The 81 year-old German composer, orchestra chief and conductor Claus Ogermann will be awarded with the German ECHO Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award 2012. He worked with Frank Sinatra, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Diana Krall. Further internationally noted jazz stars are among the winners in the 30 categories of the German ECHO Jazz Award: singer/songwriter Cassandra Wilson and American producer Harry Weinger for his 50th Anniversary Collection of Creed Taylor. Bestseller of the year are Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton with the album Play The Blues Live From Jazz at Lincoln Center. The ECHO Jazz is awarded each year by the German Phono Academy, the cultural institute of the German Association of the music-industry (BVMI).

For albums to be nominated, they must have been released between November 1, 2010 and October 31, 2011 and also have received two outstanding reviews from music journalists. The twelve jurors of this years' jury choose the winners out of 230 nominations. In 2010 the ECHO Jazz honor was awarded for the first time. The date and the location of the award ceremony will be announced in May. On the German music market, jazz has a share of revenues of 1.6 percent of total revenues of €1,669 billion in 2010.
