Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

This version of Wikipedia is written in English (see Main Page#Wikipedia languages). With this being said, this page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be nominated for deletion.

Contents

Standard procedures[edit]

If you are here for the first time and have an article in a foreign language or a poorly translated article that you wish to list here to forestall possible deletion, you should start by finding the most appropriate template from among the ones listed at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation and add it to the article page, save the page, and then follow the instructions in the banner on how to list the article here. You might need to click '[show]' to see all the instructions.

If you want to ask for a translation into English of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, go to Wikipedia:Translation.

Listing a page here

Most pages get listed here by subst'ing a {{Duflu}} or {{Needtrans}} template, following the instructions given at any one of several translation-related templates that were just added onto the article page. Many (but not all) templates found at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation request adding the corresponding article here. See section Transition template usage below for details of the templates available for use on the main article page.

Other ways to find articles for inclusion on this page are:

Tagging

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. You can leave a message on the contributing user's talk-page in their own language, using the templates from WP:PNT/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.

Replacement and restoration

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

In addition, you may leave a message on the user's talk-page as indicated above.

Notification

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy, Ambassador, or Wikipedia:Local embassy member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as Xerox or What Language Is This? to find out. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Deletion

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be nominated for deletion. (See also Guide to deletion.)

Articles that are not in English are still subject to all other forms of speedy deletion should they meet the criteria, and can be nominated for deletion by prod or afd should an editor feel they warrant deletion for a reason other than the language it is in, an article not being in English is not itself a criterion for deletion until the two week period has passed. Also, foreign-language articles are still subject to blp prod.

After translation

When a page listed here has been translated, its entry should be removed (or moved to section Cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

There are also procedures to follow at the Talk page of the article itself; see template {{translated page}} and Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate.

Translation template usage[edit]

Various templates are available to tag the article page needing translator attention, and one template is available for use here at WP:PNT.

The following templates are available to tag articles with translation issues in preparation for listing the article at WP:PNT:

  • {{notenglish}} - "a passage needs to be translated from Language into English"
  • {{cleanup-translation}} - "contains translated text and needs attention..."
  • {{hidden translation}} - "an earlier translated version may have introduced errors of fact..."
  • {{rough translation}} - "may have been generated by a computer or by a translator without dual proficiency"

The following templates are available for use at WP:PNT to add an entry linking to the article having the translation issue:

These templates, and other templates relating to translation issues outside the scope of WP:PNT can be found at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation.

Templates for article pages

One of the following templates should be used at the top of the article page:

Not English

Template {{not English}} (alias: {{notenglish}}) is available for a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

1. Use the notice {{notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question.
2. Add a mention on this page.
2.1. If you know what language was used, add:
{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~
replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language.
2.2. If you cannot identify the language used, add:
{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~
3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest submitting it to a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (see available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}.
Bilingual versions of this template have been created for Norwegian, Spanish, Polish, and French. See the note on these at {{uw-notenglish}}.

Not English section

If there is just a section that needs translation:

1. Use the notice {{Not English|NameOfLanguage|section}}, with the word "section" as a second unnamed parameter at the beginning of the non-English content.
2. Add a mention on this page, as above.
3. You may wish to place a note on the talk pages of contributors of non-English material, saying that English Wikipedia is meant for English-language content, inviting them to translate it, and, if appropriate, suggesting the location of the Wikipedia edition for the language in question should they wish to post content in that language.

Cleanup translation

Template {{cleanup translation}} (alias: {{cleanup-translation}}) is available if the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:

1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}.
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section.

Hidden translation

Template {{Hidden translation}} is available if the article was translated at an earlier point and contained factual errors, while subsequent edits fixed up the English without fixing the errors of fact. The article now looks good and not "machine-translated" anymore, but the original errors of fact are still there, papered over with a facade of good English.

1. Use the notice {{Hidden translation}}, for example, {{Hidden translation|lang-name|version-nbr}}
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section, using the provided {{Duflu}} invocation.

Rough translation

Template {{rough translation}} is available if the article has been translated, but it looks to be either a machine translation or by someone who doesn't have a good command of the target language, and needs attention from a translator; more than just copyediting is required.

1. Use the notice {{rough translation}}, for example, {{rough translation|German|Deutsch}}.
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section.

Templates for use here

Once you have tagged the article page with one of the templates above, the banner that appears will provide instructions on using a template to add an entry to the translation cleanup section.

One of the two templates {{Duflu}} and {{Needtrans}} should be used at the bottom of the translation cleanup section:

Duflu

Template {{Duflu}} is available for use in the translation cleanup section.

Follow instructions at the expanded banner generated by {{Rough translation}} or {{Cleanup translation}} to subst template {{Duflu}} onto the page at the bottom of the cleanup section. Sample invocations:

{{subst:Duflu |pg=Article name |Language=unknown |Comments= }} ~~~~

you can use the optional orig= param to add a link to the original article see {{Duflu}} for usage details.

{{subst:Duflu |pg=Nuclear submarine |Language=French |orig=:fr:Sous-marin nucléaire |Comments= }}~~~~

Needtrans

Template {{Needtrans}} is available for use in the translation cleanup section.

Follow instructions at the expanded banner generated by {{tlx|Not English]] to subst template {{Needtrans}} onto the page at the bottom of the cleanup section. Sample invocations:

{{subst:Needtrans |pg=Wilhelm II, German Emperor |Language=German |Comments= }} ~~~~

Please consider also placing

{{subst:uw-notenglish |1=Template:not English}} ~~~~

on the talk page of the author.

This is about a Lebanese medievalist. Mostly a list of works, need to look up notability criteria. Elinruby (talk) 00:03, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
WP:NACADEMIC would seem to be the standard. She might qualify based on "highly-cited", need to look. If she meets the others article does not say so. This doesn't need too much really; I'll fix it if it qualifies but I don't want to spend time on it if it doesn't. Elinruby (talk) 23:06, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
No, it is just a list of her publications. Translated the lede, after that, it is just a list of her publications so says nothing about this person at all (well, OK, she was born on 1 November 1969, but that's not referenced.) We don't have Lebanese mediaevalist, Lebanese mediaevealism or more modern spelling Lebanese medievalist etc, although we have Category:Lebanese medievalists. (Is she a mediaevalist from Lebanon or her subject is about Lebanon? Who knows? The article certainly doesn't tell us.) I think this is a straight WP:RESUME case. I have had things published in learned journals (and mass-market publications too), and quite rightly I am not notable just for that. From the sources, it looks like she translates some Latin, but the article doesn't say so beyond the list of publications and journal articles. Whoop de do, there are plenty of translators out there, that is not in itself notable. Si Trew (talk) 10:03, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
I have BLP-prodded this. Mentioning Université St. Joseph is not enough. Lectonar (talk) 09:53, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

And not a brilliant translation. I will do the basics, but the French Infobox build|nom=Biographie pulls in the biography with some magic, the French yet again have decided to have templates that rather than just list the facts have to bring it in from elswehere, so that is why id doesn't show up in EN:WP, I have to hunt now for where the data for the infobox actually is, because it ain't in the article. Docs for that template don't mention this magic parameter "build". Sheesh. Si Trew (talk) 10:40, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Have discovered that an acquaintance speaks fluent Portugese and will try to enlist her help. Many language strangenesses remain, and the article does not cover at all what she had to say about the charges against her, and is watched by editors who may have political beliefs that come into play, maybe. I took the article to NPOV already. There was consensus about the NPOV problem and a couple of editors were informally told that they probably should refrain from editing on the topic. One uninvolved editor did do a pass for English but he speaks Portugese even less than Ido, which is not much at all. This makes it difficult to add the needed new content, but perhaps my friend can help. She seemed open to helping with Portugese when I asked but we have not gone into the specifics. Also note -- Brazil seems to have a judiciary that is modeled on the French but does not exactly correspond to it, so caution is requires with titles like prosecutor or judge, which may not mean the same thing as in US/UKcontexts. I have moved this from the top part of the page down to here. It is not a "major part" that is written in Greek, but a sample of the subject's published works. The titles are in Greek followed by English translations. But the formatting needs a cleanup, along with confirmation that the translationas are correct. So I will leave it here. Thoracic endometriosis[edit]

This was originally posted in Spanish. I started a translation, and then another editor finished the job, but also removed the sources, which are in Spanish. While restoring the sources (WP:NONENG), I discovered a few missing sentences, so I translated and inserted those, but I also noticed pieces of the translation that needed fixing. I took care of the ones I noticed, but I haven't done a full scan of the article. It will be helpful, of course, if someone with some knowledge of medical terminology has a look through it. Two other editors (mostly) have worked on this, doing what appears to be copy-editing of that portion of the Google translate that is intelligible, and dropping the rest. I've started in on doing some translation, including restoring some of the dropped sentences with new translations, and also putting some of the dropped sentences back into the article, this time in the original German since the garbled English was useless and immune to copyediting, so they can be translated later. They are all tagged {{not English-inline}} and can be easily found. There were also a great number of missing wikilinks as well as some incorrect ones. I also resolved some red-links and added some {{ill}} links where de has the link but we don't. This article is well worth having, and I'd like some additional help here from translators. France in the 1920s[edit]

The initial language of this article was French. It seems to have been machine translated from fr:Années folles en France. Opencooper (talk) 21:22, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

A very BAD machine translation. I have put some heroic effort into this, which was somewhat interesting from a puzzle solving POV. I am currently on strike after realizing that the "trade shows" and "fairs" that were puzzling me were in fact literary salons. Yes. Trade show is sometimes translated as a salon, into French, but Gertrude Stein (it was realizing that we were talking about Gertrude Stein that was the key) definitely didn't stage trade shows. It's now a bad and incomplete article that still has some language issues, but much better than it was. I intend to come back to it (how could you overlook Art Deco) but feel free to pitchin if you like Elinruby (talk) 04:28, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

doh the french title is right there! Anyway, thanks for the ping. I thought about it and agreed. Elinruby (talk) 14:22, 17 December 2016 (UTC)]
  • Since there was consensus on the talk page (3 editors) and no opposition I have moved this page to [[[Années folles]]. The French article was linking to... "Golden 20s" I think it was, which turns out to be what the period was called in Germany. There seem to be a few parallels but that article mentions Paris only in passing. So. I think I have fixed the wikidata item, but I'd never done this before so someone might want to look at that. I am slowly working my way back to this ugly problem. We do need to mention Art Deco, which is completely absent from the article right now. It has its own quite detailed and authoritative-looking page, so we don't need to be exhaustive, but a summary really needs to be included here, and the stuff about Hemingway and the many art movements that blossomed in this period as well. Also Dada has its own page but should also be mentioned and linked to. I could use some help if anyone is so moved. There is also a problem with a related page, School of Paris, which was a group active in Paris at the time, but also was the name of a medieval group of manuscript illustrators. This needs to be split into separate articles Elinruby (talk) 23:46, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Wikidata now fixed, per d:Talk:Q702442. You can see the difference in the language links at fr:Années folles as well as the English article. (Who knew that Indonesia had an article about it?) Mathglot (talk) 07:21, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

I don't say it shouldn't be here but it's not our first priority imho given the horrible mess on some of these other pages. Elinruby (talk) 23:19, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

pages created by PootisHeavy[edit]

PootisHeavy (talk · contribs) seems to be creating a lot of pages translated mostly from German Wikipedia, but also Hungarian and Polish. I haven't examined them yet, to see if they all belong here; maybe we could mark them as we go through them, and either strike out or delete the entries that look fine in English, and mark the ones that have already been examined and should stay here.

This list was scraped from the Special:Recent changes page. I'm not sure if this is a general technique we should continue to use, but it certainly pulled up a lot of pages real fast in this case.

Each article may be checked for the following items:

Article status (article link - source lang - what's been done; tbd: what's left to do)

This list was generated by scraping Special:Recent changes on Feb 17 01:48, applying the regex ^\s*N\s+\d\d:\d\d\s+([^(]+)\s+.*?PootisHeavy.*$, and adding bullet and link brackets. Trailing hyphen, language ident, and anything else you see was added manually subsequently (some of it by PootisHeavy!). A longer list of these articles can be found here. All of the following articles have the same problem to a varying extent:
list of FC Barcelona season articles
All of the post-1915 articles were created by the same user, who has been blocked for copyright violation, i.e. not providing the attribution to the Catalan wiki from which they copied these articles. I note some other articles have been deleted entirely, whilst these articles have had text removed, leaving only the tables of results. In the pre-1915 articles, the articles have long existed in a poor state, with the blocked user recently adding the tables of results. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 04:15, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into that. For the one in question, I've added the team highlights and player roster, and fixed up some other stuff, but not sure where that leaves it as far as whether it should be kept or not. In any case, I had already added the {{translated}} banner to the talk page, so this one should be covered. Anyway, it's a boring piece of work, I doubt I'll look at any of the other ones on that list, although the way I fixed this one might be helpful to anyone else that wanted to work on the other ones. Le Juif et la France[edit]

The original French article is fr:Le Juif et la France. Just translated this, and am working on fixing up all the ContentTranslation Tool cruft, but anybody's welcome to jump in and help (yo, Elinruby, this means you ;-) ). Mathglot (talk) 12:46, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

@Mathglot: hey you, just saw this, and it looks like you mostly got the cruft before I got there. I did quibble with you over commas and word order in places (that French "c'était en ____ que" drives me nuts as an english speaker) and made a couple of changes intended to avoid a chance of seeming to endorse the antisemitism. As always, if you vehemently disagree with a change, speak up, I don't bite. IMHO this is no longer a translation problem, but it would be nice to find some additional reference sources so that we can nuke the reflinks to french wikipedia. Incidentally, if you use the translate tool, I wish you would speak up on the proposal on the administrators' noticeboard to nuke a bunch of articles, some of them mine, simply because they were created using the guys tool. I feel the guy's pain but I think the solution is for THAT guy to take a break from that particular wikitask. I'll come back here and give you a link to that discussion. Elinruby (talk) 23:56, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
look here
(edit conflict) @Elinruby: Working on new refs literally as we speak... By all means fix commas or anything else; my first pass in ContentTranslation always requires a second pass for smooth flow in English after publishing, and I haven't done that pass yet. So feel free to jump in and hack away, and appreciate your help!

What doesn't look good is for an article to be in poor English. We have maintenance tags precisely to signal shortcomings in an article that need to be remedied to achieve the goal of a respectable Wikipedia article on the topic the article is about. Largoplazo (talk) 19:28, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
