SF group sex clubs
I thought the ongoing underground gossip about SF sex clubs were
sensational gossips, but apparently it ain't so. To wit:

SAN FRANCISCO (Oct 18, 1996 10:25 p.m. EDT) - San Francisco could
become the first U.S. city to license group sex clubs, if proposed
legislation is passed, a city newspaper reported on Friday.
Tom Ammiano, a member of the city's governing Board of Supervisors, is
working on legislation that would have the city grant permits to
businesses "that encourage patrons to engage in, or to watch other
patrons engaging in, sexual activities," the San Francisco Chronicle
said.
The proposal, still in draft form, must be passed by the Board of
Supervisors before it becomes law.
One aim of the proposed legislation is to stop the spread of AIDS and
other sexually transmitted diseases by regulating the sex clubs.
Sex clubs are large, open rooms where patrons pay between $5 and $20
to congregate for sex, masturbation and voyeurism, the Chronicle said.
It said that currently, there are six to eight mostly gay commercial
sex clubs open daily to the public in San Francisco and a dozen or
more private clubs that meet occasionally. The clubs are largely
underground and unregulated, it said.
Under the proposed law, sex clubs would be required to provide
condoms, lubricants, proper lighting and AIDS-prevention literature.
The clubs would be subject to regular inspections.
Ammiano could not be reached for comment on Friday.
The proposal legislation is expected to be introduced in the San
Francisco Board of Supervisors late this year or early 1997.
