Ethnicity profiles: Scotland
The area of Perth and Kinross is very white, but not especially Scottish, at least from an ethnic perspective.
With 99% of its residents of White ethnic origin, it had the highest proportion of this group among major towns and cities in Scotland at the time of the 2001 Census. However, its proportion of White Scottish residents was just over 85%, three percentage points lower than the national average.
The reason for this is that nearly 15,000 people living in Perth and Kinross in 2001 were from the Other White British ethnic group. This proportion of residents - 11% - is second only to Edinburgh nationally, and is more than three times that of Glasgow.
Its populations of other ethnic minority groups - particularly Black and Asian - are very low. Out of a total population of 134,000, there are only 367 Asians and 137 black people living in the area. These figures are far less than the national average; in the case of the Asian group, more than four times so.
