The Original...

Welcome to the official site for our GayArabs Chat Channel and Mail List. We believe ours was the first IRC channel anywhere on the Internet exclusively for gay Arabs and their friends. We have been in continuous operation since 1992.

Many things have changed on the Internet since our beginning. Now there are several IRC channels, mail lists and web sites which serve the gay Arab community. We are very proud to have played an active part in it and perhaps to have been a small inspiration to others.

Seeking A Gay Oasis...

The founders, having thoroughly searched the Internet for anything referring to "gay Arabs", quickly realized that no outlets were available. There were no safe places to visit where one's sexuality could be questioned without great embarrassment. Nowhere within the Arab community could anyone be found who would welcome discussions about such personal feelings.

Of course there were other gay and gay friendly Arabs on the Internet but where were they? How could they introduce themselves to each other in a safe environment? Was this desire nothing more than an impossible dream? How many others had traveled this far?

A Legend is Born...

A web site or mail list might be too risky to try at first. There had to be something which could be protected by secrecy...something only others who were looking for the same thing would be able to find.

The EFnet servers were one of the most popular IRC servers at the time and many Arabs were known to use them. So it was finally decided that a channel called #GayArab would be opened in IRC on the EFnet servers.

They were not Alone...

It was not very long before a second guy entered the channel...and then a third! These first three guys are considered to be the founders of our channel. Two of the guys are fairly well known among the first people who regularly visited the channel. The third guy remains a mystery to all but a few select people. Even the author of this page does not know who he is without a doubt!

During the early days, many people would pop in and out of the channel without a word. There were others who took the courage to stay and chat. Within a short time, the channel had it's own bots and many regular users. Not long afterward, a #GayLebanon channel was opened as well. We are still alive and kicking after all these years. Please join us on any Undernet server for a friendly chat.
