News: "The writer creates half the text. The reader creates the other half."

Taking a break from both work and Star Wars Galaxies, I'm here to give you a quick update about the five stories you currently see if you look over at the "Latest Stories" box. You'll notice that the story Freedom by AngryAlex has received two additional chapter updates. Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 are there for your reading consumption. The story continues with an odd turn of events that make the main characters suspicious that something major could be happening soon. I don't want to give anything away, so check it out.

We have also received Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 to the story Bane - Hero of the North. This is one of the longer stories we have on site, and one that I really enjoy reading. It takes many parts of the Diablo world and expands upon them, making them far more interesting than the now tired and oft repeated storyline of the games. It's much nicer to see the world of Sanctuary from a different perspective.

Finally, Anyee has given us another chapter to Fulcrum with the addition of Chapter 12. Her writing never ceases to be entertaining and artfully constructed. It is always refreshing and enjoyable. Fans of Fulcrum, enjoy.

That's all folks.

News: The Third Judge
Posted by: Kahn on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 10:25 AM
This is just an announcement that Anyee and I have selected Darkest90 as the third judge for the Fan Fiction Contest. He was selected in order bring balance to the force... erm to bring his knowledge of Warcraft material and fan fiction to our judicious table. We are glad to have him take on part of the responsibility of judging the contest entrees.

News: Happy 1000 Members TDL!
Posted by: Anyee on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 - 04:03 AM
Over one thousand people have joined The Dark Library. That’s a pretty amazing feat, given that the site’s only been up for a few months. Kahn and I are thrilled at what the site has become and we hope, along with Elly, Rush, and the rest of the admins, that the site will continue to grow, gain power, and eventually take over the world. Okay, only I hope that last bit, but I’m sure that they’d hope it too given the right incentives.

We’ve got a nice variety of pieces for you on this celebratory day. The first is by a new author, Angry_Alex, who submits the first chapter of what promises to be an interesting work, titled Freedom. A vague and disturbing story about two ancients who meet and stand watch over humanity, for better and worse. Another new TDL writer, though well-known to anyone on the diabloii.net fan fiction forum, Disco-neck-ted submits his humorous post-D2 story, Fast Trackin’ in Hell. Anyone who’s ever worked in corporate America should take a good look at this piece for the resume remarks alone. Our third piece is a Diablo 2 Character concept called Vampyrus Dominus by (what else) Porphyria. A less technical concept than others on the site, this vampire idea is nonetheless well written and complete though I don’t know how I feel about genetic vampirism.

Chapter 11 of Fulcrum has found its way up, somehow. Finally, the long-awaited continuation of Ron_Lugge’s "The Dark Return” in Chapter Five and Chapter Six. Dragons, extra magics, a bit of angel fighting.

In our articles section, you’ll find two new non-fiction works. The first is a Twenty Questions with Anumati, an interview with a longtime contributor to both the Dark Library and the diabloii.net Forums. Next is a brief wandering essay on the Why of fan fiction, a musing I came up with when contemplating the success of the Dark Library

In related news, we are in the process of compiling a definitive Diablo 2 reference for writers and gamers alike, complete with explanations and history for the major characters and plot of the game. Find information on it over here in the Diablo 2 FFF. We’re welcoming submissions and aid in this monumental task; anyone who contributes useful material will be credited in the final version. It will eventually be edited and webbed as part of the permanent TDL article selection.

That’s it! Thanks for a great 1000. Keep up the good work.

News: Another break-of-dawn update
Posted by: Anyee on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 04:49 AM
Summer seems to bring all sorts of exciting things, like fat people in thongs, constant 100% humidity, beer-flavored ice cream, and the Red Sox losing at least once a week. Most exciting of all is the wonderful writing we have for you this week.

To start out, we have a few character concepts. l33t makes his triumphant and ill-tempered return with the Shieldmaiden, a female paladin who uses Magic: The Gathering (tm) techniques, but not the cards themselves, as an inspiration for her skill trees. Don't worry, no tapping of mana or Timming to death will result from reading this concept. The Thief, also by l33t, is unsurprisingly based on a robber and trickster character that uses one of my favorite weapons, the swordcane. A samurai-based character, the Ronin comes to us from Nonentity. This one is extremely detailed and fairly faithful to traditional concepts of the way of the samurai. Finally, we have another one of chiasticslide's character concepts, entitled the Myrmidon, a hack and slash character that wins neuroscience points for using the word ataxia. For those who are curious, the American Heritage Dictionary defines a Myrmidon as "a member of a warlike Thessalian people who were ruled by Achilles and followed him on the expedition against Troy" or "a faithful follower who carries out orders without question." Now you know.

Our fiction category also has several additions. Chapter Three of Tales of Arnaticum by chefo is up. Yet another long and intricate chapter about this ongoing and brutal war. Speaking of long and intricate, Fulcrum gets updated to the tune of Chapter 8, Chapter 9, and Chapter 10. Nephalim features some familiar names in some unfamiliar settings in his story, Last Dance. This one is definitely made for our older and more mature readers; caveat lector!

Here are the answers to a few questions we've been recently asked that do not warrant an addition to the FAQ. We're in the process of choosing a Warcraft-experienced judge for the contest. Our selection will be announced shortly. You may reply to reviews as another review without a star rating or reply using PM/email. We have no idea when Diablo 3 is coming out. Don't laugh, someone has asked us that three times.

To close, I'd like to offer this message to all the kids out there in their teens who are having a rough time: it does get better. Take care and get some sleep, all.

Wrong side of the sunrise update...
Posted by: Anyee on Thursday, July 03, 2003 - 04:32 AM
I'm taking a bit of time away from my Xenosaga game to update TDL, because I love you all. Also, because the forums moved IP addresses again and I've not found out who Rush needs me to kill to get them back up again. From my bo staff to God's ears, eh? Moving on...

Nephalim's Ninja is a modified assassin with many barbarian-like qualities, by the writer's own admission. Includes learning anatomy as a way to kill enemies more effectively, qualities after my own heart. Continuing his successful run of dramatically overpowered Diablo characters is chiasticslide, this time with the General. Like the necromancer, only he summons live soldiers to make formations, take damage, and fight for him...I'm picturing something out of Age of Empires 2, complete with racecar. (You DID know about the racecar code, didn't you?)

In the story area, we have a piece called Forgotten by RevenantsKnight, which takes place sometime between the fall of Tristram and the start of Diablo 2. A bit theatrical, but good reading nonetheless. I've also added Chapter Six and Chapter Seven of Fulcrum.

Finally, with great happiness and relief we present Chapter Four of Ira's Legends of Azeroth. We find ourselves in Kalimdor, our hero having landed in the hands of the Night Elves; watch for the brief Hercules reference in the middle.

That's it for tonight, folks. Stay tuned for more works and more excitement. Keep those contest submissions coming! It's now 5:00. The sun is broaching the top of the sardine can I call home and it's time for sleep. Night night!

News: Update
Posted by: Kahn on Tuesday, July 01, 2003 - 11:41 AM
I have a quick update to make today. The rest of the story Emissary by ThatCanadianGuy (a story which I have really enjoyed reading) has been added. That means you have Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, and the Epilogue to read. While the story does seem to end suddenly, I really enjoyed the way it was written with the many twists in the plots. As the author states in one of the summaries "things aren't always as they seem."

Following we have a piece by Snowglare entitled Pilot. Simply stated, Pilot takes you on a trip. Snowglare blinds you with a fantasy web of first person perspective writing, making you comfortable with the story. Then, he mercilessly slams you into a spike pit. Enjoy.

News: Change to Fan Fiction Contest to include "General Fiction"
Posted by: Anyee on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 05:03 PM
We've heard you, in your writing (or lack thereof) and in your suggestions to us as judges. Therefore, we are announcing a change in the contest.

The Second Category, which asked you to complete a fragment in the style of your choosing, has been discontinued because...well, no one liked it.

It is being replaced with a "General Fiction" category, which reads as follows.

The worlds of Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 are amazingly vast, with a history that extends beyond what we merely play in the game. It is the size of the world that makes writing in it a rich and varied experience. Therefore, the challenge of this category will be write a story in the world of your choice, trying not to use a particular quest as its base.

Here are the specifics of this category:

Write a story in either the Warcraft or Diablo 2 universe. It may incorporate already extant characters, such as Lysander or Luthius, but it should focus primarily on an author-created person. It should focus on times not detailed in the game, such as the Warchief's liberation from his captors or the journey of the travelers from the Rogue Encampment to Lut Gholein. However, storyline specific entries will be accepted, but will start at a minor disadvantage to their wholly created counterparts. If you choose to do a quest-centered story, it should not use any of the premade dialogue from the game. This should be your own work, as much as possible.

To accommodate new writers, the contest is being extended to August 25th, 2003.

If you entered in the First Category, your work remains unaffected. If you enter into this new category, both will be judged but only one will win.

We hope this encourages further writers to enter. The contest pages will be updated shortly to reflect this.

News: Submitted for your reading pleasure
Posted by: Kahn on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 12:35 PM
I should currently be doing the job I'm being paid to do, but I'd rather be doing an update for TDL (plus I'm still getting paid either way). Anyway, we have five new pieces for you to browse. With as many submissions as we've received in the past few days, these five may not be the only additions for today. Either that or the scripts running TDL will implode on themselves from such heavy usage, whichever comes first.

Following some constructive criticism written from the awe-inspiring pen of l33t, chiasticslide has revamped his original Potentialist character concept to Version 2.0. Chiasticslide has also submitted the Crab, which is another Legend of the Five Rings inspired character (although we were led to believe that the previous one was going to be his last). The Crab will make those of you who liked toying with the necromancer's bone wall and bone prison happy because one of the skill trees gives you the ability to construct many defensive structures. Of course, these skills have far more use than the above mentioned necromancer skills.

The last character concept today mixes Diablo II with some time traveling sci-fi action. The Cyborg by SoulRitual makes for an entertaining read, and it is interesting to see how SoulRitual chose to integrate a cyborg into the world of Diablo.

Speaking of sci-fi, chefo has added Chapter 1 to his space story Encounter. The conflict previewed in the prologue continues to be developed and progressed forward. Lastly, ThatCanadianGuy has submitted Emissary - Prologue. It's a piece that I have enjoyed because it reminded me (and maybe just me) of how an old school RPG plot would be introduced and written. I cannot wait to read the rest of the story (since it has been finished and submitted already) when I get the time and freedom to do so.

It looks like the forum problem is finally getting resolved; hopefully I won't jinx it by stating this. Anyway, enjoy these stories.

News: Warcraft and Character Concept Updates
Posted by: Anyee on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 10:53 PM
It is a pleasant, but all-too-unusual, task to update The Dark Library twice in a single week. However, the submission page seems to have been set to overdrive and we have, as a result, a batch of new stories to present to you.

The upsettingly sparse Warcraft section gets some much needed new writing thanks to Nephalim. Three solid stories set within the world of Warcraft III, both clear and unsettling in all the right ways. The first, The Long Vigil, tells the story of a night elf as she awaits the return of her lover from his long sleep. A battle, a lost love, and a better physical description of harpies than the game actually allowed. Morning on Aerie Peak finds a human battling the elements, and himself, after a brutal and futile battle against the Orcs. Excellent descriptions done in ways that resemble classical Latin structure. Finally, a half-elf reclaims her heritage at the price of her blood-innocence in Ranger. All three are very bittersweet, ending in ways that give closure but not total satisfaction.

Showing him/herself as more than a one-world writer, Nephalim offers the Managtanem which, according to this website, is one of ten types of Filipino witches. This is evident in the Voodun and Voodoo influenced skills and abilities of the character. Chiasticslide gives us two more of his renowned character concepts. The first, called The Darkangel has what might be my favorite Skill Tree, ever: "Sealed Techniques of the Apocalypse." For those who couldn't figure it out from the title, it is an angel who comes to earth, losing his divinity but retaining is power. The Potentialist is a ridiculously overpowered character who asks simple questions and gives obnoxiously potent answers. Really, this guy has magic to spare. Quite impressive. Finally, we have Eurthe's Seeker, a modified assassin character that has my favorite skill name ever, Kelvin. (Can you imagine asking people to max Kelvin? Whee.) Has a trap tree much like the Assassin, only more useful.

We know the forums have been experiencing some downtime, but questions about the contest can be left here in the comment areas of the news posts or directed to our email. The contest has several entries, but we have room and time for many more, so keep them coming.
