Dennis Grasser

When I was still dangling on your nipple
Squirming like a worm
Trying to bury myself between your breasts
You would silence my cry with sweet notes of pride

When I passed my boyhood years
And hairs grew upon my face
I ran away with the neighbor's boy
You cried and cursed me in ignorance

You said I am a freak of Nature
That I bring shame to our family
That I must be cast out, disowned

So I have not talked or seen you since
Many winters have scarred my face
The silver threads upon my head must equal those on yours

I have been away too long
Mother. The grass in your garden must
Have overtaken the pear tree

Mother, please, let me come home
And hear you sing to me those notes of pride
