Arcade collections succeed through a combination of nostalgia, packaging and solid gameplay. Capcom Classics Collection Remixed contains twenty arcade games from the late 80's and early 90's – the majority are either fighters or shooters of one type or other. As is typical with such collections there are true classics and solid performers mixed in with some throw-away games and a few real clunkers. The gameplay for most of the games has held up well through the years, which is helped by the simple controls and friendly user interface. The games can be viewed full screen or in their original arcade format and you won't have to wait too long for any of them to load up before you start playing. There is even trivia and extras about each game you unlock as you play further into the game. Aside from being to get a cross-company ‘my favorite arcade games' collection, Capcom Classics Collection Remixed shows how to build a compelling collection of arcade games for the handheld gamer. Even if you've never played any of these games before, there is enough fun and variety of gameplay to keep you going for hours, and keep you coming back time and again for small bits of arcade glory.
My wife hates the modern arcade, and I can't blame her. We have two young boys who are still a bit young for most T rated games, but the focus of the games at many arcades is on fighters and shooters and other more mature themes. This has been the case for many years, and Capcom Classics Collection Remixed contains many games aimed at the teens who were hitting the local arcades in the late 1980's.
Given that you spend much of your time in the Capcom Classics Collection Remixed either shooting or hacking at something, the T rating is not a surprise. For example, in Captain Commando you will slice enemies in half in somewhat graphic fashion, and occasionally you will die that way as well. These games are all intense shooters, brawlers and fighters, and cater to a somewhat older audience. Of course, these are all older arcade games, and have been played by pre-teens for many years. My personal tendency with my own kids would be to give them free access to about half the games in this collection, but the amount of violence and intensity – especially in many of the fighting games – makes me recommend this as a teen-oriented game. As always use your best judgment with your child.
