The Buzz: 2016 is shaping up to be quite memorable for Tom Hanks; he withstood A Hologram for the King's shaky reviews and kept the focus on Inferno, his upcoming return to the sport coats of Robert Langdon, as well as his bonafide Oscar contending portrayal of Chesley Sullenberger for director Clint Eastwood. A rapturous response from the Venice Film Festival is an indication that the very American story could play well worldwide.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Horror | Mystery | Thriller

The Buzz: Screen Gems has established itself as the Sony division that specializes in, among other things, the guilty pleasure revenge thriller. Jaz Sinclair gets a big-screen introduction as the nefarious entity whom we imagine will be dispatched by a righteous Regina Hall. This is our kind of date movie.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Horror | Thriller

A mother and her young son release unimaginable horrors from the attic of their rural dream home.

The Buzz: Kate Beckinsale stars in a haunted house thriller that feels familiar in many ways -- there's a marriage in trouble, a questionable decision to move into a dilapidated country estate, a ghost of a young girl ... Looks like it could be fun to watch Kate in paranormal architect mode as she uses the home's blueprints to unlock its mysteries, but it will be a miracle if the movie delivers at the box office since it's such a late arrival to the calendar. Disappointments is one of three movies being distributed by Relativity Media that have been subjected to the studio's executive shuffle and storied financial issues that have resulted in a temporarily unstable release plan.

Certificate PG   -   Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family

A daring parrot recounts how Robinson Crusoe came to be stranded on a tropical island.

The Buzz: Disney and Universal pretty much own the animation game but that doesn't stop other studios from tossing a title or two into the mix to see how they perform. Most of the movies fail spectacularly; for every Nut Job there are a dozen bombs. Lionsgate, the studio behind this reimagining of Robinson Crusoe's adventures, has one of the worst track records of all the contenders looking to make inroads into the animated movie market, and there's little chance they will a reversal of fortune here.

Certificate R   -   Documentary

Metascore: 73/100 (8 reviews)
The story behind literary persona JT LeRoy, the fictional writer created by American author Laura Albert.
Director:

The Buzz: In the late 1990s, JT LeRoy, a 20-year-old former runaway, impressed critics with his autobiographical novel about a boy who follows in his mother's footsteps by becoming a prostitute. Hailed for his authentic, streetwise literary voice, LeRoy soon had legions of fans who flocked to his public appearances. As this documentary reveals, LeRoy never existed. He was the nom de plume of an older woman who went to great lengths to conceal her identity. Was it literary fraud or just a pseudonym? This film plays like a thriller and will leave you questioning the nature of identity and why we care so much about "authenticity" in works of fiction. - Sara

The Buzz: Messy, complicated, and sometimes uncomfortable family relationships are certainly nothing new. But this intriguing drama, which premiered to great acclaim at Sundance this past winter, seems to find new nooks and crannies to fill with both equal measures of gloom and laughter. TV veteran Jesse Plemons stars as David, a heavy-with-baggage son who moves home to tend to his terminally mother (Molly Shannon) and come to terms with his life. Critical responses for both acting performances have been notable, but the strongest buzz centers around 14-year-old J.J. Totah's brief but catching on-screen turns as the highly theatrical younger brother of one of David's friends. - Bret

Certificate R   -   Adventure

Metascore: 64/100 (4 reviews)
Brandon is a 15 year old whose dream is a pair of fresh Air Jordans. Soon after he gets his hands on them, they're stolen by a local hood, causing Brandon and his two friends go on a dangerous mission through Oakland to retrieve them.

The Buzz: At times, Justin Tipping's feature debut, which is set across the water from San Francisco in the East Bay, in environments that were last seen in Fruitvale Station, though Tipping and co-writer Joshua Beirne-Golden take an approach here that finds their narrative often shifting into a highly stylized fantasy world. Cast note: Christopher Jordan Wallace, the son of The Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans, co-stars.

Metascore: 86/100 (8 reviews)
Exposing her role behind the camera, Kirsten Johnson reaches into the vast trove of footage she has shot over decades around the world. What emerges is a visually bold memoir and a revelatory interrogation of the power of the camera.

The Buzz: Politically focused cinematographer Kirsten Johnson turns the camera inward for a praised documentary that exists to involve its audience, and I want to be a part of this crowd. - Arno
