Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. (For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.) Please read our article titling policy and our guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.

Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:

  • Technical reasons may prevent a move, such as when a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or if the page to be moved is protected from moves. In these circumstances, administrator help is required to move a page, see below: § Requesting technical moves.
  • A title may be subject to dispute, and discussion may be necessary in order to reach consensus, see below: § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. It is not always necessary to use the requested move process in these circumstances: one option is to start an informal discussion at the article's talk page instead.
  • Unregistered users and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users do not have the capability to move pages. They must request moves using this process.

Most move requests are processed by a group of regular contributors who are familiar with Wikipedia naming conventions, non-binding precedents, and page moving procedures. Requests are generally processed after seven days, although backlogs often develop. If there is a clear consensus after this time, or if the requested move is uncontroversial or technical, the request will be closed and acted upon. If not, the closer may choose to re-list the request to allow more time for consensus to develop, or close it as "no consensus". For the processes involved in closing requests, performing moves, and cleaning up after moves, see Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions. For a list of all processed moves, see Special:Log/move.

The Move review process can be used to contest a move. It is designed to evaluate a contested close of a move discussion to determine if the close was reasonable, or whether it was inconsistent with the spirit and intent of Wikipedia common practice, policies, or guidelines.

When not to use this page[edit]

Shortcuts:

Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:

Undiscussed moves[edit]

Shortcut:

Anyone can be bold and move a page without discussing it first and gaining an explicit consensus on the talk page. If you consider such a move to be controversial, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons then you may request a technical move.

Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.

Requesting technical moves[edit]

Shortcut:

The discussion process is used for potentially controversial moves. If any of the following apply to a desired move, treat it as potentially controversial:

  • There is an existing article (not just a redirect) at the target title;
  • There has been any past debate about the best title for the page;
  • Someone could reasonably disagree with the move.

If a desired move is uncontroversial and technical in nature (e.g. spelling), please feel free to move the page yourself. If the page has recently been moved without discussion, you may revert the move and initiate a discussion on its talk page. In either case, if you are unable to complete the move, request it below.

  • To list a technical request, go to the bottom of this section that you are reading right now; edit the subsection Uncontroversial technical requests; insert the following code at the top:
{{subst:RMassist|<!--old page name, without brackets-->|<!--requested name, without brackets-->|reason= <!--reason for move-->}}
This will automatically insert a bullet and include your signature. Please do not edit the article's talk page.
  • If you object to a proposal listed in the uncontroversial technical requests section, please move it to the Contested technical requests section.

  • Alternatively, if the only obstacle to an uncontroversial move is another page in the way, you can ask for the deletion of the other page. This may apply, for example, if the other page is currently a redirect to the article to be moved, a redirect with no incoming links, or an unnecessary disambiguation page with a minor edit history. To request the other page be deleted, add the following code to the top of the page that is in the way:
{{db-move|<!--page to be moved here-->|<!--reason for move-->}}
This will list the undesired page for deletion under criterion for speedy deletion G6. If the page is a redirect, place the code above the redirection. For a list of articles being considered for uncontroversial speedy deletion, see Category:Candidates for uncontroversial speedy deletion.

Uncontroversial technical requests[edit]

  • Nelly → Nelly (rapper) (move (@subpage)) – Was previously moved by user:Ohconfucius with the reason: "too many Nellies for him to have a monopoly of the namespace" – my reason while trying to move is "not of overriding importance" (looking at other meanings like the female given name). After that the article about the female given name as main importance – or at least the Nelly (disambiguation) page should be moved to the Nelly entry. Manual moving is not possible because of existing redirect. – Hartwin Wolf (talk) 19:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
The main meaning is the given name, and that is not a matter of my or someone else's opinion – refer to google:
"nelly name -wikipedia" vs. "nelly rapper -wikipedia" → ratio 12.5M:2M = 6.25:1 — or since when is Wikipedia renamed to "Rapper-Advertipedia"? --Hartwin Wolf (talk) 12:45, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
  • Draft:The Tolkien Society → The Tolkien Society (move (@subpage)) – There is currently a redirect that prevents accepting a stand-alone article that is otherwise ready to be moved into mainspace. – Robert McClenon (talk) 19:01, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
    • Pictogram voting comment.svg comment this needs to be histmerged, the target contians an old version of the article. -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 04:46, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
      • I don't think we should be moving drafts into mainspace anyway. Leave that to the AFC process. Jenks24 (talk) 06:48, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Contested technical requests[edit]

Requests to revert undiscussed moves[edit]

Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves[edit]

Shortcut:

Use this process if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested. For technical move requests (e.g. spelling and capitalization fixes), see Requesting technical moves.

Do not put more than one open move request on the same article talk page, because this is not supported by the bot that handles updates to this page. Multiple closed move requests may be on the same page, but each should have a unique section heading.

Requesting a single page move[edit]

(To propose moving more than one page—for example, moving a disambiguation page in order to move another page to that title—see "Requesting multiple page moves" below.)

To request a single page move, edit at the bottom of the talk page of the article you want moved, using this format:

{{subst:Requested move|NewName|reason=Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please present Google Books or Google News Archive results before providing other web results. Do not sign this.}}

Replace NewName with the requested new name of the page (or with a question mark, if you want more than one possible new name to be considered). Leave the Subject/headline blank, as the template automatically creates the heading "Requested move 05 November 2015". Do not sign a request with ~~~~ as the template does this automatically. The template must be substituted.

Use the code |talk=yes to add separate locations for survey and discussion.

Note: Unlike certain other request processes on Wikipedia, nominations need not be neutral. Strive to make your point as best you can; use evidence (such as Ngrams and pageview statistics) and make reference to applicable policies and guidelines, especially our article titling policy and the guideline on disambiguation and primary topic. After the nomination has been made, nominators may nevertheless add a separate bullet point to support their nomination, but should add "as nominator" (for example,  * '''Rename, as nominator''': ...). Most nominators, however, simply allow the nomination itself to indicate what their opinion is. Nominators may also participate in the discussion along with everyone else, and often should.

RMCD bot notifies any Wikiproject listed on the talk page of the article to be moved to invite project members to participate in the RM discussion. Requesters should feel free to notify any other Wikiproject or Noticeboard that might be interested in the move request.

Requesting multiple page moves[edit]

A single template may be used to request multiple related moves. On one of the talk pages of the affected articles, create a request and format it as below. A sample request for three page moves is shown here (for two page moves, omit the lines for current3 and new3). For four page moves, add lines for current4 and new4, and so on. There is no technical limit on the number of multiple move requests, but before requesting very large multi-moves, consider whether a naming convention should be changed first. Discuss that change on the talk page for the naming convention, e.g., Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (sportspeople).

{{subst:requested move
| new1 = New title for page 1 with the talk page hosting this discussion
| current2 = Current title of page 2
| new2 = New title for page 2
| current3 = Current title of page 3
| new3 = New title for page 3
| reason = Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please default to Google Books or Google News Archive before providing any web results. Do not sign this.}}

For example, to propose moving the articles Wikipedia and Wiki, put this template on Talk:Wikipedia, and replace current2 with Wiki. The discussion for all affected articles is held on the talk page of the article at page 1 (Talk:Wikipedia). Do not sign a request with ~~~~ as the template does this automatically. Do not skip pairs of numbers.

RMCD bot automatically places a notice section on the talk page of the additional pages that are included in your request, advising that the move discussion is in progress, where it is, and that all discussion for all pages included in the request should take place at that one location.

Closing instructions[edit]

Any uninvolved editor in good standing may close a move request, and more closers of move requests are needed, but there are certain procedures that need to be followed. Please read our closing instructions for information on how to close a move request.

Relisting[edit]

Relisting a discussion moves the request out of the backlog up to the current day in order to encourage further input. The decision to relist a discussion is best left to uninvolved experienced editors upon considering, but declining, to close the discussion. Preferably, a reason for the relist will be given. When a relisted discussion reaches a resolution, it may be closed at any time according to the closing instructions.

To relist a move request discussion, simply type <small>'''Relisted'''. ~~~~</small> after the initial request. This can also be done by using {{subst:Relisting}}, which signs the relisting automatically. The RMCD bot uses the new timestamp to relist the entry on this page.

If discussion has become stale, or it seems that discussion would benefit from more input of editors versed in the subject area, consider more widely publicizing the discussion. One option is to notify relevant WikiProjects of the discussion using the template {{RM notification}}. Applicable WikiProjects can often be determined by means of the banners placed at the top of the talk page hosting the move request.

  • (Discuss)Constance of PeñafielConstance Manuel – Article should be moved back to Constance Manuel, now a redirect page. Name in sources is Constance Manuel. Search in Googlebooks for Constanza de Peñafiel has 1,500 hits vs. 35,500 for Constanza Manuel. English wiki is the only one using Constance of Peñafiel. In most wikis it is Constance Manuel or Constance of Castile. --Maragm (talk) 13:12, 28 October 2015 (UTC) --Relisted. George Ho (talk) 07:45, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)Min Yongwhan → ? – Recently moved by Idh0854 (talk · contribs) from Min Yeong-hwan to Min Yongwhan. The new name is obviously wrong as it should be "hwan", not "whan". The standard for articles about Korean people seems to be to have a hyphen between the second and the third syllable, so I suggest that we restore the hypen. The question on whether the "e" should be restored is more subjective. Korean personal names tend to be transcribed to Roman letters in numerous different ways and both versions look valid. Maybe it's best to just undo the previous page move. Stefan2 (talk) 15:50, 28 October 2015 (UTC) --Relisted. George Ho (talk) 07:44, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

  • (Discuss)Serbian nobility in the Middle AgesSerbian nobility – The current situation is messed up because I tried but failed to make necessary moves. There are 121 new or old inbound links to "Serbian nobility" that used to go to the page now at "Serbian nobility in the Middle Ages" and again do now by a redirect to it. The disambiguation page Serbian nobility (disambiguation) page lists several perhaps-planned pages but is not needed. The only Serbian nobility page is "Serbian nobility in the Middle Ages", which should be moved to "Serbian nobility". If and when there is a well-developed section there on "Serbian nobility in the early Modern ages" or whatever, then such sections can be split off. This move request is to restore the one Serbian nobility list to the simplest possible title. --doncram 19:56, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)NellyNelly (rapper) – Was previously moved by user:Ohconfucius with the reason: "too many Nellies for him to have a monopoly of the namespace" – my reason while trying to move is "not of overriding importance" (looking at other meanings like the female given name). After that the article about the female given name as main importance – or at least the Nelly (disambiguation) page should be moved to the Nelly entry. Manual moving is not possible because of existing redirect. – Hartwin Wolf (talk) 19:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)Nikhil Chandwani (Author)Nikhil Chandwani – Original article title was salted due to multiple re-creations. The topic is likely only borderline-notable and needs more work, but has received some additional coverage in 2014 and 2015. With those changes, and recent cleanup of self-promotional puffery, the new article could probably be kept as short stub (or at least given a new AfD to evaluate the new situation, the last AfD was in 2011). GermanJoe (talk) 16:54, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)Travel trailerCaravan – I've never heard anyone refer to a caravan as a travel trailer. Maybe that term is used sparingly in the US and Canada (and that's a strong maybe), but in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, they are always referred to as caravans. Unreal7 (talk) 16:13, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)Live! with Kelly and MichaelLive (talk show) – :Live has had many different hosts. Regis Philbin hosted the show for almost 30 years. Kathie Lee hosted for 15 years. Michael Strahan has only been around for 3 years. It doesn't make sense to use the name that has only been used for a relatively very short period of time. Since this article reflects the entire overview of the series and all of the different hosts that the show has had, it makes more sense to use a neutral title. • (Discuss)ISIL territorial claims → ? – ISIL territorial claims is a very clunky name, and is not a natural title for an article that is essentially a list of ISIL affiliates outside of Iraq & Syria. Also, technically ISIL has a territorial claim on all Muslim lands, and even the whole world. I propose either ISIL International Branches or ISIL International Affiliates Gazkthul (talk) 01:51, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)BullycideBullying and suicide – page was uncontroversially moved in November 2014; move was reverted in July 2015 for reasons I find unclear. I think the proposed move target is better in compliance with our policy on article titles, especially WP:PRECISION. The -cide terminology is inherently ambiguous as to whether the subject of the article is suicide by bullied persons or homicide of a bully. "Bullycide" is also a neologism to which WP:COMMONNAME applies, though the alternative proposed "X and Y" format naming is rather too apples and oranges to readily, quantitatively, compare. • (Discuss)OSOS (disambiguation) – Times have changed. With computing dominating our lives almost every reference to the generic term "OS means... well, remember this post from six years ago?

    I am not sure but shouldn't OS point directly to the Operating Systems page, with a link to this page, instead of here? all the other articles seem a bit obscure to me.

  • (Discuss)AoösVjosë – Most common names based on Google books results: Overall Vjosë is more commonly used in reference to the River as the third and fourth results include hits for the Aoos national park, meaning the hits for 'Aoos' are exaggerated by this. • (Discuss)Walking on the Milkyway → ? – There's a space in "Milky Way" on the cover, so the page title seems to be wrong. There is currently a different article called Walking on the Milky Way, preventing this page from being moved there. I guess that both articles need some kind of disambiguation in the page titles. Stefan2 (talk) 23:23, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)PhoneGapApache Cordova – PhoneGap is the proprietary version of open source Apache Cordova. PhoneGap, and many other tools and frameworks are based on Apache Cordova, not vice versa. Currently, "Apache Cordova" redirects to this PhoneGap page, but it should be the other way around. There are several requests for the rename in the "Rename" section of this Talk page, so it isn't very controversial. Jonasmkr (talk) 20:12, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)Michael Bruce CurryMichael Curry (bishop)WP:COMMONNAME & WP:BISHOP, Without having done a complete and thorough survey is seems that a google search yields as many references to "Michael Curry" as there are to "Michael Bruce Curry", so I don't think I agree that Michael Bruce Curry is what he is COMMONLY known as. • (Discuss)Kingdom of GermanyKingdom of the East Franks – As the original mediaeval Empire was based on the Kingdom of the East Franks, it never made any sense that there would be other kingdoms inside it. • (Discuss)Güveç (cooking)Güveç – Güveç primarily refers to the bakeware and the dishes cooked in it in general. The dish known as güveç/đuveč is a variety of it and a secondary meaning of the term güveç. (Edit: that this article is the primary topic is self-evident to all those in the know, but the uninitiated can take a look at https://www.google.com/#q=güveç&tbm=bks and see that almost every single one of the 3.320 results refer to the meaning in this article.) • (Discuss)Maine dialectMaine accent – The Atlas of North American English identifies (at least the modern-day) Maine variety as a subset of the Northern/Eastern New England dialect, as much of its phonology and vocabulary show: "Northeastern New England [NENE] is the r-less area with the low back merger, a sizeable area centered about Boston and extending into New Hampshire and Maine" (p. 225). The second paragraph of [21] also verifies this. Also, "Maine accent" is by far the more common name anyway, as a quick Google Scholar search can show. Down East Maine accent also appears to be somewhat common (and maybe more specific), though still not as common as "Maine accent." Wolfdog (talk) 13:54, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

  • (Discuss)ABC NewsABC News (United States) – The current title is unfair. • (Discuss)JIRAJira (software) – Per MOS:TM / MOS:ALLCAPS ("avoid: TIME, KISS, ASUS"): Lots of organizations and brand names like to use all-caps name styling to try to make themselves stand out from the crowd and appear more important. It's an annoying practice that Wikipedia should generally not follow. Please see prior comments on Talk page. This is not an acronym – just purely promotional styling. —BarrelProof (talk) 14:41, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)John V, Duke of BrittanyJohn IV, Duke of Brittany – Modern historiographical convention names these three individuals as John of Montfort; John IV, Duke of Brittany; and John V, Duke of Brittany. The current convention of numbering John of Montfort is a propaganda relic in specifically British history relating to the War of the Breton Succession. John of Montfort was never recognised as duke by the King of France, his overlord, and the title successfully was held by Charles, Duke of Brittany until his defeat and death in 1364, at which point John's son, John IV finally secured recognition from both the king of France and the king of England. Retaining the English numbering here is a Wikipedia anomaly and one that has divided and confused foreign language articles based on this topic. Significantly, though, both the French- and the Breton-language articles on this topic are clear in their numbering. In other words, the titling of these articles is primarily a legacy of the 1911 encyclopaedia that originally spawned them. • (Discuss)Alexander BowmanAlexander Bowman (Irish politician) – For disambiguation. Per the hatnote in this article and the listing at Bowman (surname), we seem to have at least four articles on Wikipedia about notable people named Alexander Bowman or Alex Bowman, and this one (with a page view frequency of only about 3 views per day in the last 90 days) does not seem exceptionally more notable than the others. —BarrelProof (talk) 05:33, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

  • (Discuss)Master of the HorseMaster of the horse – This is not about a specific office called Master of the Horse, which would be capitalised, but a generic category of offices in various different countries. There is therefore no need to capitalise it as it is not a proper name. Initial move disputed. Incidentally, despite the claim when it was moved back to the capitalised form, the "horse" in the title does not generally refer to the cavalry but to an archaic singular usage of horses, as this official was most commonly head of the royal stables. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:33, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

  • (Discuss)Infante Peter, Count of AlburquerquePeter of Aragon, Count of Alburquerque – Article should be moved back to Peter of Aragon, Count of Alburquerque, now a redirect page. Titles, with few exceptions, should not be used as the first part of a name since this leads to confusión and individuals are not as easy to find. Also, only in English wiki is the title used for this individual before his name. --Maragm (talk) 14:41, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
  • (Discuss)Celtic Reconstructionist PaganismCeltic reconstructionist paganism – Per MOS:DOCTCAPS; see also Polytheistic reconstructionism (not capitalized). These are common nouns, not proper names. The article even explicitly states that Celtic reconstructionism "is an umbrella term". The overcapitalization (not just of this term) needs also to be corrected in the article text. The fact that adherents to CR like to capitalize it as a self-identification doesn't mean that we should capitalize it encyclopedically; the entire point of MOS:DOCTCAPS is that adherents to any school of thought habitually tend to capitalize it when a general-audience publication would not. This sort of overcapitalization is especially the case, in this context, with Isaac Bonewits, an advocate of a particular brand of neo-druidry and of neopaganism generally, who is being over-cited in these articles; he capitalizes virtually everything to do with spirituality, as do many other specialized and non-neutral sources that represent neopagan advocacy. They may be reliable sources on what neopagans of various sorts believe spiritually, but they are not reliable sources on how to properly use English to encyclopedically write about them.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  18:05, 20 October 2015 (UTC) Relisted. • (Discuss)Dehesa (pastoral management)Montado – Portuguese term montado seems to be somewhat more common in English literature (see below) than Spanish dehesa. • (Discuss)Coexist (album)Coexist – The other two articles on the disambiguation page only have "coexist" in part of their titles. It is unlikely that readers searching for just "coexist" would be looking for these two articles. Also, this article has higher page views than the other two articles on the disambiguation page, making it the primary topic for "coexist". sst 02:32, 17 October 2015 (UTC)--Relisted. • (Discuss)Philippine Constitutional Convention election, 19701971 Philippine Constitutional Convention – Ideally there would be two articles, one about the election and one about the convention itself, but we do not live in an ideal world. There is only one article, this one, and it contains limited information related to the election itself. Most of the article involves the convention (including information that I added today :) ) or is a list of the delegates -- winners of the election -- which is just as applicable to a Convention article. An election article should have information about the non-winning candidates, deadlines and vote process, campaign tactics and issues, controversies, etc. -- in other words more than a list of delegates to the convention. Therefore I propose that this article be moved to the "Philippine Constitutional Convention, 1970" with a subsection specifically about the election with redirects pointing to that subsection, effectively combining the two topics (election and convention) into one article. The convention itself is more significant than the election since it was in the midst of the convention that martial law was declared and since the constitution that came out of the convention and the ratification process solidified and legitimatized Marcos's rule. When and if the election subsection has grown big enough then it can be spun off as a separate article. The page is protected and so I cannot WP:Be Bold and do the move and redirect myself. • (Discuss)Liu Yan (Bosheng)Liu Bosheng – The point of disambiguation is to not use confusing or hard-to-understand disambiguators, as the current title did. The history book Book of Later Han almost entirely uses his courtesy name "Bosheng" to refer him. If one insists on using his real given name, there's a problem with the character being able to be romanized as either "Yin" or "Yan" (see the section above on this talk page). Even if we disregard this problem, it's hard to find a really good disambiguator. Therefore I think Liu Bosheng is probably the best solution per WP:NATURAL.
