But the epic blockbuster is also opening some doors for new talent. We already know that young actors like John Boyega and Daisy Ridley will be having their profiles raised thanks to the help of the new Star Wars film, but now news has come down that they will be joined by two more newcomers. StarWars.com has revealed that unknowns Crystal Clarke and Pip Anderson have signed on for parts in Star Wars: Episode VII. Both were found by the production through the open casting call that was held at the end of last year. 3Rd Update, 4:15 Pm Pt: Despite the massive opening and 2nd frame hold of Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age Of Extinction overseas, the Top 10 international titles are down 29% on last year and 38% on last weekend. Much of that can be attributed to Taoe which sucked a lot of air out of the market coupled with the World Cup which led studios to strategically avoid certain dates. In 2013, Despicable Me 2 catapulted from No. 5 to No. 1 thanks to a big offshore expansion that was worth $88.8M. Other movies playing well abroad included World War Z, Monsters […] »

Karlovy Vary Film Review: ‘Asthma’

58 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Junkie life is as chicly miserable as its most vapid chroniclers have always had us believe in “Asthma,” a feature directorial debut from actor Jake Hoffman that is sorely in need of its own inhaler. Taking a perversely slow approach to fast living, Hoffman’s film glumly examines the trail of all-purpose destruction left by New York heroin addict Gus (Benedict Samuel) on a weekend bender, but can’t resist having it both ways, as his scuzzily narcissistic lifestyle is also shown to have improbable sexual allure to at least one clear-headed woman (Krysten Ritter) with better options. Ritter’s performance is the liveliest thing in a callow, shallow cautionary tale, which wears its influences on its artfully frayed sleeve and no closer than that to its heart. A sprinkling of cameos from past-prime names is unlikely to make distributors breathe any easier around this dull-eyed downer.

See The Zero Theorem Poster That Was Banned For Nudity

2 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Hey, remember when the MPAA heroically saved us all from seeing too much of Eva Green.s nipple on the Sin City 2 posters? Well, those same heroes are back, and this time, they.re saving us all from seeing Christoph Waltz.s bare butt in the new poster for Zero Theorem. It.s at this part of the story where I.d normally tell you to be careful if you.re at work before scrolling below, but I.m honestly not sure there are any bosses in the United States who would can someone for glimpsing a butt crack from a million miles away. So, as you can see, I went ahead and embedded it at the top of the article. Because it.s not over the line at all. Still, the MPAA apparently thought different, and they informed poor director Terry Gilliam about the news earlier this month. »

Is Mark Wahlberg Going To Be The New Six Million Dollar Man?

2 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Mark Wahlberg is riding high on box office success right now. Released just in the waning days of last month, Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction - in which Wahlberg stars as hero Cade Yeager - has already banked $174 million domestically and $575 million globally. While a lot of credit goes to the power of the Transformers brand and even Michael Bay's name, executives are still looking at Wahlberg now like he's a big 'ol bag of cash. It's not too hard to believe that other franchises are interesting in bringing him aboard - which is where this latest rumor comes from. The Tracking Board is now saying that Universal is looking to bring the 1970s television series The Six Million Dollar Man to the big screen and that Mark Wahlberg is being eyed to star. What's more, they claim that Peter Berg is both producing and possibly directing. »

China and South Korea Sign Co-Production and Import Deal

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Hong Kong – China and South Korea have signed a film co-production agreement that was described as a “landmark” by officials.

The deal was signed by China’s Cai Fuchao, director of the State Administration of Film Radio and television (Sarft), and South Korea’s minister of culture Yoon Rin-ryong following a two-day visit to South Korea by China’s president Xi Jinping.

The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries in June last year. But it may fall short of a full scale co-production treaty, which both China and South Korea have with other countries.

Instead the new pact appears to focus on allowing South Korean films to avoid China’s import quota system.

“South Korea-China co-productions, once recognized as China’s home-grown films, can bypass China’s limitations on foreign movie imports, so the pact would facilitate the South Korean film industry’s advance into the Chinese film market, »

AMC has released a 30-second The Walking Dead teaser clip from the upcoming fifth season.  I don't keep up with the show, but from what I know about it, this clip seems spot on: humans are afraid of zombies, and the zombie makeup effects are awesome.  Beyond that, I leave it to the fans to sound off on this brief teaser. True Blood Recap: “Fire In the Hole”

4 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In "Fire in the Hole," True Blood made clear that in addition to seeing old faces and spending nostalgic time with the main characters, it also plans to kill off a bunch of people.  This house cleaning should have been done years ago -- the show added villains just to kill them off each season, but meanwhile, also expanded its arsenal of supernaturals to unwieldy proportions.  It's not that the sprucing is a bad idea, it's just poorly timed.  Now, it just feels like a way to create some drama in a season that is ping-ponging around too much to create any depth on its own.  Will it turn out that the entire series is just Lafayette's drug-induced dream?  It would make more sense.  Hit the jump for why "we can't be biting, fucking and sucking in the moonlight." The final season of True Blood doesn't seem to know whether it's coming or going. »

The Leftovers Recap: “Penguin One, Us Zero”

5 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While the first hour of The Leftovers was a portrait of grief and confusion for a population whose ranks has disappeared (by 2%), "Penguin One, Us Zero" really amped things up in the supernatural department.  This idea of "more mystery, and how!" was initially a worrisome thought, because the show seemed more powerful without it.  But this second hour improved over the first, setting up plenty of conflict -- both internal and external -- to keep The Leftovers from going stale.  Hit the jump for how I promise not to use any more puns (maybe). The meta-theme of The Leftovers so far seems to be finding one's place in the world -- an existential crisis made very real and pertinent in the wake of The Sudden Departure.  Regardless of where those who were taken went (to somewhere blissful, or to an alien holding cell), the question remains for those left behind: why not us? »

Recap: ‘The Leftovers,’ Season 1, Episode 2, ‘Penguin One, Us Zero’

5 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

If the pilot for Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s “The Leftovers” established the landscape of the show — one where semi-supernatural phenomenon bump up against personal drama — the second episode, “Penguins One, Us Zero,” makes a smart play and narrows the focus. Unlike “Lost” which forever expanded the question marks around the central mystery, Lindelof pivots much more wisely here to the repercussions on his characters. For now, “The Leftovers” is less concerned with what happened and why, and instead on how it has altered the people still dealing with the loss and grief three years later. Identity is the theme that courses through this week’s episode, both in how characters are perceived from the outside, and how they perceive themselves. And Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) finds himself battling the preconceived notions of those around him, along with his own disquieting awareness that he might be going crazy. He’s haunted by vivid dreams, »

Speaking at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland on Saturday (July 5), Smith added: "So we go to the set and they're actually shooting, and they're shooting - and this is what I can't tell you what they were shooting - But what I saw, I absolutely loved.

Karlovy Vary Lures Hollywood, Inspires Wes Anderson

It took me a few days to get the hang of Karlovy Vary. The first morning, as I headed off in the wrong direction from my quaint hillside Cajkovskij Palace Spa and Wellness Hotel, a helpful couple pointed me toward a deep staircase heading straight down toward the Festival Central at the mammoth Hotel Thermal, renowned for its mineral pool. The local waters are famous --the idea is to buy a little cup and slowly sip from a series of fountains along the river. Mike Cahill, the director of the fest's opening night movie "I, Origins," said the water tastes like warm blood.
