Summary

Sup dawg, sometimes "Yo dawg", was famously used by American rapper Xzibit on Pimp My Ride, an MTV program which secretly improved cars of unsuspecting owners, often to a ridiculous extent. Sometime in 2007, the scientists at 4chan picked up on this, and used the expression on image macros, generally showing things being taken too far.

Response

butthurt

In February, 2009, Xzibit suggested via Twitter that users of the meme "[...] jump on something sharp to kill" themselves. This led to the creation of the macro above, depicting Xzibit with no braids or humor. After realizing that he was coming off as humorless, he tweeted "I DO have a sense of humor!"

Xzibit ain't mad @ ya

Origins

Between 2004 and 2007, MTV presented a popular show in the United States called Pimp My Ride. The general premise of the show was to secretly upgrade the subject's car, often by including things relevant to the subject's interests, and usually were easily breakable, expensive to maintain, a hassle to replace, and a good target of theft. Examples include adding a swimming pool, a clothes dryer, a blender and microwave, flat-screen TV, entertainment center, fridge, and so on. Pimp My Ride ran on MTV between 2004 and 2007, but this meme did not appear until 2007.

Current status

Sup Dawg is now an old meme.
