Latin Grammy Nominations: Calle 13 Lead With a Record 10

Calle 13, the Latin Grammy favorites who cull multiple nominations for the award with every album they release, have done it again. The duo made up of Eduardo Cabra and Rene Perez -- which already has 10 Latin Grammy awards under its belt -- is now up for 10 more, a new record.

The Puerto Rican urban duo were nominated for Album of the Year and Best Urban Music Album for "Entren Los Que Quieran"; Record and Song of the Year for "Latinoamerica," from the same album; Best alternative song and Best Short Form Music Video for "Calma Pueblo;" Best Tropical Song for "Vamo' a Portarnos Mall"; Best Urban Song for "Baile de los Pobres"; and Producer of the Year (with Rafa Arcaute) for "Entren Los Que Quieran." Calle 13's 10th nod is for Album of the Year on Shakira's Sale El Sol, where they co-produced one track.

This may be the first time in recent memory that a single act garners simultaneous nominations for three different songs in three different genres: Tropical, urban and alternative.

Calle 13's producer and engineer Rafa Arcaute followed in number of nominations with six, including Album of the Year for "Entren Los Que Quieran," Record and Song of the Year for "Latinoamerica," and Producer of the Year.

Among artists, following Calle 13 in sheer number of nods was iconic Venezuelan singer/songwriter Franco De Vita, with five. De Vita's live set, "En Primera Fila," is up for Album of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Album and Best Long Form Music Video. In turn, his single "Tan Solo Tu" is up for Record of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video.

Another veteran act, Marco Antonio Solis, gathered four nods: Song of the Year and Best Regional Mexican song for "A Donde Vamos a parar," Best Male Pop Vocal Album for "En Total Plenitud" and Best Regional Mexican Song for "Tu Me Vuelves Loco."

In a twist, for the first time, perhaps ever, most nominees for Album of the Year were commercial successes. Nods went to Enrique Iglesias' "Euphoria," Shakira's "Sale el Sol" and Franco De Vita's "En Primera Fila." Also up for Album of the Year is Alex, Jorge y Lena, the album that joined Spain's Alex Ubago, Cuba's Lena Burke and Colombia's Jorge Villamizar, and, of course, Calle 13's "Entren Los Que Quieran."

The only regional Mexican nod in the main categories went to Los Tigres del Norte, whose song "Golpes en el Corazon," which features pop star Paulina Rubio, is up for Record of the Year. It competes with Calle 13's "Latinoamerica," Franco De Vita's "Tan Solo Tu" (featuring Alejandra Guzman), Luis Fonsi's "Gritar" and Ricky Martin's "Lo Mejor de MI Vida Eres Tu" (featuring Natalia Jimenez).

Billboard Mexican Music Awards Finalists Announced

Nominees for the Song of the Year award are Solis's "A Donde Vamos a Parar," Martin's "Lo Mejor de Mi Vida Eres Tu" ( penned by Eric Bazilian, Claudia Brant, Andreas Carlsson, Desmond Child & Ricky Martin), Jorge Drexler's "Que El Soneto No Nos tome Por Sorpresa," Pablo Alboran's "Solamente Tu" and of course, Calle 13's "Latinoamerica."

In the Best New Artist category, nods went to Spain's Alboran, Uruguay's Max Capote, Brazilian sensation Paula Fernandes, who's had that country's biggest-selling album of the year, Italy's Il Volo and Puerto Rico's Sie7e.
