1 Before You Begin

This chapter describes the minimum hardware, operating system, and disk space required by the Solaris OpenStepTM software.

Installation Sequence

1. Verify the computer meets the minimum configuration as described in "Recommended Computer Configuration".
2. Install the Solaris OpenStep software on the computer as directed in Chapter 2, "Solaris OpenStep Installation."
3. If you have purchased WorkShop OpenStep, install the WorkShop OpenStep as directed by the WorkShop OpenStep Installation Guide.

Recommended Computer Configuration

Before installing OpenStep software, ensure the selected computer meets the minimum requirements described by this section.

Hardware

Each computer you have selected for Solaris OpenStep installation should match or exceed the following:

  • SPARCstationTM 5 or above computer recommended.
  • Solaris 2.4 operating environment or above installed.
  • 32 Mbytes of memory minimum.
  • Local or network access to a CD-ROM drive.

Operating System

Solaris OpenStep and WorkShop OpenStep require Solaris 2.4, 11/94 (Sun OS 5.4) Hardware Release operating environment or higher (with patches) installed. The following Solaris configurations are available: Entire Distribution, Development System Support, End User System Support, and Core System Support.

Use the command uname -a to display the Solaris version of your system. The Output will resemble:

SunOS janedoe 5.4 Generic_101945-23 sun4c sparc

The SunOs 5.4 operating system equates to the Solaris 2.4 operating environment. If the Solaris 2.4 (or higher) operating environment is not installed, install it now using the recommended partitioning shown by Table 1-2, "OpenStep Recommended Partition Sizes", and then install the appropriate Solaris patches. Refer to the appropriate Solaris manuals for procedures.

Disk Drive Space and Partitioning

A maximum local installation requires 400Mbytes for all the OpenStep software and AnswerBooks.

OpenStep Space and Partitioning Requirements

The following two tables provide the disk space and partitioning requirements for OpenStep.

Table 1-1 OpenStep Disk Space Requirements

Software Type No AnswerBooks With AnswerBooks
Solaris OpenStep 63 Mbytes 200 Mbytes
WorkShop OpenStep with SPARCompiler Language System 180 Mbytes 188 Mbytes

Table 1-2 OpenStep Recommended Partition Sizes

Default Partition Disk Space What is Installed
/opt 400 Mbytes Solaris OpenStep withAnswerBooks WorkShop OpenStep with AnswerBooks SPARCompiler Language System
/swap 120 Mbytes not applicable

To confirm that you have enough disk space to install Solaris OpenStep, use the command df -F ufs -k to check the amount of free space. The output will resemble the following listing:

Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s0 61583 10520 44913 19% /

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s6 197383 152820 34698 81% /usr

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s5 76703 35728 37140 49% /var

/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s7 869022 3961 847681 0% /export/home

/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 480511 10418 422043 2% /opt
The total, used, and available space are displayed in kilobytes. In this example, /opt has 422 Mbytes available, which is enough for a full OpenStep installation.
