Faux postage or Artistamps are "fake" postage stamps produced by a myriad of artists around the world. The stamps that they create are sometimes used in, but not limited to, other art forms such as collage, mail art (decorating items and sending them through the postal system via snail mail), or just to stand alone for the sake of just being creative.
These delightful miniature pieces of art and graphic design are called "Cinderellas" -- non-government issued stamps -- by those who are serious stamps collectors (Philatelics).
FauxPostage.com is here to list other sites, inform and provide a place for you and other artists to show off their Artistamps and Mail Art! So let's see some of your stuff! Yes, even those of you who use the stamps in other types of artwork such as book arts and collage! I will be delighted to display your art! (And, yes, that is me in the FauxPostage above.)
Lately I have been emailed a lot about perforating Artistamps. There are a variety of ways to produce perforations including using a dressmaker's wheel, special scissors that cut in a "wave" pattern and, of course, there is nothing wrong with producing stamps sans perfs by just cutting them straight. However, if you are lucky enough to have an old Rosback perforator, then you have the real thing....perfect, round perforations in gummed stock.
WPC-NM.com Since I do not own a perforator, I do the next best thing: I purchase pre-perforated stock from WPC-NM Online. They carry 4 types of bright white artistamp papers in stock at all times for immediate delivery. All papers are dry-gummed, to produce a finished piece of art like it's supposed to be... miniature and meant to be licked.
You can choose from:
- 50# English (matte) finish, bright white dry-gummed stamp stock.
- 60# English (matte) finish, bright white printing surface, dry-gummed on the back.
- 60# C2S (coated 2 sides) Litho quality, glossy bright white finish.
- 60# KromeKote - a super high gloss finish, bright white dry-gummed paper that gives a sharp, clear image.
Their service and prices are wonderful, and they, of course, are part of The Olathe Poste which will be of interest to those who would like custom perforating:
The Olathe Poste offers pinhole, straight-line perforating services...
The Olathe Poste will perforate your artistamps, poster stamps, Cinderella stamps, or real postage stamps for small countries on their original, 1916 vintage Rosback pinhole perforator. Visit their site for more information on preparing your Artistamps for perforating.
