'Monty Python' Headed To Broadway

"Monty Python's Spamalot," a musical based on the 1975 movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," will hit Broadway in February 2005. The musical and the movie are a comedic spin on the story of King Arthur, his knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail.

The musical will star Tim Curry as King Arthur, David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin and Hank Azaria as Sir Lancelot. Mike Nichols will direct. Eric Idle, one of the original members of the Monty Python comedy troupe, wrote the book and co-wrote the musical's music and lyrics with composer John Du Prez, who is best known for his work on the 1988 film "A Fish Called Wanda."

"Monty Python's Spamalot" will debut at Chicago's Shubert Theatre, where it will run from Dec. 21, 2004, to Jan. 16, 2005. It then heads to New York's Shubert Theatre, where previews begin Feb. 7 before the production officially opens March 10.

The "Monty Python" musical is among several projects that are being adapted from the big screen to the stage. Musicals reportedly in development or in the discussion stages include "Catch Me If You Can," "Spider-Man" and Pink Floyd's "The Wall."
