The Crafts and Lace Site I have always loved to do craft work and learned to do tatting when I was 13 years old. My mother taught me but neither of us realised until a couple of years later that I wasn't making the tatting stitch correctly. In the late 1970s a tatting exhibition was held in Smith's Wool Shop in Sauchiehall (pronounced suckeehol) Street in Glasgow. I had realised by then that I was doing something wrong because I couldn't make rings with a single thread between them. The lady hosting the exhibition taught me to do it correctly, and since then I've never looked back. Please, if you read this get in touch - I'd love to hear from you! In 1987 I saw an article in the magazine Popular Crafts about the Ring of Tatters and have been a member ever since, regularly producing new patterns for the magazine. I won first prize in 1999 for a beaded bag at the Surrey Tatters Tatting Day, and again at this event in 2001; the patterns are provided for the prizewinning pieces. I passed my Lace Guild Assessments at Elementary and Intermediate Level in the Year 2000 - an appropriate way to celebrate this auspicious year - and have since then continued to tat and design many more pieces, the patterns of which have yet to be written up. I was appointed the Tatting Host at Bella Online in February 2002 and have developed a new site with a huge collection of links and articles there. In July 2002 I again won first prize at the Surrey Tatters Garden Party, this time for two Christmas decorations. |
