Amazon has ordered two seasons of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” from “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, Variety has learned. The order marks the first multi-season order for a new series in the streaming service’s history.

The series, written and directed by Sherman-Palladino, stars “House of Cards” and “Manhattan” alum Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a 1958 New York City woman who has everything she’s ever wanted—the perfect husband, two kids, and an elegant Upper West Side apartment perfect for hosting Yom Kippur dinner. But her perfect life suddenly takes an unexpected turn and Midge discovers a previously unknown talent for standup comedy. The pilot became available on Amazon Prime in March.

“In her onstage debut, Mrs. Maisel killed and had audiences responding overwhelmingly with digital applause,” said Joe Lewis, head of comedy, drama and Vr for Amazon Studios. “Like any great young stand-up, we’re excited to see what she has to say next »

'Boss Baby' Repeats at #1 While 'Beauty and the Beast' Closes in on $1 Billion Worldwide

9 April 2017 9:01 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Fox and DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby topped the weekend box office for a second week in a row, once again leading Disney's Beauty and the Beast over the course of what felt like a placeholder weekend as far as new releases are concerned. While Sony's Smurfs: The Lost Village performed mostly as expected and New Line's Going in Style over performed based on expectations, it seems most moviegoers are merely waiting for the next weekend's release of The Fate of the Furious as it looks to become the second 2017 release to debut over $100 million. Otherwise, this weekend also featured a satisfactory opening for Pure Flix's The Case for Christ, which could see its estimates receive a bump today as a result of it being Palm Sunday, while last weekend's release of Ghost in the Shell dipped over 60% in its second weekend in release. ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Tops Foreign Box Office With $41.3 Million

20 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ghost in the Shell” is trying to find redemption overseas after bombing domestically.

The Japanese manga adaptation topped the foreign box office this weekend, taking in a leading $41.3 million from 46 markets. That brings the science-fiction adventure’s global haul to $124.4 million, a disappointing result given its $110 million production budget and the tens of millions spent marketing and distributing the picture. Some publications are conservatively estimating that “Ghost in the Shell” will end its run $60 million in the hole.

Paramount, Reliance, and DreamWorks backed the picture, which stars Scarlett Johansson as a cyber warrior. “Ghost in the Shell” did get a boost from China, where it opened to $21.4 million. Japanese audiences were less receptive. The film debuted to a modest $3.2 million. “Ghost in the Shell” received a social media shellacking for the producers’ decision to cast Johansson in a role originally written for an Asian performer. »

Film Review: ‘Born in China’

15 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When you put the word “Disney” together with the word “nature,” it tends to call up images of something fuzzy and cuddly and anthropomorphically adorable — something, just maybe, too good to be true. “Born in China,” the new wildlife documentary from the studio’s Disneynature division, tells the story of three animal families — pandas, snow leopards, and golden snub-nosed monkeys — living in the colorful splendor of China’s sun-kissed mountains and woodlands. (There are also sideline excursions into tribes of antelope and red-crowned cranes.) The film, directed by Lu Chuan, has most of the qualities you remember from born-in-the-wilderness Disney docs going all the way back to “Beaver Valley” (1950): the narration so friendly and affectionate it just about grins (in this case John Krasinski reading lines like, “To them, this vast mountain range is just one rocky playground!”), the crystal-clear photography, the organizing of the life cycle into a benign kind of storybook fable, »

New York State’s Film Production Incentive Gets Three-Year Extension

21 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

New York State’s newly approved budget, passed by the state senate nine days after the April 1 start of the fiscal year, includes a three-year extension of the Film Production Tax Credit program, the production incentive that has helped make New York — both state and city — a hotbed of production activity in recent years.

The overall $153.1 billion budget includes provisions for the three-year extension of a production incentives program that hadn’t been set to expire until 2019. As proposed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, the new extension brings the expiration date up to 2022, reupping with $420 million per year to sustain a program that includes fully refundable tax credits of 30% on productions and post-production costs incurred in New York state, plus an additional 10% credit on projects with budgets of more than $500,000.

HBO’s John Oliver Slams Gerrymandering As ‘Stupid and Wrong’ (Video)

Oliver then played a montage of political pundits saying that gerrymandering is the biggest threat to our democracy. Gerrymandering, as Oliver explained, allows lawmakers to reshape voting districts to shift the balance of political power, which can be a major problem for a democracy. “Slow down, that is a bit much. Emmys: Final ‘Girls’ Season Makes a Strong Case in Heated Comedy Categories

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

HBO’s “Girls” has maintained a modest presence at the Emmys ever since the program’s big coming-out in 2012 and 2013, when it scooped up two nominations in a row for outstanding comedy series. Adam Driver has shown up consistently in the supporting actor category, while guest stars like Gaby Hoffman and Peter Scolari have been recognized as well. But the show has mostly struggled to reach those early heights again.

That could change with the sixth and final season, which has made for the richest portrait of Lena Dunham’s world yet.

You may well have bailed by now, whether the creator’s outsized activist footprint overshadowed the series, or her various characters’ descent into their own navels made it seem like there was no light at the end of the tunnel. But it’s time to catch up. Things were already on the upswing with season five, and now, with »

Netflix’s surreal sci-fi eight-parter The Oa proved to be a talking point for many reasons.
