BBC White Paper: Government Unfreezes License Fee and Scraps BBC Trust

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

U.K. TV bizzers breathed a sigh of relief on Thursday when the government unveiled its long-awaited white paper for the BBC, which quashed many of the speculated fears concerning the future of the country’s main public-owned broadcaster.

While concerns surrounding license fee commitment and encroaching independence were allayed, the paper did reveal plans for a “major overhaul” of how the Beeb is run.

John Whittingdale, the government minister in charge of broadcasting, revealed that the new BBC Royal Charter would remain committed to the org’s independence and would end the seven-year license fee freeze, which was frozen in 2010 by the then newly-elected coalition government.

The white paper confirmed the license fee, which is currently set at £145.50 ($210.06) per year, will run for another 11 years and rise in line with inflation from 2017 to 2022, quashing speculation that it would be “top sliced” and shared with some of its commercial rivals. »

‘Money Monster’ Cannes Review: George Clooney Hostage Drama Fails to Captivate

1 hour ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

So many things about “Money Monster” sounded tempting as mainstream grownup entertainment: the timeliness of a financial crisis story merged with a hostage drama; charismatic leads (George Clooney and Julia Roberts) bouncing off each other; and the return of Jodie Foster to the director’s chair. What transpires, though, is a bewilderingly facile and preposterously plotted misfire that offers few pleasures as either a star-driven thriller or a big-screen indictment of the forces that devastated global bank accounts, an issue actively driving this year’s election. Clooney’s character Lee Gates, the louder-than-life, know-it-all host of the titular financial news show, »

Cannes Film Review: ‘Money Monster’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When you break apart the essential elements of “Money Monster,” Jodie Foster’s taut yet sporadically odd hostage drama, few of them seem to completely work. As an indictment of Wall Street chicanery, it’s largely toothless; as a pure thriller, it only quickens the pulse once or twice; as a conspiracy saga, its central mystery falls flat.

Yet somehow the film hangs together surprisingly well, thanks to on-point performances from George Clooney and Julia Roberts, a sprinkle of obtuse humor and Foster’s streamlined direction, which takes style notes from the likes of “Dog Day Afternoon” and “Inside Man” in the service of a far more lightweight confection. It may not linger long in the memory after credits roll, and what multiplex audiences make of the film is anyone’s guess, but in a landscape short on no-frills grown-up entertainment, it’s worth the modest time investment.

Cannes Film Review: ‘Staying Vertical’

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Leo (Damien Bonnard), the central character in “Staying Vertical,” is a tall, curly-haired drifter with a hawk-nosed reptilian stare — he looks like a doleful French version of Kramer from “Seinfeld.” Early on, he hooks up with Marie (India Hair), a single mother who is working as a shepherd, and before it’s clear that they’re even going to be a couple, the two have collaborated on having a baby. Actually, they’re not a couple: Marie splits with no explanation, leaving the infant for Leo to care for. Has there ever been a less equipped father in the history of movies? Leo doesn’t have a job — he’s writing a screenplay, or says that he is — and he tends to leave the baby alone in cars, and has a way of cradling him like a foreign object; he seems no more connected to the kid than if it were a baby mongoose. »

Cannes Film Review: ‘In Bed With Victoria’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In what is pretty much the closest thing French cinema will produce to a Hollywood-style romantic comedy this year, Justine Triet’s “In Bed With Victoria” offers both the candor and the schmaltz of “Trainwreck.” Innovative to the extent that it recognizes the sexual allure, as well as the desires, of its leading lady (played by Virginie Efira), without turning her into an object of lust, the commercially minded film centers on a Paris lawyer who’s as shrewd as they come in a courtroom, but something of a disaster in her private affairs. The pic should get a boost in France, if not so much abroad, from the fact it kicks off Cannes Critics’ Week.

Efira, a blonde actress with a baby-doll face and wolf-whistle curves (but nary a trace of Amy Schumer’s physical comedy instincts, alas), Victoria struggles with the responsibilities of single-motherhood, pawning off her two young daughters, »
