BNA This user has access to the British Newspaper Archive through The Wikipedia Library

Account Coordinator: Chris Troutman will be approving accounts and collecting email addresses.

The British Newspaper Archive (BNA) is a newspaper database gathered from the British Library's holdings of newspapers (for more information on what gets digitized see the discussion of the partnership). This database includes the newspapers listed at the "Available Newspapers" subpage and these resources are particularly suited for 18th, 19th and early 20th century British and Global news events and people content: their current collection includes mostly regional papers and very few titles go beyond the 1950s, many stopping in the early twentieth century. The initial pilot generously offered offered 100 accounts distributed in July 2014 and was expanded to 200 accounts in October 2014. All accounts will be issued for a full year.

Requirements[edit]

  • You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia; (see Special:Preferences)
  • You have an account that is a minimum of 1 year old
  • You have a minimum of 1000 edits to the encyclopedia
  • You are active in content generation, research, and/or verification work

Expectations[edit]

Approved editors may
  • Search, view, retrieve, and display portions of restricted content
  • Electronically save portions of restricted content
  • Print out single copies of portions of restricted content
  • Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of the BNA website they are accessing
Approved editors will not
  • Share their account logins or passwords with others
  • Mass scrape or mass download BNA content
  • Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose
  • Datamine metadata without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles
  • Use the access provided through the Pilot for any commercial purpose
Private and confidential information
  • You will need to have a confirmed email address to participate. You understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia Library, and British Newspaper Archive. While Wikipedia Library coordinators are volunteers (not employees or contractors of the Wikimedia Foundation or British Newspaper Archive), they have signed confidentiality agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation with regards to the personal information they may handle for the Wikipedia Library.

Further participation[edit]

Here are a few ways you could help The Wikipedia Library effectively leverage this partnership:

  • Add "{{Wikipedia:BNA/Userbox}} to your user boxes if you have access to this database. This helps us share our project with other experienced users.
  • If you discover something valuable or of public interest, the British Newspaper Archive is interested in having guest bloggers on their blog (see http://blog.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/). Guest blogging has many benefits: it gives the opportunity for both The Wikipedia Library and BNA to profile our partnership, it gives the guest bloggers a new platform to share their editing experience with others (which is good for the Wikimedia community), and BNA will change the access of the newspaper page in question to Open Access (which is good for public knowledge). To find out more, contact our volunteer coordinator.
  • Alternatively, if you keep your own blog: BNA is willing to release newspaper images for your use on your own blog (with appropriate copyright statements of course).

Completed applications[edit]

As BNA makes more accounts available we'll approve more applicants for use. Even if we have more applications than available accounts, feel free to sign up in the pending applications and waitlist section. Increased Wikipedian participation helps demonstrate interest to our partners, and helps us understand how many accounts might be of use! For an archive of applications for users who received accounts see /Approved

  1. JackofOz (talk · contribs · count · email) I have well over 100,000 edits and have initiated many hundreds of articles. When researching articles, I have often been frustrated to be unable to access contemporary obituaries or other biographical material. I am very active, mainly in the area of classical music. I am also a long-time contributor to the Wikipedia Reference Desks. Thanks. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:38, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Approved @JackofOz: You have been approved for an account. Expect an e-mail from me shortly with further instructions. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:41, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
  2. Edison (talk · contribs · count · email)49,000 edits over the past 9 years and 31 articles created. I patrol articles and try to add refs when I find an ill-referenced or unreferenced article, particularly in articles dealing with 19th century science, and this archive would be useful in referencing articles dealing with advances in science and technology, as well as military and biographical subjects. Edison (talk) 00:52, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Approved @Edison: You have been approved for an account. Expect an e-mail from me shortly with further instructions. Chris Troutman (talk) 15:56, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
  3. Rosiestep (talk · contribs · count · email) I am a sysop with over 80,000 edits; I've created thousands of articles since 2007 and over 1,000 of them have appeared in the DYK section of the mainpage. This resource would be valuable for creating additional articles. Thank you for considering me. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:50, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

I am an active mediator on the French project and the access would help suggest consensus orientated improvements. Thanks, — Racconish ✉ 13:33, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

  7. SatuSuro (talk · contribs · count · email) 100k editor, with range of edit fields/threads - I was in London in August and registered with and using BL and NA facilities, now realised that I have returned to Australia with limited access to materials that would encourage further and broader usage of materials similar to what I have been able to utilise with Trove - the Australian equivalent... Have strong interest (but to date low edit) in scottish borders and Trove captures Australian collections mainly... satusuro 13:42, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

  11. Jacqke (talk · contribs · count · email) Many of the 19th and early 20th century musician biographies I write would be enhanced by historical newspaper access. An article I just wrote, Seth Weeks, might be flushed out with access to a European newspaper, because the Europeans did not have an issue with him being a successful black-man, as Americans did at that time. He was promoted in Europe and newspaper access would help show that.Jacqke (talk) 20:08, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

  1. Hobbes Goodyear (talk · contribs · count · email). I actively use Highbeam access to improve article content and verification, and I will use BNA access similarly. I will follow the recommended method for citing BNA refs. --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 11:27, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
@Hobbes Goodyear: Can you provide diffs for your assertions? I don't see evidence that you've used Highbeam to create content. If anything, you seem to use it to confirm deletion votes at AfD. Chris Troutman (talk) 19:17, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
