Subject: World AIDS Day in Hanoi
The HIV/AIDS Action Group is a wide open forum for groups involved in
HIV/AIDS activities in Vietnam. A World AIDS Day working group was
formed at the September meeting of the Hanoi HIV/AIDS Action Group,
under the leadership of the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture and
Information. The working group planned several activities.
A UNAIDS activity, the UNICEF Mekong Project, is working with the
Ministry of Information and Culture to hold a training course for
journalists. Thirty journalists and editors sat together to discuss the
messages that they perceived in AIDS posters, consider the use of clear
language, and talk to peer educators and people living with HIV.
The working group also mediated funding for a production of a Cheo
theatre piece for World AIDS Day. Cheo is the northern Vietnamese comic
folk operetta beloved by rural people.
Another activity is the production of a documentary film on HIV/AIDS
entitled *I Understand* by the National Documentary Film Bureau. The
filmmakers will work with community workers and health workers in four
provinces to produce a thirty minute film that will be shown on
national and regional television.
These are just the activities planned by the HIV/AIDS Action Group in
Hanoi. Each of the sixteen Ministries and mass organisations that
compose the National AIDS Committee will be sponsoring their own World
AIDS Day activities. An example is the Vietnam Red Cross, launching a
new manual for youth peer educators this World AIDS Day weekend.
District level youth volunteers have spent the last four days learning
how to use the manual effectively in their work.
Provincial AIDS Committees also plan their own programmes. The
Provincial AIDS Committee of Ho Chi Minh City will be extremely busy in
the next few days putting the final touches on their World AIDS Day
plans.
