what it takes to make Knights of the Old Republic tick again, Bethesda and BioWare are the frontrunners. BioWare originally developed Knights of the Old Republic with LucasArts, so it already knows the subject matter. Add in that BioWare has since matured and could use its dialogue and choice systems from the Mass Effect series to create its deepest experience yet. But EA might be gun shy after its Star Wars: Old Republic MMO not being as successful as desired. In that case Bethesda would be the best option; it’s clear from the company’s work on Elder Scrolls and the Fallout series that it knows how to create an interesting world – a mandatory requirement for setting a game in the Star Wars universe.

Indiana Jones – Ubisoft Montreal

Ubisoft Montreal has captured action and the sense of adventure with franchise like Prince of Persia, Far Cry, and Assassin’s Creed. Scaling walls and immersive backdrops are in this company’s blood. Ubisoft Montreal could finally catapult the Indiana Jones franchise into something truly special. Not many of LucasArts’ Indiana Jones games were good, but with Ubisoft Montreal in the picture, maybe Indy can finally have a video game crusade that measure up to his movie success.

X-Wing – Chris Roberts

Chris Roberts has proven he knows his way around a space combat simulation with the Wing Commander series and Freelancer. Taking the reins on the X-Wing series would be a natural fit for him. Since Wing Commander stood as X-Wing’s main rival, it would be interesting to see what the last guy standing in the space combat simulation universe could do. Roberts is working on his own game Star Citizen, but imagine what he could if he applied his wealth of experience designing space combat games with Star Wars’ well-loved universe.

Star Wars: Battlefront – DICE

DICE has been plenty busy with the Battlefield series, but it’d be nice to see them step into a new property. A team-based shooter with vehicular combat like Star Wars: Battlefront is a perfect fit. The Swedish developer stands out for its great engines, focus on unique team-based games modes, and exceptional implementation of vehicles into gameplay. Jokes have been that Battlefront is pretty much Battlefield: Star Wars already; the time is ripe to see what creative mechanics DICE would add to the series.

Star Wars: Empire At War – Stardock

Stardock has a great track record with strategy games and a commitment to getting them just right. The company has also tackled sci-fi storylines in Sins of a Solar Empire, which already has a Star Wars mod. Stardock has always been about hardcore strategy, and it could take Empire At War to a new level.

LucasArts Adventure Games – Double Fine/Telltale

Who wouldn’t want to see Tim Schafer return to working on the series that put him on the map? His current studio, Double Fine Productions has proven it still has plenty of passion for the genre with its latest adventure game Broken Age. Can you imagine what he could do if he had the rights to Full Throttle, The Secret of Monkey Island, and Grim Fandango? Maybe he’d find himself working with Ron Gilbert again on a new Maniac Mansion. If Double Fine can’t acquire the license, Telltale Games is the next best option. The company has shown its love for the genre and continues to drive adventure games in new directions. Plus, Telltale already has experience with the Sam & Max series and developed Tales of Monkey Island.

Where would you like to see some of these franchises land?

  • Disagreeeeee with Star Wars going to DICE. EA would milk it badly like they were trying to do with BF + MH. Agree with the rest, especially with KOTOR going to Beth :D

Edit: Actually, I'd rather not have Beth on KOTOR, they haven't quite figured out third person view AFAIK and a first person KOTORwould just feel like Fallout.
  • Personally I highly disagree with Ninja Theory for Jedi Knight, since the FPS combat was always equally important to the series. I think I'd still keep Raven software at the helm.

DICE for Battlefront would be perfect though, especially with how great Battlefield 3 is.

Don't have much experience with Stardock's games, but I love Empire at War. Looking into Stardock I think they're a better fit than my original developer idea (Firaxis, for their work on X-COM, despite it being turn based and not RTS and not having the conquest stuff Empire at War did).

Naughty Dog would actually be my first choice for an Indy game if they switched the values around (less gunfights and platforming, more puzzles and fist fighting), but Crystal Dynamics could probably do a decent one as well with the recent Tomb Raider.
  • Another Bioware Knights game sounds great with more Mass Effect style story-telling, but it's kind of a mixed bag with the fee crap you get from EA these days. But an Assassin's Creed style Indiana Jones game?! Sign me up! The Battlefield/Call of Duty look for a Star Wars Battlefront game, as much as its series' inspiration is cliched, would be a feel that might be perfect, and I hope that those teaser trailers for First Assault prove real. Awesome choices all 'round.
  • I'd rather Bethesda not work on a Star Wars game, they have enough on their plate with Fallout and Elder Scrolls. I can't wait for more from both franchise, picking up a Star Wars game will only prolong the wait for more FO and ES.
  • Obsidian needs to take the reigns on KOTOR
  • Was never really a big fan of Star Wars video games. I'm not overly concerned where the licenses land as long as it's not in EA's toxic, parasitic, infectious hands.
  • I know DICE won't pick up Battlefront imply because they would basically be reiterating their own franchise but with lasers and space battles. Though I hope the next iteration, if it happens, does play like Battlefield.
  • Ninja Theory on the list? Please... I would understand platinum games or ID software but not those dudes that don't know how to make polished and refined gameplay. Knights of the Old Republic goes to CDPR, since Bethesda are crap at story telling, and bioware has went downhill.
  • I'd be very happy with a KOTOR 3, so long whoever did it was up to the task :)
  • Staff
These all look like good picks to me. Hopefully some of these IPs get resurrected on next-gen consoles.
  • Activision could reskin COD4 again putting in some stormtroopers with arabian accents with laser guns and charge $30 for 4 mltiplayer maps each month. And then, after finishing the game they could lay off the Devs.
  • Agree for most of the suggestions.. I don't like EA, but most of the games should settle on their rightful home like KOTOR on Bioware. DICE or Crytek would be great on SW shooters too.. Lucas Arts adventure games should be handled by Schaefer or Gilbert (hopefully they can acquire the licence of IP they made).. Bethesda RPGs are good but I didn't like what they did to Fallout series. Although Fallout 3 was a good game but it wasn't essentialy the same game. It was Elderscrolls on a Fallout skin..
  • Honestly, Ninja Theory would be a great choice for a Star Wars game. I think DmC was generally awful, but story-telling has always been their strong-point, and I could see that translating well. As well, they clearly stepped their game up with DmC's combat, and even if it's isn't up to DMC3's standard, I could see them doing well with lightsaber-combat, which needs a slower, more deliberate style of gameplace.
  • I agree with all of these. A good pick for the Indiana Jones license could be Naughty Dog. They can handle cinematic experiences thanks to the Uncharted series.
  • The Force Unleashed = Santa Monica
  • I would rather see KOTOR go to Obsidian. I liked The Sith Lords a little bit better. And Ninja Theory for the Jedi Knight series would be fantastic! I really want to see Kyle Katarn again :(
  • Good fits for the series listed
  • I think I would go with Relic for Empire at War. Either that, or sticking with Petroglyph.

  • We can maybe hope for Kotor 3 now, or at least an HD remastering of 2 with an actually complete game instead of the 3/4 done project Obsidian was forced to give us haha.
  • I'd like to see Crytek take over the Battlefront franchise.Since they recently acquired Free Radical studios (who originally working on a third Battlefront game before being shut down by Lucas Arts),they could pick up where they left off and finally finish Battlefront 3.
