Natto

Natto - a food with thrombolytic properties print pdf

Natto is a fermented food that has strong thrombolytic properties. No research has been performed on natto and cluster headaches, but impaired blood flow appears to be a contributing factor in clusters and migraines, and natto may be a treatment that helps with that. Natto contains an enzyme called nattokinase, which has been compared to urokinase. (Urokinase is produced by the body, and a dose of urokinase is often administed to patients with stroke, pulmonary embolism, or heart attack). While Anticoagulants prevent the formation of blood clots, thrombolytics like urokinase and nattokinase can actually dissolve clots that have already formed.

While natto contains enzymes that dissolve blood clots, it is also a rich source of vitamin K, which is necessary for blood clotting. As some anticoagulants (coumadin, warfarin) act by blocking vitamin K, natto should not be consumed by those on a prescribed course of anticoagulants.

Natto also affects calcium metabolism; both the vitamin K and the sticky natto goo (polyglutamin) are involved in the absorption of calcium into the blood, and the incorporation of calcium into bone. Areas where natto is frequently consumed have lower rates of osteoporosis.

Natto in Japan

Natto is frequently consumed in eastern Japan, an area known for its low incidence of strokes. The typical serving size is 50 - 100 grams (approximately 2-4 ounces), and it may be eaten once or several times per week. Natto is often called 'sticky beans' in the west, and that name is appropriate, as the soybeans are coated with a slimy goo that stretches into long strands. The smell and taste of natto are also unique (and an acquired taste for most people, although I enjoy it). Small packets of mustard or soy sauce are often included in store-bought natto.

Natto in the United States

Many Asian food stores carry natto in the frozen food section. Three or four individually packed servings retail for about $2.50. Purified natto enzyme (nattokinase) is also available as a supplement. Although purified nattokinase is rather pricey (~30 cents per capsule), it compares favorably with a serving of natto as a food.
