"Matchbook Seeks Maniac" is the latest single from cult San Franciscan
trio Deerhoof. Taken from Friend Opportunity, released earlier in 2007,
it’s a fine example why their ninth full-length album has been their
most critically and commercially successful to date. In their 13 years
together, the band, now comprising guitarist John Dieterich,
singer/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki and drummer Greg Saunier, has progressed
from being bunch of baffling noiseniks to the darlings of the US indie
scene.
The second single to be taken from the album, "Matchbook Seeks Maniac"
will be released as both a special, vinyl picture disc in a European
limited edition of 1000 and a digital download. The front and back
images come via the hand (and twisted mind) of celebrated Scottish
absurdist David Shrigley, who also designed the multiple covers for
Friend Opportunity.
On the A-side, "Matchbook Seeks Maniac" appears in a remixed version taken
from the end credits of the 2007 movie Dedication, which was scored in
its entirety by the band. Sounding like a hybrid of J-pop and power pop
and tripped out ‘60s pop, it has more peaks and troughs than Bill
Murray’s film career.
On the B-side is the Japanese-language track "Makko Shobu". Previously
available only in the US, the song tells the delightful story of two
sperm whales in love. Both songs display Deerhoof's occasional sweet
tooth for hymn-like, organ-centered pop with a harmonic sophistication
seemingly meant to impress both Brian Wilson and Igor Stravinsky.
Your next opportunity to catch the band live is at Release The Bats, a
one-off All Tomorrow’s Parties event on 2 November at The Forum, London.
Beginning at 7pm and ending at 2am, the stellar line-up includes
Deerhoof, Liars, Deerhunter, Black Lips, Fuck Buttons, DJ Fra (Ferenc /
Kompakt) and ATP DJs. And as it takes place on the first Friday after
Halloween, punters are being encouraged to dress up in spooktacular (or
kooktacular) costumes. Special prizes are being given to people who
dress up in a costume that’s related to one of the bands… so if you can
track down an elusive Bambi costume, you’ve nailed it.
