Bought for my son that was deployed to Afghanistan so that he could understand some of the dynamics in that country. He said it was good information for him to know.

I finally got the reissued copy of the "go to" book on Afghanistan. Very disapointing. What we have here are a page or 2 of SLA Marshallesque AARs by Russian officers to their superiors in a "learning" environment. Nothing in Russia has no concequences especially losing! The write ups are vague, limited to a very shallow overview by commanders without the in the trench look. The strip maps are a nice touch but can be hard to translate. The book does demonstrate that the Russian army tried to use less men and more firepower for almost 10 yrs and left. Of course we can do it better with more technology and less men and couldn't. We, just like the Soviets, do not fully understand our enemies and deal with them like we're selling them a car or insurance. Gen Hagenbeck supposedly read this along with Gen Petreus' think team and we still are losing. The Afghans, a small 4th rate in everything except heroin and faith beat down the top 3 major powers in almost 200 years. The only thing that has changed are the weapons used by both sides! If you watch "Restropo" and "The 9th Company" they are almost interchangeable! Almost none of our current military generals ever saw combat prior to this operation! None got shot at as Lts in Viet Nam, Desert Storm or any of the smaller fracas our troops have been in lately. The senior generals all got their "combat bump" as GENERALS!!! Very Scary. I did 4 tours in the US Army in Iraq but never got to Afghanistan. We didn't learn in Iraq either, another "Wag the dog" war!
