The concept of the United Voluntary Services (UVS) came into being two days after "Pearl Harbor Day", when a group of ladies organized to help with civil defense. The UVS members work together under the banner of their greatest common denominator - "SERVICE'. The Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service program came into being in 1946, under the direction of General Omar Bradley and his staff, at the termination of World War II. It was General Bradley who gave UVS, its emblem, a bridge with the motto, "BUILD A BRIDGE OF SERVICE'. Helen Lengfeld was our first National President. Upon meeting Helen Lengfeld, General Bradley greeted her, "I am delighted to see a group such as yours, a cross section of our committees, building that bridge to our VA Centers". He continued, "That is greatly needed, a two-way street between the hospitals and their communities that your United Volunteer Services can undertake". The continued building of this bridge has been one of the greatest aims of UVS ever since. Marie J. Dunlap was our second National President. At the May 2006 annual meeting, the UVS National Board of Directors elected Mary Lee as our third National President. Meeting the unmet needs of the veterans has been the pattern of the UVS volunteers across the nation. The greatest asset of this organization is it's flexibility, and "never saying NO" to a worthwhile request for help and assistance is what makes UVS service possible. The community services and Veterans Affairs Medical Center activities are too numerous to mention. It's Not What You Get From Volunteer Work, Or Even What You Give... "It's What You Become". | |
