Wadala Truck Terminal

In December, 2005, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has been appointed as a Special Planning Authority for the 115.44 ha. Wadala Truck Terminal Area in the island city. The basic objective of developing the Truck Terminal is to decongest South Mumbai by shifting the existing transport companies offices and godowns, which are today concentrated in B & C Wards in South Mumbai causing severe traffic congestion. It will also help to rationalise the movement of truck traffic on the city roads

The Truck Terminal currently under development by the MMRDA at Wadala, Mumbai will have for the first time a centralized facility for the transport of goods by road. Designed for a peak capacity of 3,000 trucks at a time, the truck terminal will have offices and godowns of transport companies, easy loading and unloading facilities, large parking areas for idle trucks and other related facilities like banks, restaurants, dormitories for essential staff, dispensaries, motor spare part shops, petrol / HSD pumps, repair garages, workshops, etc.

In order to ensure proper regulation and management of this new Truck Terminal, legislation for setting up Truck Terminal Authority has been enacted by the State Government.

This area is being developed progressively in four phases. The first phase on about 25 ha. of land has been provided with all the basic infrastructure facilities and the construction of four buildings accommodating godowns, shops and offices is completed. The construction work of Amenity Building which has provision for Police Station, MTNL, Fire Station, Post & Telegraph Office and staff quarters and dormitories, for their essential staff is also completed. The work of providing infrastructure facilities in Phase-II will be taken up shortly. Construction of link roads like Wadala-Anik Road and Sion-Koliwada Connector is completed.

It is also proposed to develop a Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in this area to provide for much needed terminal and alighting facility for the long distance buses and the passengers.

The Govt. of Maharashtra, vide its Notification No.TPB-4305/CR-318/05, UD-11 dated 3rd December, 2005 designated MMRDA as Special Planning Authority for this area under the provisions of Maharashtra Regional & Town Planning (MR&TP) Act, 1966. The SPA area covers the areas designated as Truck Terminal and ISBT.

STUP consultants appointed for preparation of master plan for Truck Terminal and  & Inter State Bus Terminal and  providing consultancy services for preparing Business plan for effective development of lands and Infrastructural facilities. The consultancy also includes the detailed Techno-Economic-and Financial feasibility study for development of ISBT on Design Build Operate and Transfer (DBOT) basis. The consultants have submitted their planning proposal. The planning proposal is approved by Authority. Authority has also approved ISBT on DBOT basis. Once the planning proposal is sanctioned by Govt. work on ISBT will be started. ISBT will be completed till December, 2010.
