Newspapers.com is a newspaper database in the family of companies associated with Ancestry.com. Their database includes more than 73 million pages from 3,000-plus newspapers, mostly local United States papers with some Canadian and elsewhere. (Lists: http://www.newspapers.com/papers/ and http://www.newspapers.com/browse/). It is particularly suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 34 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States. the collection includes some major newspapers for limited periods (i.e., 50 years of the New York Times), but mostly consists of regional papers from the 1700s onward. Very few titles go beyond the late 1980s.

They have generously offered the use of 100 accounts to their database of American Newpspapers. This is part of a pilot program with the Wikipedia Library; if successful, it may be expanded and extended.

Citation and Open Access[edit]

  • Editors should always provide original citation information, in addition to linking a Newspaper.com article, per WP:V and WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT
  • Editors should not provide bare links to non-free Newspapers.com pages
  • Citations should include a link to a "Clipping" (see subsection below)
  • Make sure to include the {{Open access}} template in citations of clippings, we want our readers to know that they can access these articles.
Example
<ref> {{cite news|title=Obituary Notes: Charles Wingate |url=http://www.newspapers.com/clip/141558/the_new_york_timesnew_york_new/|newspaper=The New York Times|date=September 2, 1909|page=9|via = [[Newspapers.com]]|accessdate = July 21, 2014 }} {{Open access}}</ref>

Using the Open Access "Clipping" function[edit]

Both Newspapers.com and The Wikipedia Library would prefer that articles citing Newspapers.com be linked to clippings. Clippings allow Newspapers.com subscribers to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Thus users who click on a Newspapers.com Clipping link will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .

  1. DutchmanInDisguise (talk · contribs · count · email) I've been editing for more than five years, in several languages, and am very much interested in history, music and baseball. I'm looking forward to using this access to enhance my editing. Thank you! DutchmanInDisguise (talk) 21:27, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi @DutchmanInDisguise: Looking at your recent contribution history: you haven't been very active in creating new content that would be benefited by this resource. Do you have a research agenda that you could describe for so that I could better understand how you will use the archive? Are their any particular gaps that you think would benefit from this access?Sadads (talk) 17:00, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi @Sadads: You're right. My contributions have been only intermittent. You can see the articles listed on my user page which I've created, or made major contributions to. Having access to extensive newspaper files would certainly have enhanced these contributions. But it looks like this research tool (Newspapers.com) would be of more value to a "Wikipedia regular", which I don't claim to be. DutchmanInDisguise (talk) 16:26, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
@DutchmanInDisguise: Pending when accounts become available. You will be waitlisted until more accounts become available. You demonstrate enough regularity, that you qualify, I just wanted a little more affirmation that you planned to use this actively for content development, Sadads (talk) 14:52, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

  2. Danimations (talk · contribs · count · email) I do a lot of work on mining, industrial and natural history subjects. This access would allow me to develop pages of content beyond the borders of my home country of Australia.
Hi @Danimations:, I am going to waitlist you for the second round of this accounts when they become available because your content focus has largely been Australian/natural history, which should be better benefited from the other Wikipedia Library holdings that you applied for. Do you have a more specific reason why you need access to American newspapers?Sadads (talk) 17:43, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

  3. Smartyllama (talk · contribs · count · email) I have edited Wikipedia in English for close to a decade now. I have made several thousand edits during that time. I will use my account to add sources to existing material as well as to new material I create. This will especially be true for articles related to Connecticut, New York, college athletics, international sporting events, baseball, (American) football, and other sports to a lesser extent. Smartyllama (talk) 21:27, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi @Smartyllama: I am going to waitlist you for the second round of accounts for this partnership, because you are not very frequently active and other users would likely get more use of this account (though when you are active you contribute to content). Would that be okay? Sadads (talk) 17:43, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

I just passed 10k edits recently. I've become more active recently, spending a lot of my time at AfD. Having access to this database would be a great help when trying to locate references during notability arguments. I accept that notability may be demonstrated with references that are not on-line, but as a practical matter, it is difficult the judge when somebody says, I've found a reference in XYZ newspaper, but you'll have to take my word for it that it establishes notability -- RoySmith (talk) 00:21, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Apply[edit]

We currently have more applicants than we have accounts for Newspapers.com (100) for our pilot. If you are interested, please still apply: you may come off the waitlist of applicants as we process accounts, and extra applications for accounts will help demonstrate the level of interest for the partnership. To apply, add yourself at the bottom of the list with a line starting with #{{user8|USERNAME|Project=code}} (eg. {{user8|Example|Project=en}}) followed by an explanation of why you believe the access would be beneficial to you. It is a good idea to include in your application text: your depth of experience with Wikipedia and other WM projects, your editing areas benefited by access to Newspapers.com, and examples of your commitment to content creation.

  1. --Ziko (talk) 18:08, 28 July 2014 (UTC) I write on Wikipedia (mostly German Wikipedia) usually about the history and political system of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, about knowledge and about constitutional history (since 2003, more than 30,000 edits globally). An example is de:Enzyklopädie.
Hi@Ziko:: you more than qualify for the partnership, but can you confirm that Newspapers.com will be useful for your topic area? It mostly focused on American regional newspapers, many of them would not have good sourcing for the topics you mention, Sadads (talk) 18:46, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
  2. MrLinkinPark333 (talk · contribs) I am involved in many WikiProjects. Recently, I been going through the backlog and participating in AFD discussions. This would help me find sources that are needed quickly. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:35, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi @MrLinkinPark333: Could you please explain how your plan to use this source for content development? From looking at your recent user contributions, and based on your description of activities, your are mostly working on administrative tasks. As a relatively young account, it would be preferable to have examples of your work with content expansion, Sadads (talk) 17:00, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
@Sadads: Here's an example of an AFD discussion that I participated in where I found sources that allowed an article to be kept. Discussion 1 --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:21, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
@MrLinkinPark333: My main concern with that example, is that the sources you found, never became part of the article. We want this content to be used actively through editing articles for expansion. Can you please provide an example of that? Sadads (talk) 14:52, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
@Sadads: I'm not quite sure about expanding, but here are some examples of some editing I've done in Wiki. In the Anthony Napoleon article, I heavily reduced the number of sources. I also contributed edits to Bãi_Bằng that helped make the article less confusing. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:50, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
  3. lentower (talk · contribs · count · email) Would let me find sources to articles that need additional sources, and improve the over 1500 articles I watch. — Lentower (talk) 00:33, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi @Lentower: Could you be more specific about how this access will help you develop content in the topic areas of focus? What resarch agenda will it benefit? Sadads (talk) 13:49, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
My editing interests include articles local to Boston as well as contemporary music & science and technology worldwide. I also edit articles as I consult them as a reader. Regularly as I try to find good sources for them I come across sources in newspapers behind paywalls, that I can't access or use. It appears this access would get me behind the paywalls. — Lentower (talk) 17:28, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Hey @Ryoga Godai: Most of your edits have been on more recent pop-culture materials, which the Newspapers.com account doesn't cover very well. Please search through the available content and make sure that this is really the database you need access to, Sadads (talk) 17:00, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

@LaurentianShield: Looking at your editing history, you are not frequently expanding content. Do you have a specific research agenda that would benefit from this access? Could you please better explain it here? Sadads (talk) 13:49, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
I have about 40 new articles since 2012 or so, most fairly substantial. One was listed in the San Francisco Bay Area portal for a while as a "did you know" which I think exemplifies my research interest. It is about a innovative business manager named Isaac Friedlander who used new technology to make California into a major wheat producer. This is relatively unknown, and technologically related. I lean towards those "stories" that have a large ratio of practical impact compared to what people know commonly. I use a variety of resources, but historical newspapers a big one.LaurentianShield (talk) 22:24, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

I have also come across hits on Newspapers.com during the course of AFDs that I haven't been able to verify, which has been frustrating on a couple of occasions as the articles have been deleted due to "lack of sources" which I feel might have been avoidable had the sources been accessible/verifiable. There are a great many American designers, particularly Winnie and Coty award winners/nominees that I would like to produce more articles on, and Newspapers.com would be invaluable for this. Most of my articles are biographies, and I would be able to use newspapers.com for valuable information detailing the subjects of these articles. -- Caponer (talk) 00:51, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
  26. ceyockey (talk · contribs · count · email) I am active in rescuing deadlinks and I feel that Newspapers.com would provide content in gaps not covered by HighBeam (I have a subscription to this as well). Thank you for considering my request for an account; let me know if you want to have additional information. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 01:21, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

  30. Hoops gza (talk · contribs · count · email) I am a five-year editor with almost 60,000 edits. I primarily edit American sports-related articles, and this would allow me to expand my contributions beyond the free resources available online. - Hoops gza (talk) 20:42, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
  31. The Discoverer (talk · contribs) An editor since 2006 with around 3000 edits, I mostly edit topics related to India, Catholicism, and science. I hope to use these resources to improve the historical perspective of articles. The Discoverer (talk) 11:58, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
  32. GDuwen (talk · contribs · count · email) Autoconfirmed, autopatrolled and file mover user registered in 2007. Seven years in Wikipedia with 8,581 edits (23 GAs). I edit mostly pop-culture related stuff (music, movies), from time to time history or other miscellaneous articles. The articles comprehend mostly topics that range from the 1940s to 1970s, and I'm always on the look for reviews or news pieces from back in the day that are sometimes difficult to find on other sources like Google Books (many times only snippet views are available). I'm an active contributor, and I'm always glad to work on articles of older things, equilibrating the tendency to the recentness of topics. I'm positive that the access to this sort of information would help a lot in creating more complete articles or expanding the existing ones.--GDuwenTell me! 16:07, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
  33. Diego Grez (talk · contribs) I have been editing Wikipedia for almost eight years (in one month to be exact!), and think that access to US newspapers -despite my work is mostly Chile-related- will help me contribute better to this project. Diego Grez (talk) 18:26, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
  34. Racconish (talk · contribs). I contribute since 2008. Above 11,000 contributions to WPen, 29,000 to WPfr, 56,000 altogether. I am an active mediator on the French project and the access would help suggest consensus orientated improvements. Thanks, — Racconish ✉ 13:31, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

  36. A Texas Historian (talk · contribs) I've been focusing on early Navy Midshipmen football and some general early American football (1880s-1920s). Newspapers.com has already proven to contain a lot of the information I need, so actual access would be very helpful. - A Texas Historian (Talk to me) 19:49, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
  37. MisterCake (talk · contribs) I've been on Wikipedia 3 years and currently have 10,488 edits. Though I do have other academic interests they seem covered here; most of my edits pertain to American college football in the South in the early 20th century. Access to newspapers would allow one to better reliably source material–for a great deal of the information is from sportswriters, and discover more about those personalities behind the sport. 38. Chris troutman (talk · contribs · count · email) I'm a Wikipedia Visiting Scholar at University of California, Riverside. My access through them doesn't include newspapers.com and I need an account to help research the myriad articles I'm writing for the university. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:37, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
  39. Coretheapple (talk · contribs · count · email) I've written and edited articles related to various facets of American history, and have been in the past aided by database access that I no longer have. This would help greatly. Coretheapple (talk) 19:21, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
  40. Thine Antique Pen (talk · contribs · count · email) I've edited Wikipedia for a few years, and have created over 9,500 articles about a wide variety of subjects. I have over 120 DYK articles, a number of Good Articles, and have made over 45,000 edits to enwp. I am looking for access to US newspapers in order to get a global perspective on various historical events to improve my future article creations. 41. Gatoclass (talk · contribs · count · email) I have been a registered user since 2006 and an admin since 2008, in that time I have made over 60,000 edits and authored over 300 articles including about 180 DYKs. Many of my articles would easily be GA if not FA class though I have rarely submitted them to either process. I have been somewhat inactive for the last three years due to increased off-Wiki responsibilities, however, I now have the opportunity to return to a higher level of editing and am looking forward to doing so. Currently, my main areas of interest are ships, shipbuilding, and US businesses and biographies; access to newspapers.com would be invaluable to my research as old newspapers are among my most important sources. Gatoclass (talk) 10:03, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
  42. Teblick (talk · contribs · count · email) I have been editing for slightly more than one year, with 43 articles created and more than 4,000 edits. My main area of interest is old-time radio. I have found back issues of publicly available newspapers to be useful with regard to both people and programs of that era. Being able to use this database would provide access to even more newspapers that I can use in creating new articles and improving existing articles. Thanks!
