Casino Royale (2006)

Casino Royale Teaser Poster

Bartender: “Shaken or stirred?”
Bond: “Does it look like I give a damn?”

Overview: In the 21st James Bond film, we go back to the superspy's origins (think Bond-man Begins). 007 faces off against Le Chiffre, banker to international terrorists. As is our custom (and to avoid spoiling the film for those who haven't seen it), we offer only a preliminary drink count until the DVD is released. Daniel Craig is off to a good start as Bond: he easily breaks the record for number of drinks in a single film (smashing Sean Connery's record in Goldfinger).

What does Bond drink?

  • At the casino in the Bahamas, Bond orders a Mount Gay rum and soda. While specifying soda would usually mean seltzer, in this case, he receives a rum and cola (as in Coca- or Pepsi-).
  • Bond and Solange drink flutes of champagne. 007 then orders bottle of Bollinger.
  • On the train to Montenegro, Bond has a large glass of whiskey (we're guessing bourbon).
  • On the train, 007 and Vesper share a bottle of Château Angélus claret.
  • When Bond and Vesper meet with Mathis in the café, they both have flutes of champagne. (Interestingly, the villain they are tailing appears to be drinking a Campari-based drink, perhaps an Americano, Bond's first-ever drink.)
  • At the bar in the Salon Privé, Bond creates the Vesper, a mixture of gin, vodka and Kina Lillet (Kina Lillet is no longer produced, so modern drinkers must use Lillet Blanc). He drinks at least three of the cocktails during the film (three of the other poker players also order the drink). By the way, a bottle of Pinch scotch (another old Bond favorite) can be seen behind the bar.
  • 007 has two additional martinis, one of which is central to the plot.
  • In his hotel room, Bond pours drinks from a decanter of whiskey.

Other people’s drinks:

  • Mathis has several drinks, including a whiskey in Bond's hotel suite.
  • Vesper has several drinks, including part of the martini named for her.
  • M has a drink while in her office.
  • Le Chiffre drinks champagne.

Product placement: A Heineken poster is seen in an airport. Château Angélus and Bollinger are mentioned in the credits.

By the book: Based on Casino Royale. Overall, the film is surprisingly faithful to Fleming's original novel.

Total: 12 (and possibly one or two more).
