false information[edit]

hello

im khalid alghamdi i would like to let Wikipedia know that there is an issue with the page, the part where i think is 100% wrong and i think its insult to Islamic characters and i would like you to change that.

the link Al-Hakam II

it's at the Personal life

where it says

n his youth his loves seem to have been entirely homosexual.[4] He was known to have openly kept a male harem.[5] This exclusivity was a problem, since it was essential to produce an heir. A resolution was reached[6] by his taking a concubine, Subh, who dressed in boys' clothes and was given the masculine name of Jafar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kanon7070 (talkcontribs) 01:13, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

There are what appear to be reliable sources attached to each of these statements, which seem to reflect historical fact. Do you have any citable, reliable sources to contradict the information in that section of the article, or are you just objecting because you think it says something derogatory about the subject? You do realize, don't you, that there have been historically important homosexuals throughout history who were adherents of Islam, just as there have been historically important homosexuals of other faiths? General Ization Talk 01:17, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
And for future reference, the best place to post a message about a proposed inaccuracy or to express other concerns about an article is on the article's Talk page rather than on this Help Desk. General Ization Talk 01:23, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Help with move request[edit]

I created a draft on Vince Cardell (draft:Vince Cardell) because there is already a re-direct. Because re-direct was not created as such, I can not move the draft over the re-direct, so I made a requested move so that an administrator would move it over the re-direct. It went through the commentary period, and the non-admin closer did not close for moving, but instead sent it to Articles for Creation. As a regular AfC reviewer, I certainly could have done that myself. I don't particularly want to wait the normal 2 months an AfC can take, and this is mildly annoying. What process should I have used to move my article to the mainspace over the re-direct? Thanks! 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 03:04, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done. 78.26 I have done the move. It seems to me that you acted properly, and the closer of the RM discussion didn't correctly understand what was being requested. posting here was a good way to attract admin attention to the issue. You could also have used {{helpme}} I suppose, or sent a talk msg to any active admin. DES (talk) 08:04, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

I noticed the word ' also ' is being used to annoy.

I don't use ' also ' when it's obvious the idea expressed is related to the previous statement. It's very bad grammar. Someone amongst you is a middle easterner perhaps.

' also ', someone amongst you is a middle easterner. Also I think you have bad grammar and also it's obvious you have a conflicting interest in there who is using ' also ' when it's an annoyance.

Posts that complain about a problem but don't tell us which article they are referring to are also annoying. AndyTheGrump (talk) 05:56, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
Posts that accuse someone of being a "middle easterner", without saying middle east relative to what, are also annoying. Maproom (talk) 07:09, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
Editors who assume that what is obvious to them is obvious to everyone are also annoying. So are editors who appear to assume that there is something wrong with being a "middle easterner", however that might be defined. DES (talk) 07:56, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
"Also" in an article can sometimes be an example of editorialising, in which case it is best removed; but it is not always a problem. However, if you see a way in which an article can be improved, you are welcome to do so. --ColinFine (talk) 10:42, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
I've also been annoyed by the use of 'also' in various biography articles. As a person is a part of more and more projects, their article is often expanded by adding bits of information to the end of the biography or career section of the article. You can see this a lot in biographies of actors as they go from one movie to the next. It's a lazy way of adding more information. That said, you could take it upon yourself to channel your annoyance into cleaning up the prose and making well written and flowing paragraphs of these 'also' sentences. Just creating an article instead of submitting to Articles for creation?[edit]

I created a draft, then submitted it to Articles for Creation--however, it's not about an organization or individual, so I could have just moved it to the main space instead of using the AfC process. Is there a way to remove it from Articles for Creation? Rauisuchian (talk) 11:37, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

@Rauisuchian: anyone can create/move any article directly to live space, but that just means it is immediately going to be subject of heavy scrutiny and subject to potential speedy deletion. After a quick view of the draft I would question if the subject as presented meets WP:GNG - outside of the essentially primary source of the tetra blogs, there doesnt seem to be significant third party coverage. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:23, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
or maybe not, some of the iO9 seems more relevant than initially appeared. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:29, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
@TheRedPenOfDoom: Do Articles for Creation get reviewed by multiple people or only one reviewer? Rauisuchian (talk) 14:14, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rauisuchian: it is generally one editor at a time. If it is initially rejected, then another editor may be the reviewer upon a second submission, or it might be the same one. And there is no way to know how many people may look at an article and decide "no that's not a submission I want to formally review". -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 23:04, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Vandalism or just bad editing?[edit]

An article that I started in January has been edited by somebody without an account. I'm quite short of time at the moment and I can't work out if he or she was trying to do something useful or just vandalising the article. If somebody has some time to spare, perhaps they would have a look at it for me please? Ernest Stafford Carlos is the article in question. Alansplodge (talk) 13:02, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

I do not know if the changes made are correct or not, but the breakage of the infobox appears to be bad editing. I have fixed the infobox. Someone with some knowledge of the subject will have to look at the edits and determine if they are good changes. -- GB fan 13:20, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

We would require third-party sourcing for that. Your personal website would not be acceptable unfortunately. I'll see if I can find anything, and add your name to the article if I can confirm it. For future reference, you might do better to post on the article talk page if you have further information - please note that per the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guideline, you are strongly advised not to edit the article yourself. I've done some research and the history of "The Comets" after the 50s gets complex See http://www.rockabillyhall.com/billhaley.html for a list of those part of the Comets at one time or another. This does include Johnny Kay. Also Bill Haley Father of Rock 'n' Roll (https://books.google.com/books?id=_l_1NkpGBrEC ) would probably be suitable as a reference.Naraht (talk) 21:09, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Did my page get deleted?[edit]

I created a page, "Quality Tubing", and recieved some feedback from some editors. I went ahead and made the needed changes, but now when I search for "Quality Tubing", it has been redirected. How can I find my site again to edit it or has it been deleted? If it has been deleted, how do I try again? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kkaplan92 (talkcontribs) 19:38, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Your article has been changed into a redirect - but the previous version is still visible in the history: [1] Frankly, I would have to suggest that 'trying again' would be a waste of time though - the business concerned is a part of another company, on which we already have an article, and nothing in your article suggests that the business would meet our notability guidelines as an independent subject. It was also blatant advertising, and cited no sources whatsoever. AndyTheGrump (talk) 19:44, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Writing styles - what tense should be used? Present tense as though a narrative or past tense as we recount something[edit]

I am translating articles from French into English and have been told that the French write in the present tense and the English wiki writes in the past tense. Is that correct? Where can I find out about house styles?

Many Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.30.43.203 (talk) 23:36, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

I can't speak to the conventions of French-English translation, but we do typically write here of events that have already occurred and people who are deceased in the past tense, rather than as a narrative in the present tense. Otherwise, we write about our subjects in the present tense. See MOS:TENSE. And more generally the English Wikipedia Manual of Style. General Ization Talk 23:50, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Should an article be listed in both parent and sub-categories ?[edit]

Is there some good reason why a film article should state both parent and sub-categories to which that film belongs? The particular manifestation is Schindler's List, which is listed in 'American biographical films', 'American epic films' and 'American war films', so there is no possibility of the reader not realising that this is part ofCategory:American films. Text at the head of that category page says 'For convenience, all American films are included in this category. This includes all American films that can also be found in the subcategories.' Surely that isn't the same thing as the parent category must be SHOWN on ALL American film articles?

A discussion has taken place on my talk page here:[2]. Clarification would be helpful, I've tried checking Wikipedia:FAQ/Categorization and elsewhere but nothing seems to answer the question. It is in order to prevent 'categorization bloat', and because the parent category in this instance is so huge as to be unhelpful to the reader, that I ask the question. Many thanks.Pincrete (talk) 09:08, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

Not sure what the film project decided, but it sounds like the correct use of WP:DUPCAT to me. - X201 (talk) 09:58, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
It may be technically correct, but is it useful? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:06, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
Category:American films with 29,819 pages may not seem very useful for browsing but there are other ways to use categories like Wikipedia:Category intersection#Tools currently available. Other countries have far fewer film articles, for example Category:Romanian films with 174 fitting on one category page. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:27, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
Dodger67 asks the central question, is it useful? A category with 30,000 entries and 30,000 articles listing that category in addition to the 'subs', seems silly. I can see the sense of much smaller categories (eg Romanian films), where it is both practical to list together, and also possible to imagine a reader wanting to know about that subject.Pincrete (talk) 17:45, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
What information can Category:American films impart to a reader that its subcategories can't? If the answer is "nothing meaningful" then the category should be fully diffused to its subcategories. Most meaningful "intersections" are actually embodied in the subcategories. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:11, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

I created an article -" Poonguzhali"[edit]

Hello, Greetings! I created an article -" Poonguzhali" . Its a character from a Tamil novel. I searched for an image in google an uploaded in my page. The usage rights of that image is 'Not filtered by license' . Actually the image is an artist's representation of that character in a newspaper . What should i do to make the image in my page constant? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kayathiri E (talkcontribs) 10:14, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure about the image but after having read the Poonguzhali article, I think that you should point out in the lead paragraph that it is a character in a novel and not a real person. There is nowhere in the article that it says anything about it being a character. Dismas|(talk) 10:41, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
(edit conflict)If no authentic image of Poonguzhali is available, I don't think Wikipedia is improved by including a fictitious one. Incidentally, while the article has no references, it is in danger of being deleted. Maproom (talk) 10:42, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
How can an article contain a real image of a fictitious character? AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:47, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
The article now states that its subject is fictitious. When I looked at it, it didn't; it said that its subject was the wife of Uththama Chola. Maproom (talk) 12:52, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
1. Fictious subject: I've added the info, based on the User:Kayathiri E message above. Did I that wrong?
2. It still says Poonguzhali was the wife of Uththama Chola. Is it wrong? I thought it's possible the novel describes a fictious character related to a real, historical person. If it was a mistake, feel free to revert. Be bold. --CiaPan (talk) 13:15, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

If an article contains statements that you believe are not only malicious but also defamatory, see the libel policy for reporting the article to WMF. Wikipedia page for company[edit]

Hello

I am looking to open a wikipedia page for my 10 years company with 400 employees how can i do that?

Thanks a lot A — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.200.207.218 (talk) 14:15, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

First of all, please read WP:COI which strongly discourages you from creating an article about your company. If you still want to create one, you need to find evidence of significant, independent coverage from reliable sources, about the company, to show they are notable enough per WP:GNG and WP:CORP. If you think they're notable enough, then Wikipedia: Article Wizard is the way for IP users to create draft articles, which will then be reviewed by other users to see if it meets Wikipedia standards. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:19, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
And note well that it is NOT a "Wikipedia page for your company" it is a "Wikipedia encyclopedia article about a company" and that it will be edited by ANYONE who appropriately follows Wikipedia policies and will represent the good AND bad things that have been noted about the company -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 20:00, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

commonswiki-20150417-all-titles contains names of deleted files[edit]

So I'm searching for all svg-files on wikipedia. While doing this I found out that commonswiki-20150417-all-titles seems to contain deleted files.

For example http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:34sassinu.svg
(I don't know what sort of image that is. Obviously.)

So my questions are:

1. Is there another list-file like commonswiki-20150417-all-titles that contains all deleted files, so I could do a cross check?

2. Is there an all-titles list-file that doesn't contain the deleted files?

3. Bonus question: Some of those files in commonswiki-20150417-all-titles have been renamed. In line with the two first questions: How to find out the current name?

I only want to download the svg-files, and not to download like 250% overload. Out of the 20 files I tried around half were renamed.

And some were deleted. Only around 5 were actually to find under the name given in the all-titles file.

By now I would have been faster if I just grabbed a whole wikipedia-dump. :/ But then that I really don't want to do . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.102.69.95 (talk) 21:05, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

Can you use Media: for what you want by previewing or saving pages full of Media: links? Media:34sassinu.svg is red since commons:File:34sassinu.svg has been deleted. Media:Afobazole.svg links to http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fa/Fabomotizole.svg since commons:File:Afobazole.svg been renamed to commons:File:Fabomotizole.svg. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:43, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean with: "Can you use Media: for what you want by previewing or saving pages full of Media: links?" - I could construct the File:-pages and parse them for the link to the original file, or if the file was deleted or renamed. Do you mean that? That's what I don't really want to do, as I estiamte that would be like 250 to 300% of additional traffic.
I just wonder: There is surely a way to find out which files were renamed or deleted, or isn't there? Because if there isn't, then I really will go to parse the html-output of the File:-pages where neccessary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.102.69.95 (talk) 23:12, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure whether we mean the same. I meant to save a page with thousands of Media: links like:

...

Then analyze the generated html code of the page to determine the file url's. Or use a web archiver on the saved page to download all files linked from the page. I have used HTTrack like that at other websites but not with this number of files. Maybe there is a better method but I have never examined what is in database dumps. People at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) or mw:Project:Support desk may know more. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:28, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Basically that's what I would do if the dump-files can't be used to generate the correct "upload."... links.
Though I wouldn't need to make a file with thousands links. I can use those links generated/guessed by me directly and then parse the result and the return code.
Best I'll ask at the two links you gave me. TYVM again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.102.69.95 (talk) 02:36, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Scanned Book Cover[edit]

I have a scan of the cover of a book by Carl Jung. I'd like to use it in the article about the book. I've seen somewhere that this is allowable, but I'm not sure where. I do NOT want to become a copyright attorney -- I just want to add an illustration to an article. Lou Sander (talk) 02:08, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Just use the Upload file link at the top left of any page. Choose the option that says This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. Then choose This is the official cover art of a work. The scan should be at a fairly low resolution so that it can't be used to pirate the book cover. Then bippity boppity boo... You're done. Dismas|(talk) 02:27, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
When was the book printed? Is the book cover in public domain? (I realize that some of Jung's books were printed in his later life or after his death and are still copyright.) Robert McClenon (talk) 03:02, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Two questions, both regarding citations[edit]

Hey guys,

I'm working on a couple articles here, but ran into some issues in the citations. My first question is: Many of the online sources I selected have been deleted after being just over a year old, what should I do?

My second question: is there a limited amount of online citations required for an article? I have TONS of newspaper, magazine, and book references - but not a whole lot of Internet sources.

Thanks! Sash~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by SashaRearick (talkcontribs) 03:19, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi @SashaRearick: Great questions. Here are my two answers:
(edit conflict) SashaRearick, it is often possible to find archived versions of content previously posted to the web at archive sites. In particular the so-called "wayback machine" at www.archive.org can be very useful here. But make sure that your source is a reliable one, or don't bother.
An article should have enough citations to allow readers to verify the stated facts. There is no point in having huge numbers of duplicitative citations that support the same facts. There is no specific number required. (There should also be enough independent sources to establish the notability of the subject.) While it is often convenient to use online sources, printed sources are perfectly acceptable, provided they are reliable sources and have been published. A perfectly good article might use no online sources at all, but many printed sources. DES (talk) 03:52, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Edit to Muslim World League[edit]

Greetings

We Represent the Muslim World League Organization and we want to edit our own definition in Wikipedia page Muslim World League, since the Editor posted false information about our organization and we would like to correct them if possible or at least add our point of view to it.

To start with: The most important points are:

1)

According to various sources, the MWL is funded primarily by the Saudi-Arabian government

Gryffindor, Muslim World League

The Truth is that: Muslim World League funded by group of Muslim & Arabic Countries around the world.

2)

Among the original nine members of the League's "Constituent Council" were "important representatives of the Salafi tendency": Said Ramadan, (son-in-law of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hasan al-Banna)

Gryffindor, Muslim World League

And that is totally false because Mr. Said Ramadan was banned from entering Saudi Arabia and he didn't participate in any Muslim World League events, and that lead to a bigger problem that when someone search in google about is the founder of Muslim World LEague it came up the result from Wikipedia that Mr. Said Ramadan is the founder so the Editor false claim lead to a bigger one.

So please we want to correct or add the following to the article Muslim World League

Finding all Talk pages where I wrote a certain phrase[edit]

Is there a way for me to locate all the instances where I wrote a particular phrase on Talk pages? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:55, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

What time period? An AWB user with a full database dump could scan for it. - X201 (talk) 11:40, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
That seems a bit like the classic "use a sledgehammer to swat a mosquito" solution. I wonder if an advanced search could look for pages containing both the phrase and my signature. I know how to do such a search on Google but I'm not sufficiently familiar with WP's internal search engine. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:55, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Its guaranteed to work though, Which is more than I can say for Wikipedia's search, it allegedy does AND searches, but I've never been able to get it to work. Try WP:PUMPTECH, they love this sort of question over there. - X201 (talk) 13:04, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Maybe this is a dumb suggestion but if you know how to do a search on Google already, could you not just add "site:wikipedia.org" to the search? — Bilorv(talk)(c)(e) 13:29, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
@Bilorv - AIUI external search engines such as Google are blocked from Talk pages. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:42, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
@Dodger67: Something like this search ought to find talk pages containing a target phrase and, probably, your signature. The "tilde zero" is there to insist that there are zero additional words between those you are searching for. This doesn't guarantee that the target phrase is in a post by you, and I don't know any way round this. The search results start with five or six irrelevant results with unusual page names; I hope this has been reported to the developers somewhere. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:13, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks John of Reading, the "tilde zero trick" works perfectly! I found the discussion, it's quite a lot older than I thought, it dates back to August 2014. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:47, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Uploading Images[edit]

Hi,

I need to upload an image to the wikipedia page "Nadia Buhannad" that I created. Can you help?

Nadia Buhannad

Ryclal (talk) 11:51, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

  • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
  • If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.--ukexpat (talk) 12:03, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
NB, the article has now been speedily deleted for being too promotional in tone, see WP:SPAM.--ukexpat (talk) 14:47, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

I want to change the logo image associated with the page WH Ireland as the brand mark is not correct. 'Launching' a Wikipedia page?[edit]

Haleema Z Khan (talk)Hello, I've created my first Wikipedia page on Catherine George Ward, a nineteenth century author, but I'm unsure about how to 'launch' it (is that the correct term?). It's currently on my Sandbox but I would like to make it available to everyone- how would I do that? Thanks in advance, Haleema Haleema Z Khan (talk) 15:30, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

I haven't checked the page in question yet, but you should be able to use the move function which can be accessed at the top of the page... I'll leave more in-depth answers to others, as I have to leave for a brief moment... Dustin (talk) 15:41, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
The page looks as if it is ready to be moved into article space except for the hatnote at the top, which should be fixed to Mason or Ward. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:46, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
I would personally remove the hatnote altogether. The article also has some minor issues, mostly in formatting: the "Bibliography" and "See also" sections appear to have been copied from some generic template and should be removed. The sentence "List official websites, organizations named after the subject, and other interesting yet relevant websites. No spam." should also be removed from the External links section.
To move the page, there should be a link on the top-right of the page when you hover over the "More" button (next to "Read", "Edit" etc.) that reads "Move". Click on it and it will lead you to a new page, where you should change the namespace parameter from "User" to "(Article)" and "Haleema Z Khan/sandbox" to "Catherine Mason" or "Catherine George Ward" (whatever you want the title to be).
If you want me to send you a more detailed message about some of the small formatting problems I found in your page, I can. If you don't understand how to move the page yourself and want me to do it for you, reply here and I will. If you have any other problems or queries you can ask here or ask me personally on my talk page. — Bilorv(talk)(c)(e) 16:06, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
I've done some courtesy clean up of the formatting and layout.--ukexpat (talk) 16:52, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Moving sections from one article to another[edit]

After proposing major re-structuring to the article on aesthetics, it has been proposed that a fair amount of its content (several sections) might well be integrated into History of aesthetics before the 20th century and thus almost completely deleted from aesthetics. Now I wondered whether there is an established procedure for such a case?

My idea about how to proceed at the moment would be to comment on the talk page of both pages which version of which section has been moved to which version of the other article. However, I wanted to ask for other solutions before making such re-arrangements. Thanks, AeAnBr (talk) 19:25, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

AeAnBr, See Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and {{Copied}} DES (talk) 22:13, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, DESiegel! The help page is the one I have been searching; even though it's not a case for the suggested template. AeAnBr (talk) 05:46, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Bokujō Monogatari Naming[edit]

The game franchise Bokujō Monogatari has been localized in the west as Harvest Moon by the company Natsume. However recently the localization has been handled by a different company, but the "Harvest Moon" name still belongs to Natsume. Because of this, there are new games called "Harvest Moon" that aren't Bokujō Monogatari games. However, the Wikipedia article for "Harvest Moon" is dealing with the Bokujō Monogatari series which, until recently, was essentially synonymous with it. More information about this is mentioned series' talk page and in this section from the article itself:

Due to Natsume keeping the rights to the Harvest Moon name when Marvelous decided to abruptly refuse to work with them any longer in favour of having their own American division, XSEED Games, taking over North American distribution, the latest title in the series had to change its name to Story of Seasons while Natsume took the opportunity to start making their own "Harvest Moon" games with Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley. This has caused some degree of confusion.

I can't find any other examples of something like this happening, so I am uncertain of the best way to handle renaming/splitting the related articles. Is there any suggested way of handling this, or is the suggestion provided on the talk page (rename the "Harvest Moon (series)" article to "Story of Seasons (series)" and make a new article "Harvest Moon (Natsume series)") the best way of handling this? Thank you. Fench (talk) 22:26, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Brian Peppers[edit]

I tried to create a page for Brian Peppers. It was protected and I was unable. This is a popular and important deceased person who has significant coverage in various publications. I tried to nominate it for deletion review in 2007 and my request was denied. It has been a long time so I am hoping bias here has decreased. How can I create this important article? Pilotbob (talk) 03:35, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

There very little chance that Wikipedia will permit an article on the subject of Brian Peppers to be created. Articles have repeatedly been deleted, per community consensus, [4] and nothing has changed in Wikipedia policy which is likely to change that situation. And no, the article isn't 'important' - internet memes rarely are. AndyTheGrump (talk)
This article was deleted by Jimbo, back when he did more of that sort of thing, and re-deleted by several prominent admins after much discussion -- and apparntly a fair amount of opposition. Pilotbob, I suspect that Andy is correct above. But if you really think that a valid article can be created about a sex offender known mostly for his deformities, you could create Draft:Brian Peppers. There you could show that a well-sourced, neutral article that demonstrates notability and does not violate other Wikipedia policies can be created. If you manage to do that, you could post at WP:DRV and point to the draft as an argument to allow the article. I doubt that it can be done, but you could try. DES (talk) 04:50, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Summer Heights High[edit]

Please can you check the refs on the page - Summer heights High; there is problem with the reference numbers 19 and 20. thanks Steve 4245 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.228.42.83 (talk) 07:48, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Fixed ref 20. A date was given as "May 11 2013", where "11 May 2013" is the expected format. Maproom (talk) 07:55, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
I don't see a problem with 19, but I do with 9-15. The access dates are all the same as the publication dates, all back in 2007. The access date is supposed to eb the (most recent) date that the article editor/drafter visited the reference source and verified that it supports the facts listed in the article. Was that really last done back in 2007? I suspect a misunderstanding of the accessdate parameter here. DES (talk) 12:23, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

I have a photo and don't know what category to put it under[edit]

I have taken a photo of a 'church' from the outside. Do I class this as:

  1. free work,
  2. copyrighted, non-free work, but Fair Use
  3. or Non-Free Content

I'm using the File Upload Wizard and need to put it under a category. Thanks. In Citer (talk) 09:29, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

You're the photographer, you decide. It probably won't be able to be used on Wikipedia if you choose to copyright it so I suggest you head over to commons:Special:UploadWizard and follow the guide. CC BY 3.0 is a good, free license to use. Scarce2 (talk) 09:34, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
@In Citer: The answer may also depend on which country you are in and the age of the building; see Commons:Commons:Freedom of panorama. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:51, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. In Citer (talk) 09:59, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Just to clarify, "copyright" and "use on Wikipedia" are not mutually exclusive. The creator of an image (in the absence of an agreement with someone else to the contrary) owns the copyright to any image they create. Licensing such an image on terms acceptable to Wikipedia does not extinguish the copyright. The CC licenses (like any other license) merely specify the terms on which use by others is permitted.--ukexpat (talk) 12:09, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Exactly. In Citer, if you are uploading your own work to Wikipedia (unless it as a derivitive work subject to someone else's copyright) you should most oftne choose "free work". Free here does not mean uncopyrighted, but rather freely licensed (or in the public domain). Or, if your are going to freely license it, upload to commons as Scarce2 suggested. For information, Kelly is a cousin to my wife, contrary to the information given, Kelly was not born in Bangor, Northern Ireland, she was in fact born in London, both her parents were born in the Republic of Ireland.

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. To remove the banner, one should find the third party reliable sources that discuss the subject and then present that as the content of the article in a neutral tone in a manner that represents the positive and negative views of the subject rather than promotional fluffery such as one that reads as if it is a free duplicate of the subjects website. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:04, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello Hugo. I can't tell which page/article this is, since leaving the above msg is the only thing you have done using the above IP address. Note that most Wikipedia pages are actually articles, or they are supposed to be. An article should have references cited to verify statements made in it, and to demonstrated the notability of the subject, under the WP:GNG. Articles with few or no references are often deleted. See Referencing for Beginners for more information on references and how to add them. DES (talk) 18:50, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Category moves?[edit]

@Faceless Enemy: Category moves have to be discussed first. See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:49, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
This is a typographical error fix, not a "real" move. Faceless Enemy (talk) 00:08, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references missing key[edit]

In the article, List of Attorneys General of West Virginia, all my inline citations are properly formatted and now all of a sudden, without any edits, I now have 8 cite errors appearing in the article. Has a change been made to a template that is causing this issue? Any assistance that could be provided would be of the greatest help! -- West Virginian (talk) 00:54, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

You made extensive additions to the article on 30 May 2015. In displaying the history, the 23 May 2015 version, which is shorter and does not have the text that you added, does not have the cite errors. The 30 May 2015 version does have the cite errors. Did it have the cite errors when you edited it on 30 May, or is that new? If that is new, it is (as you suggest) likely that a template has been changed. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:56, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
In this edit of yours, a number of citations were added, West Virginian. At least one fo them uses {{harvnb}} inside a named ref tag. As I understand it, harvnb doesn't work properly if used that way. i think this is what is causing the errors. DES (talk) 03:35, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
