This book is an excellent introduction to GraphQL. The authors do an excellent job of explaining what GraphQL is and why GraphQL was created then proceed to explain the different aspects of GraphQL with well-thought-out examples to go along with the concepts. I particularly liked how the book slowly built up to one sizable project that encompassed the different core concepts of GraphQL. Additional examples were provided when necessary to demonstrate certain topics in practice and the authors did a walkthrough of building a schema and the thought process that went into the modelling, which to me is one of the most difficult aspects of learning GraphQL, so that was much appreciated. I also really appreciate that the authors decided to do a quick primer on graph theory, I felt that the graph theory section helped to put me in the GraphQL mindset and helped me to better understand how to think in GraphQL. Overall I loved the book and I look forward to reading more books from Eve and Alex in the future.

This book is not anyone who is looking for in-depth recipes for moderate complexity use cases. For example, if you search on the word "filter", you will get no results because queries are only covered at a very superficial level of detail.

If you're searching for a reference to fill in the detail you need to solve real-world problems and can't find on the internet, this is not that book.

If you're a beginner and you need an overview to get you started, then you'll probably like this book.

This book cuts explains some complex stuff(for a lack of a better term) in a simple way that even I can understand. Not to mention reading a spec can be quite cumbersome, so this book makes GraphQL much easier to digest. I love squeezing in a few pages when I'm on the go.

It adds some extra examples in addition to the graphQL docs online. It is essentially a very basic overview of using Apollo client and server. There is some React in there for the client, but it is not code you would every want to copy. That might be intentional to keep it more basic but all the same it might have been better to keep the client usage non framework specific rather than use bad examples.

That plus the lack of any testing is the reason for the loss of 2 stars. I would still recommend it to anyone who has used the online Docs and wants some more context or examples.
