The first
Bombay Urban Transport Project (BUTP) commenced in March
1977 and was completed in June, 1984. The total cost of BUTP
was Rs.391.4 million including a US $ 25 million loan from
the World Bank. MMRDA was the borrower of the loan, and Brihan
Mumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking (BEST) and
Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were the executing
agencies of the project. The project concentrated mainly
on improving the bus transport system in Mumbai operated
by the BEST by procuring buses, construction of flyovers,
installation of traffic signals etc.
