Netscape server bundles targets intranets, advanced network enterprises
On Monday, Netscape Communications Corp. will announce some additions and a repackaging of its servers into two distinct bundles in order to expand its reach into enterprise markets.
"Our original 'choose five out of our nine servers' bundle was confusing for some customers," said Raj Gossain, senior product manager at Netscape, so the company split the offering into two bundles: The SuiteSpot 3.1 Standard Edition and the SuiteSpot Professional Edition.
"Netscape has changed its strategic perspective," said Tim Sloane, an analyst at Aberdeen Group, Inc. in Boston. "Instead of SuiteSpot representing just a discounted bundle of servers, it's now a tightly integrated set of servers that give users a Netscape platform for development and messaging."
The SuiteSpot Standard Edition is designed for small to large enterprises that want to set up an intranet. It integrates Netscape's Directory Server with its Enterprise Server, Messaging Server, Collabra Server and new Calendar Server. It will cost $3,495 for a 50-user license.
The Professional Edition will include all of the servers in the Standard Edition, plus the Mission Control tools and the Compass Server. It was designed for advanced network enterprises that want to expand to extranet applications. It will cost $4,750 for a 50-user license.
