Jeannine Welles as Olivia and Kimberly Karen Johnson as Viola in Twelfth Night Press Release but Olivia loves Cesario. Only, Cesario is really Viola, and Viola loves Orsino. Twelfth Night; or What You WillAugust 28, 1998, 8 P.M. — marks the opening of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, at The Hudson Guild Theatre in Hollywood. Romantic, and witty, Twelfth Night is Shakespeare’s most popular play and one of his greatest comedies. Produced by Circus Theatricals, Hudson Guild Artistic Director Jack Stehlin directs. Original music by Daniel Nathan Spector. The Hudson Guild is entering its fourth year in residence at the Hudson Theatre. Written in 1601, Twelfth Night takes place in the fantastical land of Illyria. Twin brother and sister go down in a shipwreck. Believing her brother is dead, the sister, Viola, disguised as a man, becomes the confidante of Orsino, the duke of Illyria. Orsino sends Viola (now Cesario) to woo Olivia, (who, also grieving a dead brother), has vowed never to marry. Olivia then falls in love with Viola/Cesario, who has herself fallen in love with Orsino. Adding to the comedic confusion is Feste the Clown, the drunken Sir Toby Belch, the foolish Aquecheek, the conniving Malvolio, and Sebastian, Viola’s presumed drowned brother. “Twelfth Night embodies a carnavalesque spirit of abandon,” says director Jack Stehlin. “Love at first sight, masquerades, drinking, live music, and dueling. This is perfect summer fare!” Circus Theatricals presents The Hudson Guild in Twelfth Night, the premiere of the first annual Summer Shakespeare on the Hudson.
