Review: 'Copperhead' Is A Slow-Moving, Predictable, But Worthy Civil War Drama

just now | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

A Civil War movie without a battle scene is like…wait, what? A Civil War movie without a battle scene?! That is “Copperhead,” a sincere, slow-moving, occasionally successful film devoted to one specific homefront story. That, in itself, is noteworthy. After all, as many of the characters in Ron Maxwell’s film point out, in addition to the costs on the battlefield, there were many, many costs at home. Life carried on, uneasily, and as the war raged the number of fathers and sons who would return home upon its conclusion grew smaller and smaller. With such a stunning body count, it is not surprising to hear that there was a vocal minority against the conflict — including some Northerners. “Copperhead,” based on a novella by Harold Frederic — whose “Damnation of Theron Ware” F. Scott Fitzgerald called “the best American novel” written before 1920 — is the third straight Civil War film for Maxwell, »

16 minutes ago | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

In an age when no one’s privacy is safe, even Big Brother has to worry about keeping his secrets.

The debut trailer for The Fifth Estate, a true-life thriller about the hemorrhage of government data in the Wikileaks age, depicts the early years of the clash between the most powerful nation on Earth and a group of well-connected hacker journalists.

Judging by the trailer, the movie seems to lean toward celebrating the rebel forces of Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his Wikileaks brethren, but director Bill Condon (Kinsey, Gods and Monsters, Dreamgirls) tells EW that’s not his intent. »

'Dear Mr. Watterson' Trailer: Love Letter to Calvin and Hobbes

2 hours ago | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Well here's something we're pretty sure Calvin won't be peeing on.

Bill Watterson basically yelled "peace out!," dropped his pen like rappers drop microphones and ducked out of the public eye after changing the world of comic strips with "Calvin and Hobbes." He's been legendarily protective of the property, too, which is why we haven't seen some animation studio's adaptation with Justin Bieber voicing Calvin (or whatever, which would have probably been even worse than that). We're positive that those truck stop stickers featuring Calvin peeing on basically everything aren't authorized.

Watterson was included in Time Magazine's Top 10 Most Reclusive Celebrities list, so you know that dude ain't coming out of hiding.

Director Joel Allen Schroeder and his pals raised close to $100,000 on Kickstarter about four years ago for a documentary (which he began work on way back in 2007) that's less about Watterson and more about the impact of the »

Quade Cooper can exorcise his demons in Super Rugby play-offs

2 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Reds No10 could heal the mental wounds he sustained at the World Cup with a storming performance this weekend

Quade Cooper's middle name is Santini, a seemingly apt name for a conjurer. It means "little saint" in Italian and is derived from the Latin word sanctus. It's a name evocative of doves and miraculous acts by much loved and worshipped figures. Of course, we all know Cooper can perform miracles – the Reds' 2011 highlights reel provides ample evidence of that – but his dilemma is that most Kiwis detest him. He's no saint to them – he's the devil in a gold jumper.

Cooper has unquestionably brought a large part of that contempt upon himself by kneeing All Blacks captain Richie McCaw in the head in a Tri-Nations match before the 2011 World Cup (Cooper claimed contact was accidental and was cited but later cleared over the incident). McCaw, unlike Cooper, is revered »

Kristen Wiig: The Michael Jordan of Michael Jordan Impressions (Video)

3 hours ago | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Krisen Wiig kicked butt as Suze Orman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Elisabeth Hasselbeck on "Saturday Night Live" (we're going to go ahead and say Target Lady is a real person, too).

But this week, she unleashed her greatest impression yet: Michael Jordan.

Armed with a bald cap, a Chicago Bulls jersey and a flawless imitation, Wiig  paid a visit to fellow "SNL" veteran Jimmy Fallon on Monday night's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

The host questioned the NBA legend (and Mlb... not-legend?) about his career. It was abundantly clear just how much research, preparation and homework went into her impression.

Then, of course, Jordan decided to sing. You know, as per his usual. It's just too bad "he" didn't duet with musical guest Adam Ant. But maybe next time?

We don't know what Jordan is up to, but Wiig will next be seen in "Girl Most Likely." »

Emma Roberts Arrested: Allegedly Bloodied Boyfriend's Nose

4 hours ago | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Generally the domestic violence cases that make the headlines involve male on female abuse.

But in the case of Emma Roberts, police arrested her after responding to reports of a fight with her boyfriend and "American Horror Story" costar Evan Peters. The incident took place earlier this month in Montreal, Canada, according to TMZ, who broke the story. The couple were allegedly overheard fighting in the 22-year-old Roberts' hotel room on July 7.

Law enforcement responded to a phone call and found Peters with a bloody nose and a bite mark, according to the TMZ report.

Roberts, who is the daughter of "The Dark Knight" and "The Human Centipede III" actor Eric Roberts and niece to Julia Roberts, was sprung from jail after just a few hours as her beau declined to press charges.

The TMZ story says Emma's friends deny that any biting took place and said both of Roberts »

Box Office: Two Ryan Reynolds Misfires in One Weekend?

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fox bows its second DreamWorks Animation title, “Turbo,” on Wednesday, and tracking suggests a sluggish five-day opening in the mid-$30 millions. But “Turbo” won’t even be the weekend’s biggest disappointment, with Universal’s pricey sci-fi comedy “R.I.P.D.” expected to top out in the high teens from Friday to Sunday.

Both pics feature Ryan Reynolds: “R.I.P.D.,” also stars Jeff Bridges, while Reynolds voices the lead snail in racing toon “Turbo.”

R.I.P.D. is looking like the third big-budget box office flop in a row, after “The Lone Ranger” and last weekend’s “Pacific Rim.”

The Fox-dwa toon hits theaters while “Despicable Me 2″ still is doing sizable business: The sequel fell just 47% in its second weekend and has cumed $234 million domestically through Monday.

That said, family tracking is always difficult to nail down, and “Turbo” could overperform slightly if word-of-mouth builds enough to entice adults. »
