Wikipedia:Requested templates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Add new requests for a new template or updates to existing templates to the bottom of this page. Please be clear about what the template is used for, roughly what it should look like, and which articles it should link to, if any.

For requests regarding stub templates, go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals.

A general description and guideline for userboxes can be found at Wikipedia:Userboxes. A detailed instruction to use the userbox template can be found at Template:Userbox. For requests regarding userboxes, go to Wikipedia talk:Userboxes/Ideas.

For help with fixing existing templates, you may want to visit Wikipedia:Village pump (technical).

Unstable version[edit]

{{Unstable version}}

WARNING: You are viewing an unstable version of this page, which is believed to be currently subject to edit warring or disruptive editing, and may be under discussion for page protection. Editors are recommended not to make unnecessary changes until any related discussions are closed, as these edits may have to be reverted in order to restore a stable version of the page.

For quickly tagging unstable or contested pages which aren't severe enough to be actually protected - I was recently involved in a major editing dispute on Canadian values where something like this would have been helpful, and more generally it seems pretty common to have to "roll over" good-faith edits when restoring a preferred version.

I'm thinking a big maintenance tag to put at the top of the page, with a clipart of a "wavey" or "alarmed" piece of paper and a nice bright purple of the shade used on the automated pagemove tags. Orchastrattor (talk) 19:52, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

An ambox example of this template is below, if you are an admin, do not delete this, as it is an example

Italians should have their own ethnic side bar Category:Europe ethnic group sidebar templates[edit]

{{Italians sidebar}} There is a large Italian diaspora in the world. Italians need their own ethnic sidebar. 2A02:27AA:0:0:0:0:0:C89 (talk) 05:10, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mexicans should have their own ethnic sidebar.[edit]

{{Mexicans}} Mexicans are one of the largest Hispanic groups in the world. Mexicans should have their own side bar like Puerto Ricans do. 2A02:27AA:0:0:0:0:0:C89 (talk) 05:12, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Guatemalans need their own diaspora template.[edit]

Create {{Guatemalan diaspora}}

A Guatemalan diaspora exists in other countries such as Guatemalan Americans and Guatemalan Mexicans.

{{Rp}} but for repeated citations of YouTube videos[edit]

The template should be able to, when supplied with a link, append "&t=[time in seconds]" to the URL. And ideally allow linking to clips created from a video. Mach61 (talk) 03:18, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Rp template is not able to look back to the preceeding reference. I think {{sfn}} is better expanded for this goal. Wikiwerner (talk) 10:22, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
{{Rp}} is fine for this, just use |at=time-sig. Example:
Rick rolled memories.[1]: 0:43

Template:Dangal TV Programmes[edit]

Religious text primary inline[edit]

{{Religious text primary inline}}

Self-explanitory, just an inline version of {{Religious text primary}} to highlight citations for specific passages instead of blanket-tagging an entire page or section.

Orchastrattor (talk) 20:41, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've created {{Religious text inline}}. → Test.[non-scripture source needed]
Is the phrase "scripture" adequate here? I think it's a straightforward synonym for "religious text" in this usage, but "non-religious text source needed" is too clunky. Remsense 21:25, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A variant of {{label}} on Commons[edit]

I am requesting a template on Commons that works like the {{label}}-template does on Commons, but has the ability to set custom text for the link, similar to [[link to page|display text]], but with the same functions as C:Template:label (that first tries to link to a Wikipedia page in the user's language, and secondly to Wikidata).

It's a bit hard to explain, since the label template is not the same on Wikipedia and Commons.

I was thinking it could be used for shortening the displayed link text when writing things like
"Trams M28 768, M28 730, and M28 722"
but displaying
"Trams M28 768, 730, and 722" (with links)
or
"Stellan Skarsgård and Alexander Skarsgård"
but displaying
"Stellan and Alexander Skarsgård".

I hope this makes sense.

abbedabbtalk 18:37, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Just write it out in Wikitext - what you are suggesting would violate Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Wikidata Phase 2 anyway. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:52, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I need the template I am requesting to be used inside other templates. As I wrote: I need the links to have the same functionality as the label-template on Commons, and that is something that cannot be written in wikitext. Also, I cannot see anything in this template that would violate Phase 2 in any way, since the template will be used on Wikimedia Commons. /abbedabbtalk 20:09, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New template for {{SP400 companies}}[edit]

{{SP400 companies}}

Would be similar to

{{AEX companies}}

But with companies in the S&P 400.

Like this
Do you just want the above copied to a template? Also, what do the asterisks signify? LittlePuppers (talk) 22:46, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, that's the idea. Create a new template that can be added to page footers.
Oops, asterisks are suppose to be bullet point/spacers. Think I need a space after each one? I'll fix that later. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.223.250 (talkcontribs)
You need to put each item on a new line, i.e. so each asterisk starts a line (I did one as an example). LittlePuppers (talk) 00:53, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, all ready. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.223.250 (talkcontribs)
One other thing - do you think you could take a look at my other question on the Talk page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.223.250 (talkcontribs)
See Help:Template limits if you want highly technical details, but I don't think this will be an issue - the problem is rarely number of links, but if the template is doing complex computations, which this is not. (And I am still planning on getting to this request at some point.) LittlePuppers (talk) 21:12, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There are size considerations, but I'll set this template to be collapsed by default. LittlePuppers (talk) 21:13, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, thanks for the info. Yeah, this is just static text (if I'm understanding the page history correctly, it's 8k of text, perhaps 16k of html) so probably not too bad. I'm just mindful of the fact it's almost the whole screen on my phone. Also looking at where the limit might be for future ideas. Clearly the Wilshire 5000 index is gonna be way too large for this to be practical... Would be nice to tie it in with some sort of etiquette or other limit (ie category pages list up to 200 articles on each page, you have to navigate through them). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.223.250 (talk) 23:01, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And if I'm remembering correctly, navboxes like this generally don't show up at all in articles on mobile. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:40, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For the red links, I assume it's better simply to remove the link tag but leave the text in place, rather than actually shorten the list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 18:21, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template that takes in text with spaces and outputs text with underscores[edit]

For use on the attribution template {{AARoads}}. {{Flinkr}} does this, but it also wikilinks the output. Mach61 (talk) 14:13, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you use module:string's replace function? VanIsaac, GHTV contWpWS 15:11, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Mach61: Hi. {{replace|Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet| |_}} would give "Lorem_ipsum_dolor_sit_amet". If it's not enough, we can wrap this template in a new one which just replaces spaces with underscores by default. Jeeputer Talk 18:31, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request for Invitation template - WP: Orphanage[edit]

Cheers, please create an invitation template, for WP:Orphanage. Even though I have little confidence in making this kind of template myself, per instructions, I completed a portion of the content below.

1. Add request at bottom of page

2. For WikiProject Orphanage

3. Please be clear about:

  • What the template is used for:
    • Invite to WikiProject Orphanage
  • Roughly what it should look like:
    • clone of Template:WikiProject Journalism invitation
    • Use instead of Newspaper, adjust px size

4. Invitation text (Template) - first attempt here

Greetings Requested templates,
We would like to invite you to join WikiProject Orphanage, a group of Wikipedians helping improve articles on many topics. "An orphan article has no links from other pages in the main article namespace". If you are new to Wikipedia, de-orphaning articles is a great way to learn a wide variety of useful skills. De-orphaning, when done correctly, will allow you to learn how to navigate within Wikipedia, how to format wikilinks, and how to utilize cleanup tags.
If you're interested, consider adding yourself to the list of participants. For the how-to page, see WP:ORPH. Thank you!

Chances are there might be mistakes in the above, so feel free to adjust where needed. Thanks for helping. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 21:22, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@JoeNMLC: how does Template:WikiProject Orphanage invitation look? LittlePuppers (talk) 07:21, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
 Done - @LittlePuppers Thank you for creating this. I tested (without saving) on my Talk page and it looks to be okay. Next, I will introduce on WP Orphanage talk page before deployment. Cheers! JoeNMLC (talk) 14:26, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template for excessive details[edit]

A template similar to the uw-vandalism1 template It should go like this: Hello, I"m (user). I noticed that you added unneeded details in one or more of (your contributions). It's been removed for now. If you want to know how to be concise, see WP:TLDR.

Note: this is a rough draft of the template. Improvements would be greatly appreciated. ''Flux55'' (talk) 04:53, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
