Development at 6th and Campbell

It's down to the wire and Sam Hughes neighbors have voted on which of the developer's plans they like the best for the corner of 6th and Campbell. If you'd like to see the results click here.

For those of you new to the discussion, the entire block between Campbell and Norris and 6th and 7th is being redeveloped by Town West Realty. Their first proposal was for a 46 unit student housing project, which the neighbors hated. as a result of neighborhood input, the developer and his chief architect have come up with 4 alternatives. All but one of the new proposals will require changes to the zoning as well as to the neighborhood plan. The neighbors chose a mixed use plan with a cluster of commercial buildings at the corner of 6th and Campbell, and 60 2-3 BR condominiums.

If you haven't already done so, please take a moment to fill out the membership application at Participate. If you feel inclined, please sign on to one of our committees, participate in the newsletter and website, or let us know if you're willing to be contacted when we need neighbors to attend hearings, pass out leaflets, or make phone calls. There is a job to fit any skill level and any time constraint. And board participation is a great way to meet some wonderful people who also happen to be neighbors.

The Sam Hughes Neighborhood Association has a reputation for being one of the most powerful and influential in the city. Our power comes not from the Board, which after all is but a few individuals, but from the strength and dedication of all of you. Please show that commitment by becoming active in SHNA.

National Historic District Designation (and what it means to you)

The National Register of Historic Places recently completed a survey of the Sam Hughes boundary (Speedway-Broadway and Country Club to Campbell). The entire neighborhood is now officially a "national historic district." Typically, any owner-occupied home that is 50 years old and whose facade has not been dramatically changed nor has a high wall been constructed is considered "contributing." If your property has received such a designation, you may qualify for a reduction in your real estate taxes. To find out your property's designation and to apply for the tax reduction, go to Himmel Library and ask for the materials. Now that our entire neighborhood has been classified "National Historic District," we are publicly proclaiming our designation with signage at 61 locations on the perimeter of our boundary and "on the T" (Tucson Blvd. & 6th St). Some of the proceeds from this year's home tour and a grant from the Southwestern Foundation helped fund this project.
