History

Originally, we started out as a small group of individuals from Los Angeles and Orange Counties of Southern California in February 1995. Since then, we have grown and expanded via the internet with members from other states. We hope this new development of our site on the internet will provide a safer space for Vietnamese queers or those questioning to connect, to share information and to start a virtual community of support.

Ô-Môi's origin

"What is Ô-Môi?" you may ask. "Ô-Môi" is a slang word in Viet Nam for lesbians. This term emerged in Saigon as a slang for lesbians during the late 1960s to mid-1970s. Ô-Môi itself is a tropical tree found in Viet Nam. This tree has flowers and pods. "Naughty' school children in Viet Nam would eat the insides of the pods for fun because it really is not that tasty. It is said to be pungent and yet addictive after one gets the hang of it. It is how one consumes this fruit that the meaning lesbian seems fitting.
