WikiProject Religion aims primarily to organise, neutrally develop, and improve the series of articles on religion in accord with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. It also seeks to ensure NPOV across articles related to religion. It is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. Scope[edit]

The scope of this project is all articles in the Category:Religion. Specifically, this project hopes to deal with all articles relating to the religious observances, rituals, and practices, the histories of such practices, and related biographical articles. (For articles dealing with the stories which often contribute to the development of such practices, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Mythology.) However, given the existence of several projects covering specific areas of the category, we will be placing the majority of our attention in the following areas:

  • (1) We will work to create, improve, and maintain those articles which deal with religion in a non-sectarian sense (God, theology, religion, etc.), as well as articles about specific religions which do not yet have projects which deal with them. This would include, but not be limited to, those listed on the List of religions, which do not clearly fall under the scope of any of the daughter projects below. As a rule-of-thumb guideline, this would include those faiths which have no existing projects and those articles whose content relates to at least three, non-overlapping, extant projects. Also, those articles about specific religions with extant projects which are of significant importance to one or more of the topics in the broad religion field, will be considered within the scope of this project.
  • (2) We will assist in the assessment of articles in the field of religion, particularly those articles which have not yet been assessed.
  • (3) We will try to assist in the maintenance of the Portal:Religion and other religion-related portals.

Improve the bird's eye view[edit]

The entire subject and Wikipedia's coverage of it is intended to be summarized in the Outline of religion and its branch outlines. These are in turn is part of Wikipedia's outline system which is one of Wikipedia's main contents systems.

Please look it over and fill-in missing topics. If Wikipedia has an article or article section about those topics, please add links to them.

While analyzing the outline, please answer the following questions (and fix the outline as needed):

  1. What's missing?
  2. Is the structure of the outline (sections and indents) representative of the subject?
  3. Does the outline help understand the relationships between the topics presented in the best way possible?

The overall purpose of the outline is to help readers comprehend the subject by showing what belongs to it, and within the subject what belongs to what.

The outline is a taxonomy of the subject, and also serves as a table of contents and navigation aid to browse Wikipedia's articles (and article sections) about the subject.

It is also a useful tool for the WikiProject to analyze, plan, develop, and revise related material. It is a hub from which to organize related topics.

It was built as a "reverse outline", a structural model of an existing work, which in addition to being a summary of the work, can reveal the gaps and other weaknesses for revision purposes.

But the "theology" that resonates most with me and that I have 17 years of experience with is Paganism, specifically Wicca. I've studied various pagan and/or "goddess" cultures, Egyptian, Sumerian, Celtic, Yoruba, etc. I'm Jewish (by birth) and have read most of the Torah, as well as the King James Bible, and am pretty familiar with large chunks of it. I love learning about religion, studying all the different amazing ways that people in this world worship their varying concepts of divinity.

  89. AlphaLobo: I have studied women's history at the college level, on my own, and with friends who enjoy the subject. I can see why Wikipedia is having trouble with this and can DEFINITELY help to clear things up; for example there needs to be a differentiation between paganism, women's history, and gylanic studies. They're all VERY different from each other and I can outline the differences and provide references to professors who can provide more detail and help.   116. Evanh2008 is well read on the Abrahamics but also has an interest in eastern religions, particularly Hinduism. Most of my edits to articles falling under this WP will relate to either Judaism or Christianity, in that order (of frequency).
  117. St John Chrysostom Δόξατω Θεώ Latin rite Catholic seminarian. Biblical studies, theology, and philosophy of religion. Extremely well-versed in most areas of Christian theology (including Catholic, Orthodox, and traditional Protestant views; extremely applies to Catholic and Reformed alone). Have many, many sources (including a personal copy of the 170-volume Migne Patrologiae cursus completus), and access to many more through seminary. Wikipedia focus: the Bible. Real life focus: Aristotelian-Thomist philosophy and theology. Also knowledgeable in Judaism and Islam. Also interested in countering systemic bias in a reverse way, as traditional perspectives are oft left out completely or militated against, and WP:RNPOV is not applied evenly. I dabble in most fields - feel free to ask for any help needed. My knowledge of Eastern religions is limited to undergraduate study/BA in comparative religions.
