Dialects of Afghanistan

Monji
Monji (or Monjani) is spoken near the source of the Kokcha River in northeastern Afghanistan.

 

Yedqa TOP
The Yedqa dialect is closely tied to Monji, and is spoken in the Lutkukch River Valley. The total number of Monji and Yedqa speakers is estimated at a few thousand. Below is a sample of Yedqa:


Translation:
"There was a young man who had a wife and two sons".

 

Parachi TOP
This dialect is spoken in the villages along the Shotol River (north of Kabul). Parachi was also spoken in the Panjshir Valley in the first half of the 20th century, but has since given way to Tajiki Persian. All Parachi speakers are bilingual. Below is a sample of Parachi:

Translation:
"The was a strong man name Hanifa, he left his house and took three of his men along with him".

 

Ormuri TOP
Ormuri (or Baraki or Bargista) is the dialect of a small tribe of people known as Ormuri or Baraki. Ormuri is divided into two main branches:

- Logar (south of Kabul)
- Kani Guram (in Pakistan)

In the past Ormuri was spoken in a much larger territory. In the 19th century it was spoken in the north and west of Kabul. Gradually, this dialect gave way to Tajiki Persian and Pashto. Ormuri is rapidly disappearing. Especially, in Pakistan. Below is a sample of Ormuri:

Translation:
"A beggar came by the door [of the house]. He was very hungry".
