Social/Human Services

The MathWorks actively supports the following organizations:

The New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans
US Veterans of all ages benefit from the services offered at the shelter: IE: help with resumes; job training; etc. Offer beds for those who are homeless. (many of the recipients are disabled) It supports local people. It fits in with our social mission in that we all must take responsibility for the treatment of those who have who have sacrificed on the behalf of others.

Habitat for Humanity International
HFHI helps provide affordable housing to homeless people who would otherwise not be able to afford it. Unique "no-interest loan" and "sweat-equity" systems which give participants responsibility and real ownership of the project (not just a hand out). Involves volunteers from all walks of life in giving to those in need (in time; money & labour). Operates both locally and globally (Boston; 50 US States; 60 countries worldwide). Supports our social mission in the general sense of helping people who are unable to help themselves.

YES - Youth Enrichment Services
YES a non-profit organization, is geared towards 7-17 year old inner city children who come from low income, broken families. They are strictly a Boston organization but are looking to branch out to other cities. Scottish Rite Learning Center for Children
Masonic Learning Center for Children

The Learning Center was established in 1993 as a Masonic Philanthropy providing one-on-one remedial therapy in reading; writing; and spelling for children with language based learning disabilities. These services are provided entirely free of charge. Their mission is to teach children in a manner that best suits their learning needs; assist them in building self-esteem and personal self-confidence. They also endeavor to make the public more aware of the challenges experienced by these children; and to increase awareness of the availability of treatment. The Greater Boston 32 degree Masonic Learning Center for Children is part of a larger network of 32 degree Masonic Children's Learning Centers throughout the northern eastern third of the United States.

LVA Literacy Unlimited
Literacy Unlimited trains tutors evaluates potential students, matches students with tutors, and monitors results of matches. Students are adults who live in the greater Metro West area who have reading/writing needs or who are non-native English speakers. They learn reading and writing skills in order to pay their own bills, read directions, apply for jobs, get their GEDs, get driver's licenses, become US citizens, help their own kids with homework, go to college, etc. Almost all of us are probably "illiterate" when it comes to understanding how widespread the problem is, the causes, and how much people can do when equipped with good literacy training. Hundreds of miracles happen each year thanks to literacy tutoring. These miracles benefit the community we work in. Literacy Unlimited staff said they are so very appreciative of the money we donate to them. This is especially true for two reasons. First, the money isn't earmarked as much of their grant funding is. Second, we are the only software company to make a major contribution. We should hope our lead might set an example. In 1999, using our donation and other funding they trained about 130 tutors. In total, there are over 250 student-tutor pairs supported by the office.
