DVD software shipments and DVD player sales continued to rise in the first half of 2004, the Digital Entertainment Group announced today (July 15) at the Video Software Dealers Assn. Home Entertainment convention in Las Vegas.

A total of 649 million DVDs shipped to retailers in the first six months of this year, an increase of 52% over the same period last year. More than 3 billion DVDs have shipped since the format launched in 1997.

About 13 million DVD players were sold in the first half of 2004, up 25% from last year. More than 103 million DVD players have sold since the format launched.

Additionally, 62 million U.S. households now have DVD players. About 25 million homes have more than one player, an 8% increase over the first six months of last year.
